Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. Safety features added with this model include standard stability control and curtain airbags. The ride has also been improved. Inside, the cabin is better finished and the rear windows now roll down. A new option package includes rear seats that swivel to face the third row. But braking and handling performance have dropped, and acceleration and fuel economy are unimpressive. A blind spot detection system is available and is a great find if you run across it.

Evaporator

"Rear cabin evaporator is located in passenger side rear wheel well and is built of dissimilar metals creating galvanic corrosion and is also exposed to salt. Rusted through leading to $1,800 CDN repair at dealer for A/C system. The vehicle is rust proofed and body is pretty much flawless but other components don't always fare well. Dealer said it is a common problem and it sounds like a simple enough situation to fix with better design. Only major problem the vehicle has had in the last 5 years."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Chrysler Town & Country Limited 4.0-L V6)

"Rear evaporator stopped working. Quoted over $1,200 to replace evaporator and rear A/C lines. Declined and opted to "plug" the rear A/C lines to have only A/C in front. However, the A/C has now completed stopped working. Taking it to the shop Tuesday. Summer's coming!"

Judging from the internet, this seems to be a common problem around 50K miles."

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"The TIPM system, which is the brains of the vehicle has malfunctioned while the car is in motion. While traveling on a highway at 40mph, the TIPM went haywire and the vehicle came to a dead stop - as in from 40mph to 0mph INSTANTLY. Luckily, no one was hurt."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Chrysler Town & Country Touring 4.0-L V6)

"The engine computer, during a cross country drive, decided to rev the engine, burying the tac on full speed and wouldn't disengage, double feet on the brakes was the only thing that kept us from speeding out of control, had to shift the gear to neutral to stop the engine from seriously damaging itself, had to switch between drive and neutral in order to get the van to a safe place to turn off the vehicle. Remained having the same exact problem until we found a dealer who installed an upgrade fo"

Paul D., KS (2009 Chrysler Town & Country Touring 3.8-L V6)

"After owning the vehicle a short while the ABS, traction control and one other light came on and will not turn off. Shortly after that the speedometer quit working as well. The engine also began to have about 1/2 of the power it had in the past. It still runs but no power. It also periodically will not start at all. It acts as though the batter is dead when it isn't and a little lightening bolt light comes on in the instrument cluster. I looked online and have found this is a very common problem with this vehicle. It, however hasn't been recalled."

Jeff R., TX (2009 Chrysler Town & Country Touring 4.0-L V6)

The car was classified as used because Chrysler had transferred ownership to Chrysler holding company. Not only did that limit warranty, but canceled it completely even though it had only 7 miles on odometer."

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Limited Lifetime Power Train Warranty repair: Transmission improperly downshifted while in cruise control at 45 MPH on a moderate hill from drive to low gear in August 2018. Local dealer repaired with sensor replacement (10 days in shop). Same failure again 2 weeks later, back into dealer for 3+ weeks for complete overhaul. Time delay due to only 1 transmission tech available for all dealership work. Should have been rebuilt the first time. Runs like new since."

James L., GA (2009 Chrysler Town & Country Touring 3.8-L V6)

"It is in the shop now, so I don't really know the extent of the repairs yet. So the next figure is just an estimate that I have no idea is accurate."

William F., FL (2009 Chrysler Town & Country)

Lester V., PA (2009 Chrysler Town & Country Touring 3.8-L V6)

"Transmission seized and had it towed to dealer and replaced. Fortunately it was under warranty as it was over $2500. Also Had my wheel bearings replaced. I am now experiencing the same problem. The noise they make while driving is extremely loud."
