Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The Civic has a black trim over the chrome trim of each side window. The black plastic has been pealing off in pieces. This gives the car an unfinished and unkempt finished look. Spoke to other owners and repair people, this is a common problem with the Civic."

Anonymous, CO (2002 Honda Civic LX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

The blue paint just below that on the car door is peeling as well (not oxidizing...actually chunks of paint flaked off). Rust

"Rust, I've never had random and specific rust all over the car. The hood has a rust spot. The back doors of the car and the wheel wells are filled with rust. Rust has affected the windows of both back doors as well. The windows can't be opened because they are rusted internally and both doors have a problem with the exterior latches jamming and actually coming off the car. Honda quoted a huge price to fix them or I could replace both back doors. Impossible now I'm retired. Honda's time as a reliable car seems to have passed. I will never buy another after this rust bucket. Honda did replace the small block years ago and the engine runs well but the car is slowly rusting away."

Linda B., PA (2002 Honda Civic 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Rust around wheel wells and door bottoms due to salt. Have had extensive preventative painting done to keep it looking nice. also had to have a rear passenger door replaced"

Anonymous, NY (2002 Honda Civic LX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Well it's old. If it were just the body panels rusting I'd be happy 'cause I'd just replace them from the junkyard. Problem is the rear fender is rusting out which is part of the frame. Alas; will have to save up to replace it. Shame they don't"

Anonymous, CT (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Believe the car was in a flood but I was not told this by the Honda dealership when I purchased it. They replaced the small block while it was under warranty when it had cylinder issues. Said it was an engine fault. Back panels by back doors and fro"

Anonymous, PA (2002 Honda Civic LX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"The car is rusting out over the rear wheels and at the bottom of the doors. Car is washed including the undercarriage regularly. I blame the rust on the liquid crap that Connecticut uses on its roads in the winter"

Anonymous, CT (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Light rust on body area near tires. We live in an area with HUGE road salt USge so this is not surprising for a 13-year old vehicle"

Forrest M., IA (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, GA (2002 Honda Civic LX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"tail-lights and horn together failed, was not just a blown fuse, Had to replace entire fuse/relay box"

Anonymous, TX (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Front turn signals failed when rainy/humid. Saw several dealers over years. One ID'd the bulb holders as aftermarket and poor fit. I bought the car new. Those aftermarket items could only have been added by the mfr or a Honda dealer circa 2002"

John N., MA (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"The turn signals became intermittent and then failed completely. One of the connectors on the wiring harness melted for some reason and had to be replaced. Because of the age of the vehicle, the replacement part was purchased at a salvage yard. So far, so good. I believe the failure may have been related to the engine compartment being "detailed". That was done as a favor by the mechanic, but I wish he had not done it. The detailing for sure caused two sensors to fail (which were replaced at no charge to me) and I believe the same detailing caused the turn signal issue. I have instructed the mechanic never to detail my engine compartment again in the future."

Anonymous, PA (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"The gauges have back lights. The lights are flickering and then burning out. Have to take full dash off to replace"

What Owners Say

Accessory belts or pulleys

Juan V., NC (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)
Engine computer

"After the engine mount problem was resolved, an issue with the engine computer occurred. It also involved warning lights and lack of power while driving, so it may have also aggravated the earlier problems with the engine mounts. Repairs fixed it."

"Check engine light comes on when nothing is wrong with the way car is running. Dealer can't reboot or reprogram computer"

Richard S., MT (2002 Honda Civic LX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)
Engine mounts

"The car gradually lost power on a 10 mile long commuting trip. In the end, it would only go about 10 to 15 miles per hour while crossing a high-traffic bridge where I could not safely pull off. I wanted to have it towed to a shop, but my husband came and managed to drive it to a repair shop. The repairs fixed the problem."

Anonymous, TN (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Have replaced the front engine mount about 35k miles ago, now it's again making noise. Honda has a rubbery ring within the mount... this shrinks, causing slack in the mount. Frenquently when breaking or taking off from stop, you can hear a loud click noise from it. Feels like engine is shifting from torque"

Rick L., CA (2002 Honda Civic EX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"The mechanic told me that the engine mounts needed replacement. I had to take his word for that as I was unaware of any problems. After the replacement, the car vibrated more than before, and I complained about it immediately. The mechanic and I agreed that I would live with the problem for a bit to give the mounts a chance to be broken in. Based on results, that was the right approach as the vibration has diminished over time."

Catalytic converter

"The longer I keep this vehicle the more I'm sure the dealership sold me a flood damaged car, and knew it. I've never had the problems I have now with prior Honda cars. The catalytic converter rusted out with mud inside it. I had to replace it and the entire muffler system. Will try EVAP part under air filter up front as that seems to be a common fix. I hate EVAP problems. Also, a P1457 and can't figure that one out either. The voltage part in fuse box have replaced twice, but it always comes back after about 6 months. Reading 14.4volts, but nothing gone wrong yet. Erase codes to pass inspection annually. They always come back though. Runs great though! Really like this car as it's fun to drive. Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"I believe both doors were, before I purchased the car, submerged. The door handles are slapped back in when they pulled free and the track for the electric window no longer works in either back door. The solution from various mechanics and repair places is to replace the doors, which are now developing rust along with the back 1/4 pqnels. I complained to Honda Corporate about the vehicle condition as I've owned other Honda's and for far longer and never had the rust or paint peeling issues. They listened but had no solutions. I firmly believe this vehicle should not have been sold second hand from a Honda dealership. It should have been sold for parts only."

Karl T., MN (2002 Honda Civic HX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)

"Ignition switch did not work properly. Was able to pull the key out without actually shutting the engine off."

Slipping transmission

"Transmission died. Honda service said I had to replace it for cost $3000 to $4500 (rebuilt 3nd party part with 1 year warranty or Honda part). With also gasket and light engine oil leaks, I instead bought new car"

"I would have some good things to say about this car if it was not equipped with Honda’s CVT transmission. While being extremely efficient, the experience of driving it is absolutely horrid. Whenever any significant throttle is given, the engine RPMs shoot up with little acceleration of the car. This feels similar to having a clutch slipping so badly the car will not make it around the block. I had the opportunity of driving a new Accord with a CVT transmission two years ago. While not quite as extreme, it exhibited the same abominable behavior. I would stud the tires on my old Yamaha FJ1200, and commute on that bike through blizzards before I would defile my garage with another one of these CVT abominations."

Karl T., MN (2002 Honda Civic HX 1.7-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission leaks

"Had radiator leak - plastic radiator cracked and let coolant flow out when pressurized. Found out from research that these Honda Civics are know to overheat and a lot of times will blow the head gaskets. Multiple mechanics told me this"
