Although SUVs remain the most popular choice for new-car buyers, compact and midsized sedans offer a compelling alternative. These models effectively blend impressive fuel economy, generous passenger room, and flexible cargo space into a package that’s often more enjoyable to drive than the average taller and heavier SUV.

As Consumer Reports’ auto experts have seen in testing at our Auto Test Center, the hybrid versions of today’s sedans are superior to their gas-powered siblings in almost every measurable way. In fact, for the first time in our history, every vehicle on Consumer Reports’ 2026 Top Picks list is available with an electrified powertrain.

More on Cars

These hybrid models typically provide faster acceleration, quieter cabins, and class-leading fuel efficiency, making them the most practical choice for long-term ownership. If you’ve been planning to purchase a new sedan, there’s no reason not to consider a hybrid—unless you like going to the gas station more often than necessary.

Below, we present the best hybrid cars we’ve tested, ranked by their Overall Score, factoring in road-test performance, owner satisfactionpredicted reliability, and safety. Be aware that Overall Scores change over time as new information, such as reliability data, becomes available. The model pages always reflect our latest ratings.

Each one comes standard with automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, AEB that operates at highway speeds, blind spot warning (BSW), and rear cross traffic warning (RCTW), unless noted. Most of these models carry our Green Choice designation, which highlights the vehicles with the cleanest emissions.
