The Civic, long one of our top-scoring small cars, slipped substantially with this redesign. Blame sits with so-so interior quality, a choppy ride and more pronounced road noise. Vague steering robs the Civic of its fun-to-drive feel. On the up side, the Civic provides decent rear-seat room and great fuel economy.

"Actually it is just road noise. It is just very noisy in the car while driving."

Anonymous, AR (2012 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Civic and ALL Hondas have an inordinate amount of wind and road noise !!!! I keep bringing this up to Honda dealers and they keep denying it!! The ride is not poor but it not as good as other cars in its class. Soundproofing is poor for an otherwise great vehicle. CS needs to MEASURE THIS SCIENTIFICALLY in its road tests so that Honda can no longer deny the problem!!!!!"

Thomas H., NC (2012 Honda Civic HF 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"A constant problem in the 3 Hondas I have owned. At high speeds a combination of road noise and wind noise make it impossible to carry on a normal conversation and/or hear the radio without upping the volume. It is annoying, but not to the point of buying a quieter car because that one is usually too huge, too hard on gas, too large for my petite body."

Slipping transmission

"Had to change transmission fluid far before recommended miles as indicated in the Severe Operating Maintenance Schedule. Problem solved, no further transmission issues."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Honda Civic LX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"The Honda Civic 2012 started being sluggish & having trouble accelerating up hills about 10 months after I owned it. The problems started Spring of 2016 and I'd been driving it without those problems since June of 2015 (including 2 multi-state trips with lots of hilly roads & different drive speeds). I know the car is handling differently, but I don't claim to know what the issue actually is. I thought maybe transmission. I've taken it in multiple times & nothing has been found. I paid to have the transmission fluid replaced & it made no difference (I generally do the routine maintenance items on my cars, so it was time for that anyway). It also started revving in an odd way when going down slight hills at a slow speed around the time of the acceleration issue. So, perhaps it's part of the stability control/ traction control. But, I turned off traction control & had the same issue (no improvement). Going down hill, the engine acts similarly to when the car is on cruise control in hilly areas & accelerates more than it needs to if I'd left off cruise (because it's slowing down the hill; if I weren't on cruise, I would have picked up speed coasting down & begin accelerating before the incline & it would have handled more smoothly). It only does the revving downhill when I'm not accelerating but using the break (it's not revving that would actually take the car anywhere fast, just something is going on with the motor that doesn't need to & didn't the 1st 10 months). I encounter issues on my drive to & from work regularly. It's the same drive I took the 1st 10 months I owned the care, that's how I know this is a change. I've gone in for servicing on this issue 6 times and 'unable to repeat' is all I got. The last time when I complained the actual mechanic said he could do a ride along with me. I will take them up on that, but I was so annoyed about time lost over that car this year, I haven't yet. I don't know if this would have anything to do with the electrical system concerns, but I don't thinks so. Generally, I have no issue when I don't have to stop on hills, but if I get a stop light on a hill or cars slow, then the engine doesn't really kick in as it usually does/should (uphill) or revs for no reason (downhill). Gas mileage was not effected and it's not that I'm expecting a 4 cylinder to act like a 6 cylinder. My 2008 Honda Civic had great acceleration & this 2012 is fine on flat surfaces or if I have speed on the hills (and was fine in every circumstance for the 1st 10 months)."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Honda Civic EX 1.8-L 4 Cyl)

"Civic wouldn't start 2/5/2018. Towed for battery replacement b/c of 'bad cell.' It had been sluggish, grinding 2 start for 2 days after being stuck in traffic with the lights on. Similar in 2016 when battery was replaced 5/16 after 2nd call for towing. The 1st time in 2016, it started again after sitting for 4 hours. Both times it would be sluggish to turn over after long trips (daylight no lights). AAA found battery in good shape but low charge Aug 2016 recommending alternator & cables be checked (as had been recommendation prior to 2016 battery 'bad cell' & replacement). Dealer ran test & found electrical to be fine. In 2018 Feb the Customer Care person told me the car needed to be started every few days or the battery would die. It died after being parked from Friday night to Monday morning. That was ridiculous 'advice.' I feel like I cannot trust this car to start or the Honda Dealer to look into what is really wrong. I feel trapped into going to the Honda Dealer for repairs because I bought a Honda warranty good through 2020. I've had it to the Dealer multiple times asking for them to look into a change in the way it drives up & down hills that started 10 months into owning the car. They can't find anything and have not taken me seriously (I've told them I was unhappy). I've also had 3 different Tire Pressure Monitor warning lights fail & be replaced (tire pressure has been fine). The 2 dead batteries with the electrical issues prior are really the only thing that has left me without a car though (stranded & having to call a tow truck all 3 times, though the first the tow truck had issues & the car restarted, the dealer didn't find anything the next day & a month later I had to be towed to get the battery replaced). I paid more for less car with the 2012 Civic to get what I trusted as a reliable Honda. I had a 2008 Honda Civic for 7 years until it was totaled & loved it; I bought it based on Consumer Reports ratings; I should have paid attention to the CR ratings which did not rate the Honda Civic 2012 well; I thought I could deal with a noisy car & uncomfortable seats for a reliable engine, but now I really don't like anything about the car or the dealership, but the electrical/2 dead batteries in less than 24 months have been the only issues that have left me stranded (and feeling the cause for the car not starting those times hasn't really been identified)."
