For 2005, Chrysler addressed a major shortcoming of the Grand Caravan by improving its interior flexibility. The second- and third-row seats can now be folded flat into the floor, ending the need to remove heavy seats. There's also more in-cabin storage space. However, the increased flexibility doesn't compensate for the number of areas where the Grand Caravan falls short of the better minivans.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The coarse engine produces only adequate acceleration and fuel economy. The interior is noisier than the top-rated minivans, and the ride can get unsettled over uneven surfaces or in bumpy corners.

Normal routine brake wear

"notice that the brake pedal became slushy when braking."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)

"Loud squeaking every time I touch the brakes. Seems to be a glazing issue. Plenty of brake pad. Can't burn it off, after repeated trying. Two mechanics think replacing the brake pads won't be enough to solve -- have to turn the rotors, as well. So...I live with the annoyance and embarrassment"

Deb B., NE (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint on the roof is faded and is gone down to primer on parts of the roof. Otherwise it is good on the hood and sides. I have had other cars as long or longer with greater mileage yet with no paint damage at all"

Charles A., TX (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.2-L V6)

"Paint wore off all around the door handles"

D B., FL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan None 3.3-L V6)

"The clear coat has blemished and peeled from this vehicle. I expect the next step will be the remaining paint will fade and come off. There is no known repair for this paint problem except total strip and repaint of the entire vehicle at SIGNIFICANT COST! The paints used or the processes used to paint this car and many others I see on the road from many different manufactures have the exact same problem. My 1994 Buick Le Sabre did the exact same problem. These paints they are using must be defective. They should go back to the Alkaloid Enamels. My 1986 Isuzu has no clear coat and no problems with the paint."

What Owners Say

Alignment

"The van pulls to the right really bad and tire wear is uneven. The shop wouldn't align it because things were so loose that it wouldn't even work to align it (ball joints? rods? I'm note sure). So I'm not sure what to do and just let it stand for the last 6 months."

Anonymous, UT (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.8-L V6)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"hose leaked and had to be replaced."

Anonymous, IL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.8-L V6)

Anonymous, FL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.2-L V6)
Shocks or struts

"Worn out, partially broken left front strut digging into driver's side tire. Replaced with a second hand set of struts. Now is fine."

Stephen O., NY (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan None 3.3-L V6)

"The mechanic that I used at one time put the wrong struts on my van. I don't know why and then he lied and said they were the right ones. I didn't have any problem with the front of my van crubbing on the curve before he changed the struts."

Anonymous, LA (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.2-L V6)

"After 230000 miles the struts needed replacing"

Anonymous, FL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.2-L V6)

Jesse O., IL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.2-L V6)
Springs or torsion bars

"The bolts on one end of the passenger side spring rusted thru and broke, corrosion was to great to fix and both rear springs required replacing"

Anonymous, OH (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan None 3.3-L V6)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Rack and pinion was leaking. Causing steering issues."

David V., VA (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)

"Added Lucas power steering Fluid and system cam back to not needing replacement Boy was I happy as Dodge wanted over $700 to replace the Rack!"

John H., FL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)

"Needed to replace rack and pinion"

Jesse O., IL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.2-L V6)
Steering wheel vibration

"The wheels are out of alignment, so I get some vibration."

Anonymous, LA (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.2-L V6)
Tie rods

"My husband is the car guy. I know the car is waiting for donation pickup. The tire rods are rotted, or something and brakes are not working right, so the car is undrivable. I don't know all the problems."

Susan T., ON (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.8-L V6)
Tire wear is uneven

"Bought a new set of 4 tires in August of 2016, and by December of 2017, they were showing wear as if the front alignment was off. Replaced the tires and went for an alignment, only to be told the tie rods needed to be replaced on both front tires. No problems since."

Daniel K., AL (2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)
Wheel bearings

"Starting at around 150,000 miles, I've had to replace the rear hub bearing assemblies (both sides) twice, and one has recently started acting up again (rear-right)."

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Replaced by the dealer, with a refurbished compressor, without disclosing it was refurbished at the time of quoting. When it failed just after the warranty expired, I went to an independent shop that installed a new compressor, which works well. That the dealer quoted a repair without disclosing it was a refurbished unit, was devious."

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Replaced the EGR myself but error code returned 6 months later. Had it replaced twice by Firestone and the error code returned intermittently - on for 2 weeks, off for 1 week.
