The Ford Ranger falls far short of modern pickup-truck standards. It's ungainly and stiff-riding; has a rough and noisy, inefficient engine; and a cramped, uncomfortable cabin. The interior is crudely finished. Compact dimensions and a usefully sized bed are the Ranger's only pluses. Even if you took thousands off its list price, the Ranger still would not be a bargain.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Pat B., BC (2004 Ford Ranger)

"It has quick acceleration, and the 4x4 feature is excellent in the winter snow and on icy roads."

Cox S., AB (2004 Ford Ranger)

Jonathan W., PA (2004 Ford Ranger)

Anonymous, CO (2004 Ford Ranger)

"The ride is fairly smooth for a truck (ie: not real stiff and bumpy). I like the contour of the seats and the unibody construction (no separate adjustable headrest. The ride is really quiet with the Michelin tires I have on it."

Anonymous, NM (2004 Ford Ranger)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"For a "small" truck it is very versatile, good positive steering and acceleration. Very good load carrying capability. It is a truck so rides like what you would expect a truck to be. Seating is comfortable."

James P., VA (2004 Ford Ranger)

"For the price, this has been an excellent, reliable, easy to use vehicle. I needed a 4X4 as a workhorse, and it has done the job. The heating and cooling system is simple and effective. The radio is a simple button and dial system that is easy to use while driving. It does not have the most comfortable seats, and drives "like a truck", but it is a work truck, not a luxury vehicle."

Anonymous, MI (2004 Ford Ranger)

"The truck is a real workhorse. Will tow small trailers with ease. Very reliable."

D M., CA (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Truck has been very reliable"

Steve W., OR (2004 Ford Ranger)

"I have not had to have any major repairs on this vehicle since I bought it, just the usual routine maintenance, tires and battery"

Anonymous, NM (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Good truck for the money"

Anonymous, MI (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Great value"

Anonymous, NH (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Our Ranger is a champ for what it is designed to do: carry loads anywhere you need it to go. A truck like this is not intended to be glamorous or thrilling, but we'll probably keep it forever because of how versatile it is."

Anonymous, MN (2004 Ford Ranger)

"after 14 yrs of ownership the vehicle is still worth 1/2 of what I paid for it and is running well."

Dennis M., MN (2004 Ford Ranger)

"I feel that I have gotten very good value for my Ranger. I have used it for personal and business purposes, including heavy towing, with high reliability. It has over 200,000 miles on it with no major breakdowns."

Ron P., VA (2004 Ford Ranger)

"great value fo price"

Anonymous, OR (2004 Ford Ranger)

"My 2004 Ford Ranger is still running after 14 years. I have no plans to part with it."

Lois S., OH (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Price performance value all out standing only issue front end remains good resale value"

Anonymous, NJ (2004 Ford Ranger)

"I bought this vehicle for my long commute for better gas mileage and still have truck when I needed it"

Anonymous, AL (2004 Ford Ranger)

"As a basic small truck, the Ranger is very versatile and is reliable and easy to maintain."

Richard N., FL (2004 Ford Ranger)

"It is a good vehicle"

Anonymous, MI (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Many problems,both front wheel bearings,starter,rust,rust,rust."

Dean E., IL (2004 Ford Ranger)

"The truck still runs good and looks good after 14 years."

Steve W., OR (2004 Ford Ranger)

"It was a great deal at the time"

Allen M., MA (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Mixed bag - the truck was larger than I had wanted, but the maintenance has been negligible so far (85,000 km). I purchased it used and likely over-paid by about 10%, but it did fit most of the features for which I was searching, and there were not a lot on the market at that time; I am a bit confused that Ford has discontinued the model - on the plus side, the present value is holding up well."

JAMES B., SK (2004 Ford Ranger)

"It's a very dependable little truck. Hauls garbage with the best of them."

F M., NC (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Have had no major component failures in 220,000 miles. VERY satisfied with performance relative to cost of operation and maintenance."

Anonymous, NV (2004 Ford Ranger)

"When I bought my Ranger It had very low mileage and I thought the price was very good. The Ranger is a very plain version with air conditioning and anti lock brakes. It is two wheel drive and has very good power. The ranger performs very well on dry roads however as with most pick-ups the rear is light and lacks traction on wet and or snowy, icy roads. I wish it had four wheel drive for that reason. I am very happy with gas mileage and I have never had to add oil between changes."

PHILIP G., CO (2004 Ford Ranger)

"We have driven the truck for 11 years. Unfortunately, Ford no longer makes the Ranger in the US. Hopefully, they will again make the Ranger for sale in the US by 2018. If so, and if our 2004 Ranger is having problems, we would consider buying another Ranger. The truck has been almost trouble-free over the 11 years we have driven it. The Ford service people have been great and we have down scheduled service over the years. I love this truck as it has been the most dependable and comfortable"

Anonymous, TX (2004 Ford Ranger)

"It hauls just about whatever I can fit in the bed, and it does so reliably with no issues to any mechanical or engine-related functions. Great used purchase that I am very satisfied with."

Anonymous, TN (2004 Ford Ranger)

"Just the right size. Will easily haul half a ton of mulch. Gets 29 mpg --- I keep careful track of that. I haven't had a single problem with it in 12 years and 106,000 miles. Original brakes, muffler, shocks, clutch. It's been perfect. And they quit making them."

PAUL K., NC (2004 Ford Ranger)

"$5000 cost"
