Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"It did not keep the temperature a constant level. It would be sharply cold for a bit, then get warm, then to cool. It was very unreliable"

Dawn C., GA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"In the start of hotter weather, the Air Conditioning unit was only blowing our air. It did not get cold."

Anonymous, MD (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)

"The rear compressor was leaking Freon. When they tried to replace it they could not get the line from the front of the engine off so they had to replace Thrace line also. It wound up being a $2600 Repair bill."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"This has happened at least twice with this car. The temperature control does not go to cool on the passenger side. In the middle of summer, the drivers side has regular a/c and the passenger side has high heat."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"The rear compressor started leaking, so the A/C didn't work. It's located near the rear wheel, so it rusted. The solution was to remove it so there's no A/C in the back, which we rarely use."

Anonymous, ME (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Unsure 3.6-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"Passenger and rear temp was only hot no matter where you set the dial"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)
Blower (fan) motor

"Fan stopped working altogether after a short period of giving signs it was going to give out."

Paul M., CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan American Value 3.6-L V6)

"rear ac motor is making rattling noises. must be replaced, but I haven't done so yet"

Paul K., FL (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"The fan didn't work unless you turned the control far to the right and back to the left"

Anonymous, MN (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"Down to one speed - medium"

Anonymous, WI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Condenser

"The condenser for the rear A/C is located behind one of the rear wheels and gets sprayed by road salt and other debris, causing premature failure."

R D., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Had to go to 2 dealers to determine that the conderser had a leak. The vehicle had only 20000 km on it but the warranty had run out so of course the dealer would not fix it without charging me the full $900 to repair it Fortunately I am an aggressive person and contacted Chrysler Canada and managed to get them to pay for the work in a contrived manner. They contacted the dealer and got a lower rate which I then had to pay the dealer and sent them the receipt which was reimbursed to me a couple o"

Mary J., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)
Evaporator

"First the rear evaporator was replaced, then had to take car in again because the A/C expansion valve on the evaporator failed"

Anonymous, IN (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)
Heater system

"system just blew hot air all the time on passenger side."

William L., AB (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"The passenger side climate would only blow hot air. The actuated door that controls heat seized."

W L., TX (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Every year I have to take the van in to fix the rear heating fix as it gets stuck on heat when I first start up the ac takes long time to get cold air in the back vents"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"AC lines to rear evaporator leaking ;"

John A., RI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"I had to have Freon added because the van was not cooling."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"The vehicle I purchased came with the front passenger & rear passenger climate controls (heat/air) After one year (give or take) the front/rear air conditioning malfunctioned. I took it to an heat/air conditioner mechanic & it was found that the pipes providing the air conditioning to the rear compartment had rotted out thus releasing all the refrigerant. Rather than replace the pipes (very expensive) I opted (upon suggestion by the mechanic) to have the a/c pipes leading to the rear - sealed - thus leaving the heat pipes activated in the rear section. This has worked out well but cost me around $500.00 to do this, The Dealer said there was no recall but almost all owners of similar products, had the same failures."

Gordon J., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"had the system charged twice already? new van low mileage? I was informed I may have a expensive repair coming."

Anonymous, MI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Leak was in the rear, took several days in the shop because they didn't have the parts in stock. Entire from and side of the van had to be removed to find the leak. Took two trys in the shop to fix the problem"

Christine B., NJ (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"After replacing the evaporator twice and still finding a leak the dealer finally found a leak in the line from the front to back A/C. Only had about 25K km on car but warranty expired and I had to pay hundreds of dollars to tix it."

Mary J., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"I had an antifreeze leak diagnosed by an incompetent dealer who replaced two hoses that were supposedly leaking on a vehicle with 20K km on it which I had to pay for because my warranty had expired. This dealer replaced the system with incorrect antifreeze because they just replaced what was already in there from the manufacturer. I figured out from the manual that they had put the wrong stuff in there because I had priced the cost of the correct antifreeze as $75 and they charged me much less"

Mary J., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"The AC seemed to blow less-than-cool air all of a sudden. I took the car to the service and they discovered a leak. Although summer is approaching, I haven't fixed, because the cost is high and this happened just after the warranty expired"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"leaked out over winter"

C W., TX (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"leaks in rear ac evaporator lines"

Anonymous, RI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"On a hot day AC was not putting out "cold" air. Took it in and they recharged the system with dye to see it a leak could be detected. I was supposed to bring it back again when it isn't working again. To date it is working fine (more than 2 months since I took it in)."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"When I brought the car in for service, earlier this month, I had been having trouble with the car pulling to the right, sometimes very aggressively. It was found to have rust spots on one of the ABS sensor rings, right front wheel, hidden by the brake rotor. When I braked, not every time, I could feel and hear, what sounded as if I was trying to brake on ice. With corresponding brake pedal pulsing."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)
Calipers

"Well, brakes were squeaking. Replaced calipers (frozen) & brake pads. Pads changed out twice already, but the breaks continue us to squeak....loudly"

Mary S., WI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Sticking on binding"

David S., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"rear callapers seize up.,causing premeture wear on roters and pads"

Anonymous, MB (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"Stepped on brake while going 70 miles an hour - calipers came loose on rear passenger side, scrapping along rotor. Van still able to stop with remaining brake system."

Anonymous, WI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Normal routine brake wear

"Rear pads and calipers are way to small, especially for a van, I'm always hauling stuff or people or both to family functions. Recommended I do the fronts within the next 5000mi."

Anonymous, MI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Parking brake

"Nut/knob on the front end of the parking brake cable broke off. I was not difficult to repalce the assembly and cost about $40 for the part."

Brian S., CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)
Premature brake wear

"BRAKES NEED TO BE REPLACED EVERY 18 MONTHS. I'VE TRIED DEALER AND HIGH END AFTER MARKET PARTS WITH THE SAME RESULT, I BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT DESIGNED LARGE ENOUGH FOR THE VEHICLE."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"Brakes wear out much sooner than they should."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"The brake pads wore out sooner than I thought and gave me no warning until they had already damaged all four rotors."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"Front brake pads & rotors needed replacing at 20000 km, I consider this to be ridiculous, far too short, argued with the dealer & settled they provided the parts & I paid installation. Rear pads & rotors replaced at 35000 km, I had lifetime parts installed by the Dodge dealer at my wife's insistence, I would have gone to Midas for a saving of $200.00. Warranty on brakes is 1 year or 20,000 km, absolutely ridiculously"

K R., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)

"Had to have rear rotors replaced when new and again with 25K km."

Mary J., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"Less than 20,000 km had to replace front brakes, complained strongly to the dealer & they covered parts & I paid installation. Warranty on brakes is 20,000 km, rediculous! 39,000 km advised rear brakes need replacement, cost for lifetime rotors & pads $600.00 +. My reaction is to go to Midas (cost $450.) but my wife wants to use Chrysler"

K R., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)

"Only got 60000 out of the original brakes and 60000 out of second set had to replace all the way around including rotors brake warning broke off so I did not the brakes were done till I heard metal on metal FYI I do a lot of highway driving"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"Replaced rear rotors and pads"

David S., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"Just before front pad & rotor replacement, a vibration was felt in the steering when brakes applied. No safety issue but unnerving."

Robert K., NY (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)
Regular brake failure

"Discovered with an oil change and tire rotation."

Anonymous, IL (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Rotors

"Rusting made it extremely difficult to remove the front rotors"

Robert K., NY (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)

"Brakes pads wore unevenly and grooved the rotors. Started on the left. I replace the pads and rotor. Later same problem on the right followed up with replacement of pads and rotor on the right. I would have expected another 30,000 miles. I don't know why the prblem occurred, but replacing the pads and rotors myself for $130 and a couple of hours saved $400 paying to have it done."

Brian S., CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"They warped after warranty and constantly caused shaking in the steering. the brake pads wore out with no warning and caused damage to the rotors. I had to replace all four rotors which was very costly."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"On any faurly rough pavement, there is a constant rumbling sound coming from the suspension - probably due to the Stow and Go seating cavities under the floor which act as sound chambers enhancing suspension noises to the cabin area."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"wind noise through sliding doors, head lights fogged up."

Anonymous, MB (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"Noisy ride in general. This is the 3rd Dodge Grand Caravan we have had and each one gets a little more noisy. In addition, a rumble sound has developed that manifests most often when going over bumpy roads. More noticeable from the passenger seat."

Anonymous, IL (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T 3.6-L V6)

"Ticking noise. Not real noticeable to start. Now, it’s really loud. Took it to 2 different places, got two different “reasons”: neither place wanted to touch it. One said that called Chrysler & they supposedly said it was the fuel injector & recommended not to try to fix it. Supposedly said that the noise should be ignored, that it doesn’t affect anything (?!). And even if they changed out the fuel injector, the noise would still be there. The noise is getting louder & louder. Still drives OK, but the fuel economy is decreasing! Frustrated. Will take it to a dealership to see what they say. Looked online & the cost is hefty if it was replaced."

Mary S., WI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Squeaks from the doors when it rains"

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"Fortunately covered under lifetime warranty as cost would have been $3,000+"

Robert K., NY (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Since it is a closed system the dealer is supposed to check the the transmission. 6 days after getting back from the dealer the transmission failed"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)

"First year had torque converter (?) fail, was stranded. 6th year transmission was shifting very jerkily, needed entire replacement."

Tom T., OH (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"New one week into dealer, no problem per dealer, next year same service check, no problem per dealer, third year the same , fourth year slippage repaired, the following year a complete transmission rebuild. Extremely poor Mfg. and dealer support. Expect recall should have been issued by Mfg. but was not, dealer apparently does not like what warranty paid."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew 3.6-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"It is not universal, but the rubber trim gaskets to seal the sliding doors are not holding up well and need to be replaced. Parts of them have broken off and are missing, not so as to cause leaks to the car, but they have torn, and do some flapping around."

Anonymous, NM (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"Rubber seal on driver side Sliding Door ripped at 10,000 miles. Dealer estimate to replace was $750 which I thought was obscene"

Anonymous, WA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Aluminum hood was replaced under warranty because of oxidization. Evidently this was caused by improper preparation before factory paint when new."

R D., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Before I owned the vehicle for a full year I noticed bubbling of the paint on the hood. It was rusting under that bubbling."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan American Value 3.6-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"When the dealer replaced the range sensor they told me that the oil cooler lines needed replacement as they are leaking. I haven't noticed any leaks on my driveway, so I am skeptical and am going this coming week to an independent garage to have them tell me if they are indeed in need of replacement."

Richard V., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"Sluggish steering. Especially in colder weather."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"The cooling lines were leaking--we had purchased a warranty and it was covered."

Anonymous, PA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)
Rough shifting

"Initially the transmission was subject to very hard shirts in parking lots between drive and reverse - dealer applied a software fix which somewlhat reduced these hard shofts. But at 70,000 miles I noticed a distinct clunking sound from the transmission between light engine acceleration and engine braking. Took to the dealer on extended warranty and had fixed."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"Slipping transmission ultimately resulted in rebuilding the transmission. Another reason I will never own another Dodge product"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Transmission leaks

"Same as previous comments."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission fluid was leaking...saw the tell-tale red spots in the snow...when we had oil change--mechanics saw that it was leaking at the cooling lines--so we had bought an extended warranty--and it was covered."

"Transmission pan leaked at about 55,000 miles was the seal was replaced."

Anonymous, NE (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"I had intermittent CEL issues. When the CEL came on there was rough shifting and reluctance to downshift. Dealer could not diagnose because light was not on, but claimed it needed a new transmission range sensor. It cost me $1000, but a few days later the CEL came on again, with more shifting issues. This time they diagnosed a faulty engine oil pump, which was replaced under warranty, but only after first telling me it was not covered under warranty. I showed them the warranty that explicitly states that the oil pump is covered in the power train warranty. No more issues with CEL or shifting after the pump replacement. I am skeptical that there really was an issue with the range sensor, and I am not so confident anymore that their assurance that this was not a warranty item was correct."

What Owners Say

Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone pairs, places call, and there is no sound for me or the other party (which means that I have to grab the phone and try to turn Bluetooth off to use the phone speaker- very annoying.)"

Voice control commands

"Bought the car for the in-dash navigation and expected to be able to do voice-commands for navigation in a high-end factory system (even my cheap dashboard model has it.). No such luck, have to pull over to program it, since it locks the function out in motion and will even allow a passenger to program it. Very annoying and a time waster- I keep my garmin on the dash instead!"

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"The Evaporative control valve near the fuel tank (sometimes referred to as a pump) developed a leak and showed up in the diagnostic system, first as a loose gas cap, then as a "small leak", and later on, as a large leak. It turns out that this one valve can cause all three failure modes to show up in the diagnotics. Replacing the valve (a $35.00 part) solved all three issues"

Stephen N., NY (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"EGR light would go on and off."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Fuel cap

"The vehicle is equipped with a negative pressure system. When the system detects a air leak in the gas tank system, through the gas cap, the check engine light comes on necessitating a trip to the garage & $50.00 to $75.00 to turn it off. I have purchased a new OEM gas cap product from the dealer etc. but if I don't keep the rim of the gas tank spout, shiny clean , this happens every time - expensive/frustrating - there has to be a better fix."

Gordon J., ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

"Receive an gas cap rot while driving. I purchased a new gas cap at the dealer and it fixed the problem."

Michael R., WA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 3.6-L V6)

Body control module

"Problem was with the controls on the left side of the searing wheel. This disabled functions like the Staring wheel heater, all display items that on the dashboard that are selected from the button on the steering wheel. The repair cost in excess of #2,000. Keyless entry

"both key fobs stopped working around 75000 miles. Replacements cost $330 each at dealer. Way to much. I understand Batteries Plus will do it for about $110 to $130 each. I have been using the door key just like in the old days."

John W., OH (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"The car came equipped with a keyless entry system, but the fob and the key are a single unit. In the past several months the buttons failed one by one. Currently none of the buttons on the key work, and swapping out batteries, keypad parts, cleaning the circuit board, etc did nothing to help. The key does still operate the car, but we are left using a manual key to open and lock the doors since a replacement key/fob unit is several hundred dollars even from a locksmith."

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

"Squeaking belt but it was the tensioner so both got replaced."

Anonymous, PA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Engine computer

"Replacing a fuse panel with a "TIPM" totally intograted power module seems to be a way a car company can charge you $1300.00 instead of being able to replace a $3.00 fuse. It also seems to cause a cascade of electrical errors that make it practically undrivable. I live in CA. When it start to fail while your in Colorado at 8 degrees in a record snowfall while attending your fathers funeral, you get real frustrated! First the car would hiccup. Like the engine would skip. Then the power locks fail"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"If the temperature gos below 40 degrees the Enginelight comes on. I start the van, open the gas cap, stepson the gas then close the gas cap. Engine light turns off."

Anonymous, WA (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Unsure 3.6-L V6)
Engine knock or ping

"Engine developed a pinging/clicking sound. Took the van to 3 different service providers, one of which was a Dodge dealership. I got three different answers as to what the problem is. All 3, though, told me that it would cost a LOT to fix it & was advised to live with it. What did seem to be a common thread in the answers from each service person was that it is a common occurrence with this model & year. And that Chrysler is aware of the problem but doesn't have a viable fix for it."

Mary S., WI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Oil leaks

"The oil filter housing is made of plastic instead of metal & cracked so that the entire engine was drenched in oil. Was told by technician that this is a common problem for this model. Even more frustrating is that the replacement housing is also plastic!! This repair cost me almost $700."

Mary S., WI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)
Problem(s) fueling the tank

"Fuel system is designed with a negative pressure system. The check engine light started to come on about 8 months ago. Problem traced to an air leak in the fuel pipe system - when gas tank full - light goes out - when half empty (approx.) light comes on. I used to go to the garage to get them to trouble shoot & take light off - too expensive so I purchase code meter etc. - very annoying & Chrysler doesn't acknowledge there is a problem but according to repair garages - it is."

Seat controls - manual

"We have had several problems with the interior fit and finish with this vehicle, but the problems with the seats have been the most severe and the most expensive. One of the second-row stow n go captains chairs first developed an issue where the headrest would no longer stay upright when the seat was open (the headrest mechanism somehow became disengaged from the rest of the seat). This happened after we had the vehicle for about a year. A couple months later the same seat developed another problem where it would no longer disconnect from the floor bracket, so we could no longer flip it forward into its storage bay - we could only fold the seat back down flat with the seat. This seems to be a widely-reported issue. In the last 12 months we also had big problems with the driver's seat. The support arm for one side of the seat back became loose and ultimately broke from the frame, so the seat back had no support on that side and flopped back and forth freely. Eventually the power motors in the seat completely failed and would no longer even slide the seat forward or back. This happened over the course of a couple months late last year. We had to replace the entire seat at our expense since it was not safe to drive. Neither of the seats were subject to abuse or rough treatment, and we've never experience problems like this in any other vehicle we've owned."

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveshaft or axle

"wheel bearings; rear hubs noisy"

John A., RI (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan SE 3.6-L V6)

"After switching to summer tires, I noticed a noise that increased as speed went up. I took the vehicle to the service centre and they something happened to the rear right axle. I had to have it replaced/repaired"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.6-L V6)
Electrical failure

"The TIPM (fuse box), specifically where the Fuel Pump Relay Fuse connects is poorly designed. It becomes loose and the fuel pump disengages causing the vehicle to go into limp mode if running, and failure to start if not running. The repair is pretty much a dealer diagnosed and dealer repair, around $1,200. This is a known problem which Chrysler refuses to acknowledge."
