The redesigned 2006 Civic is a major improvement over the previous generation, and is now CR's top-rated small sedan. Handling is responsive and secure, and the ride is steady and compliant. Road noise is pronounced. The 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine is refined, works well with the smooth five-speed automatic, and returned 28 mpg. The hybrid model returned 37 mpg overall. Instruments are uniquely arranged into two tiers, with a high-mounted digital speedometer. The interior has generous storage space. Standard safety equipment includes ABS and curtain air bags. Crash-test results are impressive. An ultra-clean emissions natural gas version, the GX, is available in New York and California.
