Ford Escape Plug-in Hybrid

Latest Model

2020 Model Redesign Year
The Escape plug-in hybrid is efficient and pleasant to drive, aided by its EPA-estimated 37 miles of electric range before it transitions to regular hybrid operation. It achieved a commendable 37 mpg overall while running as a hybrid in our tests. But, it's only available with front-wheel drive. It takes about five hours to recharge the battery on a 240-volt connection, or about 10 hours on 120 volts. The ride is steady and composed and handling is agile, although you do feel the extra weight from the PHEV hardware. Recent changes to the Escape include a larger infotainment screen that unfortunately brought less intuitive touch-based climate controls.
The firm front seats are flat and don't provide much support, and a limited range of adjustments compromises the driving position. The rear seat is quite roomy, and the plug-in system doesn't compromise cargo space.

2020-Present

2020 Model Redesign Year
The Escape plug-in hybrid comes as a front-drive only. It has a 37-mile electric range before transitioning into regular hybrid operation. As a hybrid, it has an EPA estimate of 40 mpg. It takes about five hours to charge the battery on a 240V charger. Unlike other PHEVs, when in electric mode, needing full power requires an agreement by the driver to turn on the gas engine. Drivers can reserve the electric portion for later if so chosen.
The PHEV's ride is steady and composed. Handling is quite agile. The cabin is reasonably quiet, whether on electric or gas. 2023 brings a 13.2-inch infotainment screen with touch-based climate controls. The front seats are decently comfortable, but a limited range of motion compromises the driving position for some. The rear seat is quite roomy when set to the rearmost position. 2026 will be the last year of production for the Escape plug-in hybrid.
