Ford's Expedition EL is a huge SUV capable of carrying nine passengers, their luggage and still tow a heavy trailer. For the most part, the EL succeeds. It has a roomy third-row seat, it handles reasonably well, and it accelerates strongly while towing our 5,000-pound test trailer. However, the Expedition's ride is stiff, it gets low fuel economy and the engine frequently sounds coarse and strained.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Engine is adequate, but is somewhat underpowered. Handling is good for a vehicle this size."

Jerry G., VA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Had to get new tires at 60,000 miles. Car still in perfect alignment."

JAY C., SC (2013 Ford Expedition)

"This is a large SUV and it needs to have the appropriate size engine to get up and go. We take long road trips through the mountains. This vehicle has the guts and the handling to make those trip with piece of mind. We have traveled in blizzard, rain storms and terrible wind. We are always impressed with its handling."

Odella F., ND (2013 Ford Expedition)

"I step on the gas petal and it gos"

Anonymous, OR (2013 Ford Expedition)

"for a heavy vehicle it is very nimble, excellent turning circle, firm suspension, excellent sway control and adequate acceleration from the V8"

C M., TX (2013 Ford Expedition)

"We own our Expedition for its size and towing capacity. It takes all our stuff from Wisconsin to Florida in winter and tows our camper in summer. Very comfortable, safe, strong and reliable! Good looking too. We love it!"

Anonymous, WI (2013 Ford Expedition)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The most comfortable seats of any vehicle I have ever owned. A very smooth, quite ride, especially considering it is on a truck frame."

Jerry G., VA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Very smooth ride"

Anonymous, GU (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Extremely comfortable for long journeys."

Anonymous, LA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Driver's seat trim (by seat controls) chronically breaks off tabs holding it on if you "slide" out of seat rather than lifting yourself out/in seat. Have had trouble with controls that auto-fold both side mirrors."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Automatic stepless fan speed works perfectly whether heating or cooling. Dual zones works very well."

JAY C., SC (2013 Ford Expedition)

"The seats in this vehicle are by far the most comfortable of any vehicle I've owned. Terrible fuel mileage, but take this vehicle on long trips due its comfort."

TIMOTHY H., VA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Heated and Cooling seats; Driver 1 & 2 memory seats for driver's seat; seat adjustments (forward back up and down)"

BEATE C., VA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Seats are comfortable but there is not cloth seat option for the features we like. Also, the seat cooling mechanics do not work properly."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Ford Expedition)

"Large, comfortable seats. Rides well and is relatively quiet on the freeway. We use it anytime there is a trip of 35 or more miles (one way}. As a daily driver, it is awkward to drive around town and avoid using it for that purpose as much as possible."

B H., CA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"We take long trips (2200 miles) in our Ford Expedition. Many days we drive for 12-14 hours only stopping for gas. The seats are so comfortable you can sit for long cycles and not feel sore."

Odella F., ND (2013 Ford Expedition)

JAMES K., CA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"The mpg is too low"

Anonymous, NC (2013 Ford Expedition)

"It was a good deal - runs great and is very comfortable"

STEPHEN K., CA (2013 Ford Expedition)

"As a large vehicle that I use for our family and for hauling a boat this is one of the smoothest, quietest, and best vehicles available. Love the ride and the handling and the capabilities."
