This edition of the Ram 1500 is much improved since the last time we tested one in 2004. It rides and handles better -- and it's quieter. The optional full-time four-wheel-drive system and stability control are definite pluses. But the ride remains jittery, the rear seat is cramped, and getting in and out requires a steep climb. The 2500 heavy-duty version (which we also tested) has a harsher ride and longer braking.

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Alignment

"Once again it was the dealer service department which did not do the job correctly. I had new shocks and struts placed on the vehicle and they said they aligned the front end. Since my previous problem with the balance of the tires caused me to take the vehicle to a dedicated tire shop I also had them check the alignment. One side of the front end was out of the specification window and had to be re-aligned."

Tie rods

"Death wobble. Cost over 2K to fix"

Anonymous, ID (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)
Wheel balance

"It wasn't so much a manufacturer problem. It was a Dodge factory dealer service problem. They did not balance the new tires properly and I had a vibration over 65 MPH. I took it back to the service dept several times, each time saying it felt like an out of balance tire/wheel. Each time I asked them to balance the tires and see if they could find any other problem. Each time they assured me that they balanced the tires, but later when I got fed up and took it to a tire shop they found one wheel out of balance. Not just incorrect weights, but they hadn't even followed proper balance procedure. Once the tire shop balanced the tires the vibration was completely gone."

Wayne D., CT (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

Harvey S., CA (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7-L V8)

Anonymous, (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT 5.7-L V8)

Finally took it to a shop that specialized in repairing auto A/C, and they had to replace a bad/leaking compressor, evaporator, and that FINALLY solved the issue,"

Anonymous, TX (2007 Dodge Ram 1500)
Heater system

"Winter, heat wouldn't work"

Anonymous, NC (2007 Dodge Ram 1500 3.7-L V6)

"The flap that controls the flow of air down to the feet is defective resulting in no heat to the floor. I have descovered this is a common problem that occurs with any of the air control flaps in the system. I have been told it is a 10 hour job to correct the problem. I have just decided to put up with the issue as it is too costly to repair. For now I have just jammed a stick through the passenger side floor duct to slightly raise the flap up to get a bit of heat to the floor outlets."
