The Honda Civic is refined and economical, with fairly nimble handling and a relatively comfortable ride. The aerodynamic styling of the Civic looks futuristic, but sacrifices ease of access. Pronounced road noise remains a complaint. Stability control is standard only on the EX-L, Hybrid, and Si models.

"Sun deteriated rubber gaskets around glass and moldings"

Anonymous, HI (2009 Honda Civic Si 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The car is extremely low, so you hit the bumper and scratch or pull off the bumper when parking. Car needs to be a little higher to make it easier for parking"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Actuall the problem was with the rear bumper which your available choices did not cover. The bumper clips into an adjoining panel and the bumper came loose from that panel"

Kevin W., FL (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Front bumper pulled out after contacting concrete wheel stop due to low body, when parking."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"molding has come loose in a few areas and required glue to reattach."

Anonymous, AR (2009 Honda Civic)

"The molding around the side, front and rear windows has deteriorated. I replaced the molding on the drivers and passages windows by ordering parts and following a YouTube video, but was unable to figure out how to replace the molding around the front and rear window. This gives the car a very unappealing look and is embarrassing."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Honda Civic)

"Trim coming loose and the wind ripping it off. Rubber molding and seals all rotting and falling to pieces, on the whole car."

Glen W., NV (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Rubber/vinyl strip running from base of windshield running to the back window on both the left and right side released just on each side of the windshield making noise as they deteriorated and then releasing."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The trim that surrounds the entire front windshield, doors and rear window has become so brittle that it has broken away and the molding on the front windshield was lost while driving on the highway. The cost to replace will be more than $500 at the dealers so will not replace this cosmetic issue."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Honda Civic)

"The sunvisor plastic is cracking and makes the visor unusable because when you pull it down, it is hard to return to normal position. The exterior rubber trim around windows is alsl cracking and is a problem I have had with a previous Honda."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Defective sun visor"

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Honda Civic Si 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"visor failure"

Robert W., AZ (2009 Honda Civic Si 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"All the interior key trim owrk like the steering wheel cover and front interoir trim is decaying away. When you drive this car, you have decaying sticky rubber residue on your hands from the steering wheel each time you drive this car. Trim inside is cracking and dry rotting away. The exteroir mirrors have a seal / design defect and creates a paint stain on the car side panels and doors and leeds to look like prime and a rust out.. With the poor external and interior quality of this car, the resale value is so low and shows so poorly we are stuck to keep it instead of trading up for a new model. This is a DO NOT BUY CIVIC brand for buyers. We have just 30,025 miles on it. After 20 yeas of this brand, it continues to fall below average in so many areas."

Stephen H., VA (2009 Honda Civic DX-VP 1.8-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Recently all over the car, the paint has faded or chalked, and is very spotted finish. It doesn't seem to be caused by anything we did to the car and we consider it a paint defect. It continues to get worse and can't be cleaned up. We are considering having to paint it as it has become an eyesore. None of our other cars ever had this problem before, even older ones"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Car suffered from common problem on black civics of the clear coat delaminating. Honda extended warranty but even though I contacted and case file opened prior to expiry date and being told that there was no expiry now that claim was filed they failed to pay half of cost because I brought it in after original expiry date. Dealer stepped up and covered"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Clear coat is peeling off. When I called the dealer they said I was at fault...too many washes. When I called again a year later, they said that there was in fact a Honda problem, but that I had just missed the warranty extension. (No notification) I appealed to Honda America and they refused to make an exception to the warranty extension dates, saying it was due to high mileage. Terrible service"

Anonymous, ON (2009 Honda Civic)

"The air bag was a recall issue. The repair was provided through the recall. The sun visors repeatedly break. Although this was a manufacturer defect, our local delearship refused to replace them after the second break. Replacement visors were about $125. The paint was a solid, non-metallic black which faded and wore off in several places, especially the roof and trunk. The roof is down to primer now. I have a friend with a Civic who had the same problem with paint. Our local dealership provided poor service so we moved our routine services (oil changes, etc.) to a non-dealer business. Due to the poor service of the Honda delearship and issues with paint, we will not purchase another Honda."

Helen G., AZ (2009 Honda Civic)

"Grey paint is fading and chalking."

William H., NJ (2009 Honda Civic)

"THIS MAY BE THE VERY THING THAT KEEPS ME FROM PURCHASING ANOTHER CIVIC. There were up to six significant spots where the paint faded all the way to the metal. We were told that Honda recalled them for this reason but we never received the recall. When we saw the problem and inquired about we were told that we missed the deadline on getting it repaired. So my wife took her own personal hard earned money to get roof repainted. I THINK IT WAS POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ON HONDA'S PART TO REFUSE TO PICK UP THE COST. MY WIFE WAS ACTUALLY TRYING TO PROTECT HONDA'S REPUTATION BY NOT DRIVING THE CAR IN THIS POOR CONDITION. VERY SAD. VERY MAD."

"the exterior paint has degraded so mush that the car looks terrible and is embarrassing to be seen in. I contact the local Honda dealer and they were not responsive. I did have the roof repainted because of a recall for paint, but right after that was completed the fenders, trunk and side panels began to peal. This is it for me and Honda."

"Paint has faded and black rubber trim is chalky and brittle"

Laurel K., CA (2009 Honda Civic)

"Pain / clear coat peeling in the extreme on roof and hood. About 15 square feet in total. Dealer was of no assistance because I was not original owner. It was very evident they were not invested in my satisfaction or even approaching Honda Canada on this issue when it is a known problem on the gun metal gray paint."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda Civic 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Based on my research, this was a defect in 2009 Civics in particular colors. The paint was cracking, particularly on the hood and roof of the vehicle. Honda had extended the warranty, but I didn't have the repairs done in time - however, Honda worked with me, and paid 80% of the repainting cost despite this. I am a loyal Honda customer forever!"

Mary H., MO (2009 Honda Civic)

"Various recalls over the first few years to repaint only sections of the paint that was healing and turning white in spaces. Honda would not paint the entire car. We had to take it back to different times for rental car etc for them to paint one section at a time. Now the warranty is no longer, being honored, no recall on any paint. Parts of the car that were not painted are still fading shipping turning white and looking like doodoo. Very bad warranty recall customer service, angry"

Kevin G., FL (2009 Honda Civic DX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The paint on both mirrors is pealing and has been for a few years. The paint on the rest of the car is fine."

Russell M., FL (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Maybe because I drive my car a lot. The clear coat started coming off after 4 years owning this car. It came off on all the areas where the air contacts the car and flows over it while driving: the hood above the lights, the front part of the roof, the back part of the roof and the trunk. It looks terrible. It continues to worsen. I am almost down to the bare metal now."

Carmen F., TN (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Honda sent a recall for chalking. The recall expired before I had the problem of chalking. Honda said they would not fix it because the warranty was only good for a year."

E M., PA (2009 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The warranty on the paint was extended to 7 years and when I realized I had a problem I was over that by 31 days. Went to dealer and contacted Honda rep. to no avail. Now the paint job is such a mess that I would probably not buy another Honda. The interior is spotless and the car was always washed and waxed. With so little mileage I was planning on keeping it for a while longer. Not so sure now."

"Turns out it was covered by a recall but they didn't notify people about it. I was buying touch up paint at the dealer, and thankfully the clerk/worker in the parts dept mentioned that our car might be covered by the recall. So it was, and repainted at the cost of the dealer."

Laura B., ME (2009 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"A few years back Honda had paid for painting certain areas of the car they said had failed. Now the rest of the car's paint is failing resulting in a very lousy looking finish. Honda has yet to admit this is the same issue they corrected with the rest of the factory paint."

Honda did have silent recall for multiple models of Hondas with paint delamination issues but was very limited (only certain areas covered) and not publicized (I found out about it too late). "The 2009 civic was completely painted with poor and defective processes. All the paint on the hood, roof, spoiler, and trunk are rusting away. Paint other areas are pull away for finish exterior. Some are rusting thru the primer coat and others are in rust mode. I see this in all the 2009 and 10 civics on the road. My Brown Honda dealer Honda offers $600 credit on a $3000 paint job from their body. Terrible defect and consumer burden. Never got a recall leter from the Brown Honda Dealer or Honda Corp. USA. A/C compressor
