This Texas-size wagon becomes your home-on-wheels on a long cross country trip. Ride, handling and braking are much improved over its truck-like predecessor. The Suburban seats eight comfortably with room for their luggage. Parking is still awkward and fuel economy is not great.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2004 Chevrolet Suburban owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"Door ajar switch failed which triggers alarm and interior lights. Minor switch but assembly is costly to replace and requires door disassembly. > $800 to fix."

Brent W., WA (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Cruise control

"Stopped working, when problem was fixed it was the high mounted stop light that shorted out and it had a common ground with the cruise control that caused it to stop working."

Michael D., CA (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Replaced the bulbs for the 2 front running lights"

Anonymous, WI (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"Third (upper) brake light stopped working"

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LS 5.3-L V8)

"Another problem with this series - the daytime running lights leak and cause the bulb to fail repeatedly."

Anonymous, FL (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Gauges

"Speedometer, RPM's, Oil Pressure, Fuel Level gauges all had sporadic periods of false readings. Sometimes they worked properly and other times they were either not functioning or readings were not believable."

W D., LA (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"My speedometer does not work properly It does not tell the correct speed I am going. The other main problem is the heating cooling I only get air blowing out of the defogger in the front of the car"

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Chevrolet Suburban 5.3-L V8)

"Entire instrument panel went dead while driving on highway. No gauges, no speedometer, no instrument lights, not anything. Even more dangerous because it happened at night. Panel was replaced once during warranty because gauges were working improperly but not completely dead like this time."

Tom P., NC (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LS 5.3-L V8)

"gas gauge does not work now. previously the speedometer and the temp gauges did not work--the have been fixed"

Interior lights

"Some Instrument panel lights have failed"

Anonymous, OR (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LS 5.3-L V8)
Keyless entry

W D., LA (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Tire pressure monitor

"Was not working for a prolonged period of time. I hate this feature on all vehicles; they are an aggravation. If they would tell me which tire was low (I understand some manufacturers do) it might be useful. I do a walk-around weekly and visually check to see if any tires appear to be significantly low. I finally had two monitors replaced this year."

Tom P., NC (2004 Chevrolet Suburban LS 5.3-L V8)

There is also some rusting on the right-side rear area that my body shop professional tells me is a systemic problem with Suburbans as the rear air conditioning system has an internal (inside the body side panel) drain hose that causes all Suburban to rust here. This appears to be a manufacturing defect."

SEAT BELTS:REAR
Apr 22 2005
A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
Summary:
ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.

IF A SEPARATION OCCURRED AND THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPEN, FRAGMENTS FROM THE ACCUMULATOR COULD CAUSE INJURY TO PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. THE PRESENCE OF THIS CRACK OR FRACTURED SURFACE COULD ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE ACCUMULATOR CIRCUIT OF THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. THE LOSS OF FLUID WOULD CAUSE INCREASED STEERING AND BRAKING EFFORT AND A CRASH MAY OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Summary:
CERTAIN TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND VANS EQUIPPED WITH BOSCH HYDRO-BOOST BRAKE ASSEMBLIES, THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER PRESSURE ACCUMULATOR MAY CRACK AND SEPARATE FROM THE HYDRO-BOOST ASSEMBLY DURING NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS.
What should you do:

CONSEQUENTLY, THE VALVE O-RING SEAL MAY FRACTURE. STEERING EFFORTS MAY BE SLIGHTLY INCREASED WHILE BRAKING OR PARKING. UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, A FRACTURED SEAL MAY REQUIRE A SLIGHT INCREASE IN THE APPLIED BRAKE PEDAL EFFORT TO ACHIEVE THE SAME VEHICLE DECELERATION RATE AS PRIOR TO THE SEAT FRACTURE.
Summary:
CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, PICKUP TRUCKS, AND PASSENGER VANS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 135, ?PASSENGER CAR BRAKE SYSTEMS.? SOME OF THESE VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH AN OUT-OF-SPECIFICATION BRAKE HYDRO-BOOST HOUSING RELIEF VALVE BORE.
