The Silverado, and its twin the GMC Sierra, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's. An assist system makes the tailgate easy to lift and prevents it from dropping open, easing cargo-handling duties. And at 16 mpg overall with a 5.3-liter V8, our four-wheel-drive Crew Cab model got impressive fuel economy.

In addition, a relatively low ride height eases access, the dashboard controls are simple to use, and the Silverado provides impressive towing and payload capacities.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"I began having delays connecting to Android auto and dropped connection. Finally it quit working. I updated my phone and try other things with my phone until I realized it could be the truck system. The dealer tested it and determined it was a vehicle problem . They made an appointment and repaired it. It was the human interface module. I am very satisfied with the repair and the dealership."

David S., MN (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"New Ipod will not work for long before it freezes up. The ipod works perfect everywhere else and GM ignores the problem. They say it is the ipod"

Anonymous, AB (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"It was part of the same problem with Android. It was fixed at the same time."

David S., MN (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"It's unsafe to use for even the simplest. The directions for all infotainment features are too complicated and when you go to the book you get referred to another page and from that one to another, i.e., kind of like a dog chasing his tale!!! I hate the whole entire system---maybe Ford or Toyota will be a better choice for me next year."

Anonymous, TN (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The phone will pair with MyLink, but will not receive or transmit calls."

Anonymous, MN (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Dealer reluctance to take my vehicle in for service, and even after they decided I did have a problem, they returned it to me with a note that they could not find any problem. I just returned from a short vacation trip and am going back to the dealer. This is my last Chevrolet, period!Took 30 days"

Anonymous, GA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4.3-L V6)

"Abnormal rpm when shifting."

Anonymous, MT (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)

"hard shifts at times and jerky backing up at times"

Anonymous, MO (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Slipping transmission

"Jery backing up at times Generally first thing after truck has been sitting overnight"

Anonymous, MO (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"Leaking coolant after only 750 miles. Told by dealer Chevrolet has a serious problem with cylinder head failure. Took one week to get cylinder head part. 2 days more to get gasket part."

Michael F., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 6.2-L V8)

"A major cylinder head flaw in manufacturing caused coolant leaks. The dealership had 5 other trucks with the same cylinder head failure problem in for major repair while mine was in the shop. An entire upper engine rebuild was required. This manufacturing flaw is completely unacceptable in a $ 60,000 truck."

Michael F., CA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 6.2-L V8)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"after 740 miles of driving, the engine broke a valve lifter and required replacement."

Mark R., OH (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Fuel pump

"Warning light came on, I took to dealer, they found a faulty fuel pump, replaced under warranty"

Paul P., IL (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Very disturbing issue. At approx. 20,000 miles fuel would splash out of the filler neck when fuel pump clicked off. Fuel would splash out on the ground and on me if I was to close. Dealer said it was a canister and a solenoid problem and I would have to pay $524.00 because it was dusty and not covered by warranty. I drive mostly highway and only do 2/10ths of a mile on my driveway that has any dust. I argued them down to $324.00 because I was scared of a fire. I figured I would contact GM later. This did not stop the problem and they told me they would have to drop the fuel tank and if it was a dust problem it would cost me up to $1500.00. I was mad and went to a GMC dealer who replaced the fuel pump under warranty and said there was no dust problem. I opened a case with GM to get my money back and nothing has happened in over 3 months even though they call me every two or three weeks to say they are working on it. I would not ever buy a GM product again. I do not trust the vehicle and I do not trust them to back it up even while it is still under warranty. What about farmers and construction workers who are in dust all the time? I did not buy a Tundra because of the fuel economy. That was a mistake and I have since sold the CHEVROLET and bought a Tundra. The fuel economy is awful. But, I trust the truck and it has all the safety features that my high end CHEVROLET did not. A very expensive lesson I have learned."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Vehicle check engine light would come on and the truck would slow way down. I stopped ,turned engine off and restarted two times before it would drive. Check engine light stayed on 40 more miles. Took to dealer and their scan showed nothing wrong. Also check engine light would come on and cruise control would not work for 45 miles. Then light would go off and dealer scan showed nothing."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

Air or water leaks

"The built in antenna on roof was leaking"

Anonymous, WA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"Engine would not start. But after a few tries it started. Took it to dealer. Codes were inconclusive. GM Tech told dealer to replace the fuse panel located in the engine compartment. I have had no problems with that since then."

Woodrow G., IA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Spark plugs or wires failure

"It was a coil issue which put the engine light flashing. Once diagnosed it has been running great. They figured out which coil was affected."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Down time approximately 3 weeks waiting for rebuild on transmission due to personnel shortage! Vehicle provided by dealer for personal use."

Anonymous, MT (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)

"Dealer could not find problem, and denied problem existed. Repeated efforts to get repaired and finally corporate had them replace the transmission. Still had problems infrequently with rough shifting and failure to engage in gear, but would not replace vehicle. Will trade 2020!"

Anonymous, GA (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4.3-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Warning lights

"My OnStar light continually changes color. When I take it in to be fixed, it isn't red, it's green indicating proper functioning. The next day it is red again. It's like the dealer doesn't believe me. In addition to this problem, the trim on the windows makes a lot of noise when I drive. There's sagging in the headliner (from an imroperly installed sunroof - the truck was leased new with a sunroof). There's missing pieces to the bed cover, that have been missing since the car was delivered. I've had so many problems that two months into my lease, the dealer had my truck more days than me. The dealer (College Chevrolet, Albion, MI) will no longer return my calls and hasn't fixed multiple issues. Meanwhile, we purchased the Audi Q5 a few weeks later - the car runs like a dream. We haven't had a single issue. The service is amazing. We go in, they give us a loaner, they change the oil, do updates, handle recalls. We go eat lunch and pick the car back up a few hours later. When we pick it up it's been vacuumed and washed. For very similarly priced vehicles (both about $50k), the Audi is amazing. When the lease is up on the Silverado we are done with Chevrolet!! There is a night and day difference between Audi and Chevrolet."

Rachel H., MI (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"Does not work as well as Ford. Air not directed equally, either too McGee in one area or not enough in another. Told if not happy put it on manual and contro"

Anonymous, MB (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

"Poor quality paint, chipping since new"

Anonymous, MB (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Sunroof

"Headliner sags from improper manufacturer sunroof installation. Dealer attempted to correct this once. The headliner still sags. Unable to get dealer to correct this situation."

Rachel H., MI (2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.2-L V8)
