The Silverado had been a good choice for years and the redesigned 2014 model was an even better performer than previous models. Handling is more carlike and the cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's. An assist system makes the tailgate easy to lift and prevents it from dropping open, easing cargo-handling duties. At 16 mpg overall with the 5.3-liter V8, our four-wheel-drive Crew Cab model got impressive fuel economy.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"The screen image on the dash was very POOR."

Grover R., CO (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"camera works and alarm work but not other features"

Anonymous, MT (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Camera out of focus. Service rear camera light appears when starting truck"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
CD player

"it would jam and not release the CD . took it to dealership, they were able to remove CD & told me it was a common problem, wanted a fortune to replace it. Bought a new one non OEM but have problems with inter face on rear camera and steering wheel controls. Was told its made to not interface with non OEM"

Dale D., AR (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Display screen freezes up

"Works intermittently"

Anonymous, AL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"My info system on the dash and drivers screen will not stay on the set screen. It changes continually and is a terrible distraction. Mostly it wants to display the radio on the drivers info screen. Sometimes it goes to navigation and shows" no destination given". Usually within a few miles of driving, it has changed 2 or three times. It is a terrible distraction and dangerous. I have gotten accustomed to the trip screen that shows speed, trip miles, and mileage. I do know how to read the gauges!! But when the radio screen comes on nothing else on the drivers screen shows. I can stop and change everything back...but within a few miles or minutes it has changed again, and again, and again. It never goes back to the driver info screen unless I stop and change it back. The dealer said it should have an error code in the software....but they are not seeing any error. They are not finding a problem....so...they are blaming it on the driver....that would be me!! They won't drive it 3 or 4 miles to see what it is doing. So frustrating.!!"

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"About 4 years after purchase, the radio screen locked up. This continued for about 8 months and self corrected."

Anonymous, KY (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"After a phone call hang's up the whole system freezes up and nothing works. I have reported it to the dealer and they told me to make an appointment to bring it in and have it checked out. Well after the vehicle is turned off for 15 to 20 minutes it re-sets and starts working again. Well whats the point of taking it in if they won't look at it at the time I have the problem because, they are just going to say we couldn't duplicate the problem when we checked it out. This has happened 3 time now"

Frederick W., FL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Display screen randomly freezes displaying a message saying, in effect, "It is dangerous to read this screen while you are driving" The only way to clear the screen is to 1) take your eyes off the road, 2) read the message, 3) locate the screen area where you are directed to clear the message, and 4) reach over and touch the screen to clear the message. So all this before anything else can be done with MyLink, and while your attention is taken off the road. MORE DISTRACTING THAN TEXTING!!!!"

Michael F., WA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)

"Could not change radio station, adjust volume, or switch inputs"

Anonymous, LA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Screen displays a warning message to not take your eyes off the road while driving, then freezes up until you take your eyes off the road and clear the screen. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD AS THERE IS NO WAY TO AVOID TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD. Washington just passed a law prohibiting a drive from holding a phone while driving. This screen behavior falls into the same class of problems distracting drivers from their duty to watch the road. I have written to the state attorney general asking him to investigate and fine GMC for this driving hazard."

Michael F., WA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)
Display screen goes blank

"Display unit went black while driving. Dealer had to replace it. It was a one time issue and your previous question regarding it did not have an option for one time failure."

Anonymous, MA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 6.2-L V8)

"Display screen goes occasionally blank (resets) when on a call using bluetooth"

Chris L., SC (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"I disconnected/reconnected the cables from the radio module behind the glove compartment to fix the issue."

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"I'm constantly having trouble with the MyLink system being unable to read my USB device. Its like it was made with the cheapest 1980's computer components and unable to handle decent sized USB's - for 2015 that's not acceptable for the price paid."

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"I'm constantly having to reinstall the device several times while operating the vehicle to make it be recognized - it seems the software has a number of bugs that don't allow it to easily recognize and keep the connection to the device."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)

"Several issues related to on board system. 1. It stores data but doesn't appear to have an overt means for me to delete and ensure there's no hidden information for a new owner to access. 2. The entertainment system seems built for the year 2000. It was antiquated rolling off the assembly line. Its better than what most vehicles had - but overpriced for what it does."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)
Hardware replacement

"This was explained in previous comments. Display screen went blank while driving. Dealer replaced it."

Anonymous, MA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 6.2-L V8)

"Intermittent problems with displays, pairing, and touch screen that are extremely annoying and have not yet been resolved."

Anonymous, AL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The main display unit which includes the radio has had to be replaced twice. The first time was after a routine software/firmware update made it inoperable. This has been replaced again in the past 12 months having issues with the radio/voice commands"

Anonymous, LA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Died"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"Very bad backup camera video quality. Gps is not as good as a 125.00 magellan"

Ann M., KY (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"The main communications module in the Radio/In dash Navigation went out. The vehicle was still in warranty. The entire module had to be replaced."

Anonymous, MS (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Bluetooth fails to recognize previously registered devices"

Anonymous, TX (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"Every once in a while the Bluetooth will not connect to the truck. It will do that for several days and then reconnect after several attempts."

Gary Q., CA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Radio

"Display system and radio/HVAC did not initiate twice on start up, I disconeccted battery pawer and system restarted. It went off one while driving in conjuction with instrumentation. I stopped and power cycled key, instruments and radio/displaysystem resterted. This problem was explained at the dealer, I was told there was a PCM? update coming, To my knowledge a update was never installed, thou I have not had the problem recently"

Chuck F., FL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"Radio sound intermittantly doesn’t come on when engine starts. Turning off ignition and turning it back on starts radio playing."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)
Software update fixes

"Several Recalls made because of software issues, turning causing the truck to stall and others that made the vehicle potentially dangerous to drive."

Anonymous, SC (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)
Voice control commands

"Does not recognize speech well at all. I have given up using this feature"

Karen S., LA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"System went haywire - did not respond to buttons, screen contact or voice control - could not use any feature of the system. Required replacement of system to fix"

"12 months after purchase, compressor failed. Replaced under warranty."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The A/C Compressor failure did not register on the OBD. This led to additional expenses to top up refrigerant to have it leak in a few days. The mechanic mentioned this is a common failure of this make / model."

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"not much to tell - AC stopped working, went to dealership they said it was the compressor . $1300 bucks and a day latter I had working AC again"

Dale D., AR (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Ken H., AL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"As previously stated, the system seems to disregard the temperature set. Will allow air flow from vents that should be closed"

Anonymous, OR (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Does not properly cool on hot sunny days"

Anonymous, PA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)
Condenser

"The condenser developed a hole in it which leaked out all the coolant. I had it worked on by a mechanic who put colorant in the line and there was no leak shown in the line so he put coolant in it. I drove it two days before it started venting hot air again. The mechanic looked at it again and pulled the condenser. There he found a small leak, so he installed a new one and filled it with coolant again. It's working great now. Cold air is important in the South!!"

Ryan G., TX (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Condenser leak. replaced under warranty"

David S., OR (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Just as the truck approached 36,000 miles, and I had owned it for 3.5 years, the A/C stopped working. The dealer confirmed that the condenser needed to be replaced, but stated it was out of warranty, so I had to pay $1,200 to fix. I was very frustrated, especially when I read online and found I was not the only person with this issue on a similar GM Vehicle."

Benjamin P., FL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The transmission in this truck is an 8 speed automatic that shifts very hard and makes a popping noise from time to time and the CHEVROLET dealer said that he can't fix that problem because all 2015 CHEVROLET 1500 8 speed do this. I looked on the internet and find that he is correct. Other owners have the same problem!"

Jerry L., MS (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"8 speed transmission. Rough shifting at times. Dealer corrected using a GM TSB."

Anonymous, IL (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)
Transmission computer

"This truck has had transmission problems from the first day!! It is suppose to shift from 8 cylinder to 4 cylinder to save fuel. What it does is stops and crunches and they bumps into the next gear. CHEVROLET is aware of the problem and says they are working on a fix,but as of right now they are not doing anything to fix it!!! I have taken it in to the dealer and left it several times and the problem has not been fixed, There have been several software updates that have not helps. I know several people that have traded this vehicle before the warranty expired because of this problem. Unfortunately, I can't afford to trade....so I guess I am stuck with it."

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Rear window water leak"

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Satellite Antenna had a service ticket, but wasn't warranted ( and wasn't a safety recall)since my truck was past the 3 year warrantee. The antenna leaked while I was on a long trip causing mildew and mold smell. I had to pay to have a new headliner, new antenna (new antenna corrected the defect of the antenna that came from factory), and my carpet removed, cleaned and reinstalled. I feel like it was a problem with Chevrolet and they should have paid for everything, but they only paid a small part (about 1/3 of the cost). I pleaded with my salesman and the service manager. They tried to get more from Chevrolet, but Chevrolet wouldn't cooperate. The smell lingered until after I had it detailed twice, lasting a year."

Anonymous, IN (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"This truck since day one has had rattles, crackling sounds, and popping sounds that should not have been there, and from what I have read in magazines and on line I am not the only one out here with these same troubles. The GM CHEVROLET brand trucks do look good and drive smooth but I just could not get any justice through my dealership and I honestly could not trade it back in because I would not have been able to sleep knowing that I had I passed the problems onto someone else! When I realized that my warranty was worthless, I decided to fix things out of my own pocket including the decision to change the suspension by installing a lift kit with bigger tires ( GM / Rough Country premium lift kit ). After 3 years of personal torture, the nerve racking noises stopped. Having these changes does make me a whole lot happier with the truck - a lot happier...."

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"Torque converter shutter. Took two years and six trips to dealer for resolution. Problem occurred daily. Transmission still shifts rough. 6.2 V8 is best engine I've ever owned."

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"This was connected to the transmission issue I just described."

Anonymous, SC (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"When going up an incline, the truck would make a shuttering feeling like it was going over small speed bumps and I carried it to the dealer and they replaced the torque converter under warranty and that fixed that problem."

Jerry L., MS (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"The truck would shudder under load like climbing a hill or acceleration from speed. I would also experience rough shifting and a vibration in the steering wheel. I kept complaining to the dealer I purchased the truck from but they could not correct the problem. I finally found out that they did not have a transmission tech so I took it to another dealer whose transmission tech immediately diagnosed the problem as a bad tourque converter. That corrected all of the problems. I still experience hard shifts at very low speed but this seems to be common with the 8-speed transmission programming."

Tom C., CO (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"Vibration, shifting hard and bouncing rpm. Dealership replacement."

Transmission rebuild or replacement

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"I was experiencing a shudder in the transmission as it was cycling between 4 cylinder and 8 cylinder modes. It was becoming very noticeable and affecting the drive-ability of the truck. When I took it to the dealer, a mechanic drove it and immediately said that the transmission and torque converter needed to be replaced. This was completely covered under the drive-train warranty. It took about 3 days to obtain and replace the parts. The dealer gave me a no-cost loaner vehicle. Since the replacement, I have had no problems."

Anonymous, SC (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"The 8 speed is well known for significant issues. Mine exploded, sent debris through the transmission and instead of replacing it with a rebuilt transmission GM had the 'transmission guy' rebuild it. It now shifts horribly, slips, bangs and anything else you can think of but GM refuses to do anything. GM does not stand behind their product; this is a known issue."

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"Truck needed a complete transmission rebuild with under 100000 miles. Dealer did not spot any transmission problems within their shop 3 days prior. Ergo, I had the rebuild done via a reputable independent transmission specialist/shop. I upgraded some of the OEM parts, too (which were of better materials [i.e., stainless steel vs. plastic] while the transmission was completely opened."

John B., (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)

"When i purchased the vehicle used with over 100k miles i'm glad i got the extended warranty as the torque converter on the truck was chattering when going up hills. Upon inspection the chevy dealer replaced the transmission with a OEM one."

Ryan G., TX (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Approximately two years ago we noticed the paint on the passenger door next to the widow bubbling. It then started to peel off. Took it to the dealer where the tech said this is a known problem, his CHEVROLET trucks have done this. Unfortunately our extended warranty had just run out and CHEVROLET wouldn't do anything about it. We have not had it repaired yet but plan on taking it to the body shop we use to have it repaired."

Anonymous, ON (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"Paint chipped off the back of the vehicle within a month of purchasing the vehicle. I brought it to the dealer and they refused claiming that it was likely due to lawn mower damage (I'm not sure how they arrived at this as it was non-sensical given the damage is 3.5 feet off the ground on the back of the truck)."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"There was a recall"

Anonymous, NY (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Brake felt soft when trying to stop at stop sign. A few days later, we received a letter from GM that said there was a problem with braking systems for that model year & to make an appointment with the service department at the dealer. So we did and it was repaired."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Master cylinder

"Oil got into the brake booster causing a very hard brake pedal and so they had to replace the master cylinder and brake booster. Was a problem that GM was aware of (they had a service bulletin out on it) but they would not accept responsibility or help defray any of the cost."

Luke C., WA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Premature brake wear

"The brakes recently required replacement. It seems too soon to replace the brake pads"

Anonymous, ON (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"After about 135k miles, on occasion, pressing the brake pedal at speeds below 5 mph would result in brake vibration and pulsing. Pedal would go almost to the floor and truck would continue to roll forward. Pedal would return to its normal pre braking position and truck would immediately come to a stop. Problem did not repeat itself for several thousand miles. There was a vehicle recall about this issue. Problem turned out to be a defective vacuum pump."

Anonymous, (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Regular brake failure

"It was in for the brake sys recall software update. After update on way home I lost braking while towing travel trailer. Back to dealer. They found vacuum pump for brake system bad. No parts due to strike. Had loaner for almost 4 weeks. Good thing I was not towing on a trip and was just still in town when they failed. The pump was part of the recall and covered."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"As already documented to the NHTSA, low-speed backing can result in brakes feeling very hard due to inadequate power brake boost. This usually happens, if it's going to, backing with a trailer."

Anonymous, VA (2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Rotors

"It actually happened quite suddenly. The brakes started squealing, grinding, and catching. A couple of days later, I took it to the dealer for a recall on another issue, so had them check out the brake issues too. The dealer first said all 4 rotors needed replacing. Then came back and said all 4 drums were rusted and also needed replacing. ??? I'd only had the truck a little over a year, and had not driven in conditions that would rust the drums. The rotors could be normal wear and tear, but rusted drums? I don't think so. Supposedly this truck had been a 1-owner company truck, and not driven off-road. Dealer said they did a 170-point inspection. However, my mechanic said this truck had DEFINITELY been driven off road extensively, and I trust my mechanic more than the dealer. Also, supposedly, this truck had not been in an accident, but my mechanic found evidence to the contrary. When I mentioned it to the dealer, he swore the truck had not been in an accident, and they did the 170-point inspection. But when I pointed the damage out to him, he couldn't deny it, as it was quite obvious, and the dealer had to fix it. So just a year later, when the dealer tells me my brake drums are rusted, well...goes back to the fact that it was driven off road in spite of what the dealer may have thought. The cost to replace the rotors AND drums was 3 times the cost of just replacing the rotors. At the time, I could only afford to get one set done, and the dealer said the front were the worst, so I had those replaced (rotors and drums). Two weeks ago, I took the truck to my mechanic for an oil change, and asked them to check the back brakes, letting them know what the dealer said. My mechanic said my back brakes have 30-40% more life in them, and that is 4 months after I was at the dealer."

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
What should you do:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782.
