Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The Sierra, and its twin the Chevrolet Silverado, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's. An assist system makes the tailgate easy to lift and prevents it from dropping open, easing cargo-handling duties. And at 16 mpg overall with a 5.3-liter V8, our four-wheel-drive Crew Cab model got impressive fuel economy.

In addition, a relatively low ride height eases access, the dashboard controls are simple to use, and the Silverado provides impressive towing and payload capacities.

"cable came off transmission and had to be tied up just to keep going till service form gm."

Anonymous, (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SL 5.3-L V8)
Rough shifting

"8 speed trans shifts hard between 1st and 2nd on regular basis."

Anonymous, (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Noticed the issue around 70,000 kms. Transmission was hesitating in shifting in lower gears (mainly 1 - 2) Upon shifting into second gear under low throttle pressure at low speeds (noticed more from a standstill) the transmission would shift rather rough resulting in a feeling like my truck was being pushed from behind. GM Dealership diagnosed the issue as a programming issue in the transmission. This issue was resolved by downloading new transmission software onto the engine computer at a cost of about $120.00 CAD"

Anonymous, ON (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Clunking when the truck is slowing down or coming to a stop. Also seems worse after a longer period of time on a highway."

Gavin B., AB (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 5.3-L V8)

"problem when cold dealer wants me to leave overnight so they can diagnose when cold; havn't do so yhet."

Anonymous, KS (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)

"Hesitation and rough up shifting and down shifting from 1st gear. Especially when vehicle is not warmed up"

Anonymous, TX (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, RI (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"GM said noises and erratic shifts are caused from the 8 speed adaptive transmission. My wife's BMW 328xi has an 8 speed transmission that shifts perfectly. GM's 8 speed tranny is problematic and they won't fix it"

Anonymous, OH (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 6.2-L V8)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"In 2019 this vehicle began having some issues that I thought were the transmission. Driving down the street (speed limit 40 mph) and would experience noticable shifting issues. Either constant shifting or not shifting while having high rpm. We called the dealer and they set up a tow and service. The tow driver took me and the truck to the dealer. The dealer checked it in and set me up with a courtesy vehicle (a new version of the same truck). The issue wasn't the transmission but the torque converter. I didn't remember purchasing any extended warranty but my wife reminded me that we did. It was all covered by the warranty. The warrenty is a separate subject but I normally never purchase an extended warranty - I think after saying "not interested" about 3 times they came down to a price that my wife couldn't turn down. Glad we did in this instance. Thanks"

Anonymous, (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission shifts hard when going into 2nd gear. Does not do it all the time and dealership has only upgraded the software which did NOT fix the problem"

Anonymous, (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

"Rough idle is persistent. GM claims it is within their parameters. Very rough gear change at low speeds. Still happens. Torque converter has been changed. This solved one problem but created additional problems."

Larry L., MI (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, TX (2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 6.2-L V8)
