The Silverado, and its twin the GMC Sierra, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Gear selector or linkage

"I traded the truck in after 30 days on a Toyota Tundra. Chevrolet wasn't supporting their dealers and didn't have an answer as to why 10% of the transmissions (8 speeds) are so problematic. I lost $5000 on the trade but kept my sanity"

Dennis K., MN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)
Rough shifting

"hard down shift, when slowing fast"

Vernon P., TN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"truck went into reduced engine power mode after shifting roughly. Took to dealer to be reset."

Anonymous, ON (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The transmission hesitates between gears when shifting on takeoff then shifts hard when it does shift through about the first four gears. It also often vibrates at higher speeds an feels like you're on rumble strips!"

Anonymous, MO (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"Both problems are related as I have had 3 updates done to correct poor shifting while driving. Most notable was poor down shifts. Very clunky. The latest software updates have definitely helped but I would certainly not describe the shifting as silky smooth. Given all the technology available today I find this as very poor performance."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Sometimes when I shift into drive from park, it will shift into it hard making a clunking noise and sometimes depending on the speed I am traveling, it will shift rough."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Truck had a rough shift from 2 to 3 gear. Both up an down"

Anonymous, AB (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"When you accelerate, RPMs almost max out before shifting into next gear."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS Unsure)

"Sometimes going down a hill it will shift into second gear. I have to shift to low and shift the gears manually to prevent this from happening."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"It doesn't seem like it knows what gear to be in."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Same. Problem is with all"

Freeman B., SC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Acceleration has a 'dead spot'. It is difficult to maintain a constant speed because the truck 'can't seem to decide' which gear to be in"

John A., CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission is uneven at low speeds and light acceleration. it feels like the engine is missing, but it is the transmission."

Timothy P., TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Seems to hesitate when in partial throttle mode. Also when it shifts from V8 to V4 mode, it is not very smooth."

Michael K., DE (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Under torque it hesitated."

Gregory F., PA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, AL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The truck jerks when accelerating from a stop"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The tans started slipping and making noise, I took it in and it had sliping gears, torque converter issuesm wouldnt hold pressure, resulted in a total transmission rebuild at 54000, also had to rebuild the transfer case due to issues in that"

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Transmission computer

"First time down a steep hill the auto braking engaged. There was a smoke smell and it has not worked since."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 5.3-L V8)

"My transmission shifts poorly especially when downshifting. It seems the computer does not know what to do or how to do it smoothly. I have had 3 software updates that have helped but still not completely fixed in my opinion. I still get some smaller clunks when the vehicle is downshifting to a stop."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"6 speed transmission. Skips and hesitates while driving. GM states that it's operating normally for fuel efficiency. A 6.2 engine with 8 speed trans does not"

Freeman B., SC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission clunks when it shifts"

Sharon G., NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"see previous answer"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"Ever since the truck was new the roof leaks when it is parked in heavy rain. There have been 7 dealer visits attempting to get this corrected. The following have been tried: tighten high speed antennae, replace high speed antennae (twice), blow out sun roof drain tubes, reseal roof panel, replace roof panel trim. The last repair was during the winter so I'll have to wait for a hard rain to test if it is repaired. The headliner is stained from the leaks. VERY frustrating."

Blair M., SK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"CHEVROLET's best Tonneau cover leaks water around the seams of each panel. Seals along the sides also were leaking. Thus you cannot store or carry anything that may be damaged by water. When pressing the dealer, CHEVROLET knew of this issue."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"The cargo area has a 'water resistant' seal with 3 section lock in cover. The cover sections (particular to the high country/ high desert model) leaked and were replaced under warranty as they filled with water. The same thing happend to the 3 replacement sections and there were again replaced. They still leak"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"With 20000 miles on truck i noticed a popping noise from the back end like something was rolling around in the bed of the truck. I took the truck to the dealer the advisor says it’s the leaf springs on the back. When i picked up the truck they said the unbolted and lubricated the springs then put it back together. Noise is gone! Am i going have to do this every 20,000 miles?"

David B., OK (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, ON (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Radio

"Sometimes the radio will start scrolling through the functions and can not be stopped without turning off the ignition and restarting. Also sometimes the radio will stop and a voice tells me that when it's safe, to pull over and ask Google a question and it just keeps repeating. Also , at night, the back up camera screen is blindingly bright., so bright that you can't see a clear picture."

Jerry M., FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"When making low speed turns losses' all power and leaves you stranded in the middle of an intersection. Starts right back up but have nearly been in a couple of dozen wrecks. Chevrolet dealership has been unable to correct this problem and has costed me several hundreds of dollars since it is out of warranty. They say it has something to do with the power steering since it's all electric. When you turn at low speeds it causes a voltage drop causing all electronics to cut off. Very dangerous. Recalls on 2014, 2015, and 2016's but not 2017's, least not yet."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"was a bad ground in the top left of the dashboard"

Anonymous, DE (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Reverse back-up lights stuck on when there was rain obviously affecting the eleectrical system. Lights stayed on even when truck was shut off, Had to place duct tape over back up light to drive to dealer for fix. Main computer panel malfunctioned"

Stephen W., IN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)
Gauges

"All lights on the dash go dark there is no light visible on instrument cluster or entertainment/navigation screen. Dealer has checked twice and says no problem can be found, will keep documenting and taking in for dealer to evaluate"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Headlights

"The day/night sensor turned the headlights on full and dimmed the interior lights during the day when their was bright sun. This happens at various times and may last for various time lengths."

R H., FL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Daytime running light (right side) had water in it. Stopped working. Dealer replaced head light assembly."

Nicholas F., CT (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)
Interior lights

"Frequent events of entire dash lighting blacking out, dealer said I need to increase the dimmer switch. I believe it is a fault in the light sensing system which GM fails to acknowledge. Driving down the road and boom entire dash and infotainment system are black, it was very scary the first few times because you feel the vehicle has lost all power until you realize it is jus the lights. Should not have to adjust dimmer to see instrument clusters"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Wiper motor or washer

"Stopped working, but reset after 15 min. This happensed durinh a rain storm"

"Torque converter failed. Had to be replaced as previously discussed."

James B., NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Dealer tried to tune up the torque converter. Didn't work. Replaced torque converter, then retuned it still the same!??"

Anonymous, MO (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"Replaced still not fixed"

Anonymous, AL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"When you first start the vehicle after sitting for a few hours, it will hesitate or shudder at lower speeds. After you have driven it and warmed it up after about 10 minutes or so, the hesitation and shudder go away. It has been like this since brand new and I now only have 6700 miles on it. The dealer tells me it has something to do with the motor reducing to 3 cylinders instead of 6 at lower speeds. If that was true, it should do it all the time and not just when it is cold! I don't think Chevrolet wants to acknowledge the problem."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 4.3-L V6)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Started experiencing shifting issues. Hard shift, late shift, noise and rumble strip feeling. Took truck to dealer for service. Dealer stated during road test, transmission overheated and truck went in to limp mode. Tech removed and tore down transmission and found metal chips. Also stated torque converter failed. Took two and one half weeks for repair. Had to wait for a torque converter from GM factory. Also had to replace a pressure valve. I understand this is a known problem on 2015-17 Silverado trucks."

James B., NC (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"trans mis shifted and slipped since initial delivery. GM required that it be drained which did not work, then rebuilt twice which did not work. Finally it was a total replacement."

Anonymous, (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 5.3-L V8)
Driveline vibration

"After 4 trips to dealer for vibrations with no resolve investigation led me to the known chevy shakes affecting some trucks, and the dealer bulletins issued in regards to different corrective actions. Also investigated the Goodyear Eagle LS-2 tires and found past problems with them. After suffering for 28,000 miles I chose to change out tires to Michelins and that solved the vibrations."

"I noticed the truck was out of alignment after driving 5 miles on the highway the day I bought the car. Brand new. Poor quality control."

James T., IA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Shocks or struts

"I heard a strange rattle every so often, usually when slow braking or going over a bump. Come to find out my front left strut was the cause. I didn't think it was a huge problem when driving cause it only showed up on seldom occasions. So I was very surprised when the dealership told me that the top part of the strut was cracked and I was very lucky itd hadn't done any damage to me while driving, let alone the strut completely breaking apart. So I'm lucky. What O thought was a minor issue was a major issue and the dealership was very honest with me. Everything was covered by the warranty."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"When taking the vehicle over a speed bump the rear makes a horrible twisting metal sound"

Ronald V., AL (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Steering wheel vibration

"Noticed the problem after taking the truck home. Had it in for service four times with no fix. I drive on the highway twice a week for 2 1/2 hours each way. The vibration is so consistent my hand feels like it is a sleep. It is a distraction while driving. I would not have purchased this truck if I knew this issue. I also feel I would have a hard time selling the truck with this issue. I am now in the process of trying to get the truck replace or my money back"

Anonymous, MN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"I can best describe it as CR previous rating on this truck. It has a jittery ride. Had into the dealer 4 times and they cannot correct it. Found where GM has issued bulletins on this problem but don't have a fix. Been driving CHEVROLET trucks for 30 years. I will never buy another after this."

Stephen W., IN (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"ABS sensor went bad on left rear brake. It was covered under warranty. Of course when they go bad you get the ABS light and the cruise control is disabled."

Kerry C., UT (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"Computer keeps telling me that the system is failing. I looked and tested a d have found no issues. Just got a recall note from CHEVROLET for this."

Jay L., MD (2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.3-L V6)

"Brake pedal looses pressure and goes all the way to the floor. Have to use full pressure on brakes to get it to stop. It has been in twice for this and the problem has recurred just recently. Each time I take it in, they claim its a software problem. They update the software but 3 months later, the problem reoccurs. I am now receiving a message stating "An issue with the StabiliTrak® stability control system in your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado has been detected. Please service your vehicle within 7 days" and another message today stating "An issue with the Antilock Braking System in your 2017 Chevrolet Silverado has been detected. A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
Summary:
General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Buick Lacrosse and Chevrolet Spark EV, Caprice PPV and SS vehicles, 2014-2017 Buick Encore and Chevrolet Corvette, Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, 2015-2016 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe, Trax, Suburban and Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles, and 2015-2017 GMC Sierra HD 2500 and 3500 vehicles. While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. What should you do:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge.
