The huge Suburban might not be politically correct, but it has been the vehicle of choice for families who won't fit in a minivan or another SUV, or for those who need heavy-duty towing or offroading capabilities. It can seat nine (though more commonly seven or eight) with plenty of room for luggage. A comfortable ride, quiet interior, and a well-mannered V8 engine are among the key attributes.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Chevrolet Suburban owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"worn out needed replaced"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

"Just normal wear due to mileage."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Electronic or air suspension

"Compressor pump failure. Second unit to fail in about 3 years."

Peter W., PA (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Shocks or struts

"Left rear shock needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, IA (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Tie rods

"replaced due to milage"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"The drivers' and rear passenger doors take on water after heaving rain. I open each door and remove a drain in the bottom of each, to drain water out profusely. Maybe a gallon of water in each door !"

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"I think this is part of the previous door water issue."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Wind noise

"leak around passanger front door"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LTZ 6.0-L V8)

"wind noise at higher speeds"

Thomas S., WI (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"Bottom part of door where the weather trim is is stained from a metal piece on the trim rusting"

Andy J., IL (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Locks and latches

"The problem I've had with this Suburban was the outside door handles that open and close the doors. I had one completely break off, and the others are very fragile. I have a 2002 CHEVROLET Suburban with it's original door handles. I've replaced these handles twice on my 2014 Suburban, and they're still not always opening. If you should try to pull the door handle when it's locked, accidentally, then the handle won't open the door. My wife has had to crawl through the window or through the back door and crawl over the Console to get into the passenger front seat. Eventually they'll start working again. But to me, they're very fragile and really of a crappy design. Of all the things on this very expensive vehicle, this is the most frustrating part of this vehicle."

Anonymous, (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Tailgate, hatch or trunk

"Both struts needed to be replaced on rear hatch. They would not keep the hatch open, and it would slowly close on you."

Thomas B., CO (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"at random, the display freezes and then goes back to normal"

Tb N., NC (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"maps outdated from the very first day I picked up the vehicle from dealer. Didn't recognize streets 3 years old in Birmingham, Al. Keeps giving erroneous data on trips, GM solution is to say "They are aware of problem and working on it 15 months late"

Jack C., FL (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"paint on most-used radio and HVAC controls peeling off"

Tb N., NC (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)
Rust

"weather stripping rusting staining bottom of four doors. Was told it is not covered under warranty"

Andy J., IL (2014 Chevrolet Suburban LT 5.3-L V8)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine knock or ping

"bought from dealer used, one owner-after a couple of week my husband goes to change the oil and it barley registered on the dip stick and what did register was black as coal. We should have checked the oil ourselves before we left the dealer but we thought the dealer would have done that before it leaving the dealership. So my husband changed the oil with full synthetic oil. The the clattering began. Off and on faint or loud. Took it into the dealer, he could not reproduce the clatter. Brought it home. Days later error code pops up P0304 I believe pointing the the AFM system 4 to 8 cylinder system. Now making very loud clattering. Took it in said needed all new lifters and cam, that they were pitted. I had done research on this and GM has trouble the their AFM systems. that most shops replace the engine and some shops just change the lifters and cam. We stated the if the lifters and cam were pitted that that pitted debris has got into the oil stream and contaminated the mains and inserts. They said there policy was to change just the cam an lifters. We are not happy. We are concerned that this engine will not last us as long as an engine that did nit have this problem. It is back at the dealers now. We're hoping we can get a new engine or an extended warranty on this engine or just buy it back. I love Suburbans. I love this Suburban but I'm afraid of the engine and being stranded somewhere because the engine has broken down."

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"rear window defogger"
