Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"My last Honda had over 212000 miles on it when I traded it in. The paint was in good condition. The paint on the 2008 has been problematic from the start"

Anonymous, MD (2008 Honda Civic)

"There is a recognized problem with the paint in my model year. Honda extended the warranty for this to 7 years, but did not inform me (I understand that no one was notified unless they complained about the paint). The problem started on my car in 2017, after the extended warranty period. I asked Honda to rectify the problem, since they had not notified me of the potential problem (so I could have done something about it). They refused."

Gregory G., CA (2008 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Fading paint and flaking clear coat. The car was recalled a few years ago due to paint issues. They contracted with an auto body company to repaint the hood and top. The car took 3 weeks to be completed with no rental car provided for their shoddy paint. Honda no longer stands behind the workmanship and quality of their products as they used to. I will NEVER purchase, rent or lease a Honda product again. Customer service at the dealership and on the phone was terrible."

Patrick G., CA (2008 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"CAR LOOKS HORRIBLE! The body is in very good shape, but the paint has peeled off! Honda said I missed the recall so they won't fix it. (I never received notice of a paint recall)"

"About two years ago the paint on the roof started fading and chipping off . With two distinct lines running from the front of the roof to the back . Which at a distance is starting to look like two racing stripes on the roof . In addition there are two different spots on the trunk lid doing the same sort of fading and chipping. Evidently a poor paint job at the factory."

I see dozens of Civics in my area with *exactly* the same issue (same peeling on the front and back of the roof), yet Honda refuses to acknowledge this is a problem with the paint. It's so bad that a local body shop says a repaint would cost more than the value of the car. Honda' refusal to deal with the problem *will* influence my next purchase decision."

"The paint is chalking, fading on the vehicle’s trunk. When I took in the vehicle several years ago to be repainted—as part of a vehicle recall—the inspection team at Auto Nation said the trunk was fine and wouldn’t need to be painted. They did paint the entire hood and top of the vehicle. I should have insisted that Honda also painted the trunk’s cover. In addition, the chalking and cracking of the paint is visible on the top frame of the vehicle, between the roof and the window frame. But after 10 years of being in the hot Arizona sun, perhaps some fading is to be expected."

Refrigerant leaks

"During highway travel the A/C air flow would gradually decrease after about an hour. Interior cooling was satisfactory at other times. Honda dealer technician found no leaks. After adding 1 lb. of refrigerant A/C pressures were normal and cooling satisfactory. Apparently evaporator was freezing up due to low refrigerant and limiting airflow. I have not previously experienced this seemingly contradictory situation"

"I had fairly new brakes according to the previous owner, but I was having very slow stopping. I asked my mechanic to check them twice but they insisted they were fine but told me I had a transmission leak. Because I couldn't afford the transmission leak repair, I cancelled a long holiday road trip and drove only on local roads. A few days later I was going down a hill and moved to the left turning lane but the car was not slowing well. I stood on my brakes, The light changed to yellow and I started blasting my horn. The miracle was that all other 8 lanes of traffic stopped and waited as I slowly rolled into the intersection and made a u-turn back to my mechanic. THEN they checked the master brake. They repaired it but I am now looking for a new mechanic."

One mechanic said the electrical board had never been installed properly and was damaged from 'bouncing around' in the dashboard.
