Chrysler addressed a major shortcoming of the Grand Caravan by improving its interior flexibility. The second- and third-row seats can now be folded flat into the floor, ending the need to remove heavy seats. There's also more in-cabin storage space. However, the increased flexibility doesn't compensate for the number of areas where the Grand Caravan falls short of the better minivans.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Chrysler addressed a major shortcoming of the Grand Caravan by improving its interior flexibility. The second- and third-row seats can now be folded flat into the floor, ending the need to remove heavy seats. There's also more in-cabin storage space.

However, the increased flexibility doesn't compensate for the number of areas where the Grand Caravan falls short of the better minivans. The coarse engine produces only adequate acceleration and fuel economy. The interior is noisier than the top-rated minivans, and the ride can get unsettled over uneven surfaces or in bumpy corners.

"Low tire pressure dash indicator now blinks despite filling tires to specification. Battery in tire rims died, replacement quotes up to $185 each. May buy on-line to save cost but will service centers install customer provided parts? Chimes once at start up and dash light blinks with bad DVD player"

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine consumes an abnormal amount of oil; no leaks. No smoke out the exhaust yet but Precision Tune doesn't recommend replacing the head gasket and/or seals due to the age of the car. Replaced O2 sensors and two catalytic converters (2nd one under warranty), probably because of oil fouling. Service engine light turns on intermittently. Will sell as is and buy a used Toyota minivan or small SUV if unable to pass emissions at next inspection in September."

Clifton D., NC (2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)

"Original thrust bearing installed incorrectly. Replaced thrust bearing, front oil seal, timing belt, water pump."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Transmission leaks

"The transmission was leaking from the gear switching box. It cost about $700 to repair. It should have been under the lifetime warranty, but Fiat does not want to honor the Daimler warranties, so they find reasons to void it. I was very disappointed. The lifetime drive train warranty was a factor in purchasing."

Anonymous, CO (2007 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.8-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"The transmission was supposed to part of the "drive train lifetime warranty" but Fiat Chrysler is trying really hard not to honor Chrysler warranties. We've always had it serviced at the dealer. This was a $700 repair."
