Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Honda Civic owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"The entertainment unit was replaced twice under warranty. OK now. Related to Android Auto both times. Not confident it was a Honda fault, may have been Google."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"It took a SW, FW and 2 new units to resolve the AA problems, all under warranty."

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Civic LX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The Android Auto seems to lead to the screen freezing or making the radio malfunction. The radio becomes impossible to turn off and must be rebooted. The Android Auto works through my Galaxy Smartphone, but sometimes the car won't even recognize my phone."

Phil W., WI (2016 Honda Civic)
Apple CarPlay

"The system takes on a life of its own. Applications open and close for a period of time without me having touched the screen. It happens at random. While this is happening it has a persistent beeping noise."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Appleplay would not work and nobody could fix it, then it resolved itself. But the has happened several times and I expect it to come back!"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Problem started early 2020. Brought it to the dealer.Something was reset on computer. No problem since."

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Apple CarPlay would either not recognize my iPhone or would cause the display to be blank and frozen. It apparently was an issue with the entertainment head unit as Honda replaced this under warranty. It did occur again later on and Honda then updated the hear unit software which has now solved the problem."

Ed R., AB (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"The display on the BU camera became progressively blurry. It was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When initially turning on the car, if you immediately switch into reverse, the backup camera will show an image that is slow. So if you backup, you will see an image from a few seconds before and it will suddenly speed up to catch up. This is very disorienting and can be dangerous because you aren't actually seeing what is currently behind you."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Front bumper too low to ground, bumped a curb requiring the sensors to be readjusted"

Michael S., CO (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"cameras quit working and after several hours to few days they start again for no apparent reason"

Norman B., ON (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Infotainment screen will beep and beep when screen is dirty with figure prints. The sensitively should be turned down to avoid this situation"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Screen would display Honda logo when using right turn signaal or backing up or would be blank sometimes"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Left Lane Camera is blurry, and its not dirty"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen difficult to see

"the different modes I select take too long to appear on the screen I am sometimes surprised w/screens that pop up unexpectedly Service people at the dealership have not been very helpful or are not WELL INFORMED!!!!!"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Depending on the position of exterior light [sunlight] the screen becomes hard to read. Another disturbing fact: The rear window on this car reflects the rear deck of the car making you wonder what is behind you -- also, no rear wiper!"

John W., IL (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The screen interface is difficult to use and requires to many clicks to navigate through the features"

Joshua W., MN (2016 Honda Civic LX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"This is tied to the GPS question."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Honda Civic Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The back-up camera picture stayed on the screen even after shifting into drive. Then the screen might go blank and stay that way. The dealer took pictures of the problem and kept the car for a few days. The problem went away and didn't recur so they did nothing. There was no software issue."

Steven M., OH (2016 Honda Civic EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"the car is the TOURING model with Honda sensing. Occasionally the system makes BEEPING sounds for no apparent reasons. I have discussed this with our dealer & Honda Corp and received NO GOOD explanations. So we don't pay attention to it unfortuantely."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"freezes is not really correct. The display console exhibited various weird problems, such as occasionally displaying the view of the camera monitoring the white lines on the road for the lane departure, or continuing to display the backup camera after shifting into Drive and driving forward. The display console was finally replaced by the dealer, which seems to have solved the problem."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The infotainment system is an embedded android tablet-like system that controls music/radio, navigation, android auto/apple carplay connections, climate controls, backup and lane-watch cameras and configuration of some of the car's functions. It chronically intermittently fails to function. - The backup camera sometimes fails to activate, sometimes the video feed of the backup camera stutters or stops. When it does function, the backup camera is slow (1-3 seconds) to turn on, leading to an awkward delay in the middle of 3-point turns while I wait for the camera to turn on (either that or I just don't use it). - Sometimes the console is extremely slow to turn on when starting the car, with the system being unresponsive to pressing any buttons and eventually an android system popup is displayed that says a program is running slow with an option to terminate the program. When this happens, the music eventually begins to play as it left off when the car was last operated, and because the system is unresponsive or extremely slow (20+ seconds) to respond to button presses, it is impossible to silence or turn down the volume of the playing music. - Rarely, the music stutters. All of these problems seem to be worse if I have a large USB drive containing 100+gb music attached. The music search-by-voice has never functioned, making it is virtually impossible to select a particular artist, album or song. - The lane-watch system takes 1-3 seconds to activate after the button is pressed, leading to it either activating after I already changed lanes or an awkward wait on my part as I'm driving before I perform my lane change. - There have been several times when the unresponsive screen has extended over to areas of the instrument cluster: the area useful information where you can switch between items (music, economy, directions, SMS/email, etc) becomes unresponsive. - During a system reset, the screen has gone completely blank and displayed bizarre colors for several days before going back to normal. A Honda service bulletin was posted for this model car and many of these problems, which involved a software/firmware update that was supposed to improve things. I had this update installed on my vehicle, and continued to have the above mentioned problems with no observable change in frequency."

Matthew W., MA (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Screen didn't actually freeze. However, it was totally useless b/c didn't complete actions I pressed on the screen. First time this happened Honda dealer patched the software, Second time they replaced the screen."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Civic EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"If you see my prior comments on Apple CarPlay they describe the problem & solution."

Ed R., AB (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen beeps uncontrollably changes display mode in random episodes. It can work for days without a problem, then be impossible to control (not freezing exactly, but effectively unusable) for periods of hours."

Richard K., CA (2016 Honda Civic EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The infotainment touchscreen tends to freeze up and does not respond to touch input. The power button for the infotainment screen is also part of the touchscreen which makes rebooting the infotainment display almost impossible when operating the vehicle. One has to pull over and park the vehicle; then power off the vehicle, and restart the vehicle in hopes of rebooting the infotainment screen. This happens maybe 3x a year on average. What makes it especially bothersome is that the interior climate controls are also part of the infotainment console and one is unable to adjust the climate control settings as the buttons are also part of the touchscreen."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Just stops working and we have to manually reboot"

Fabrice W., OR (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"screen actually starts acting as if touchpad was being touched every 1/10 of a second. extremely annoying."

Anonymous, VT (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The preset buttons on the screen will say 'no information available' after selecting a channel. Sometimes the presets will appear after about 10 seconds and other times it just stays on 'no information available'. Also sometimes selecting one channel preset and then trying to change the channel to the next preset, either from the head unit, or the steering wheel, will not change channels and just keeps defaulting back to the same preset channel. The entire head unit was already replaced with a new OEM Honda one last year under warranty because of similiar touch issues and freezing screen."

Jason D., CO (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

D G., NJ (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Had many issues with screen, freezing, noises, blinking on off, etc"

Alfred S., NJ (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The display screen would display only a scrolling circle and none of the instrument or radio functions and smart phone would not pair"

Ed R., AB (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"When I'm listening to my music, whether radio or USB, the screen will often beep, then return to the main (non-audio) menu. When this happens, it will do it every few seconds/minutes. Turning the audio off, then back on, will reset the menu, and it will stop doing it -- until the next time I turn on the car"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Honda Civic EX)

"The screen would freeze upon starting the car. This was a serious issue because the radio, and climate control are controlled solely through this screen. You had to turn off your car and start it again to fix the issue"

Ryan F., ON (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I use an Android 5.x Nexus phone . This phone will interface with the car. But periodically drops the pairing. It's not the phone it's the car. I use my phone as my primary source of music that is recorded. Android auto also operates on this car with great difficulty. The app freezes the navigation freezes the radio freezes. Seems like this app is really not compatible with this car.Not only dose it freeze up but it goes wacky sometimes. View the video here https://youtu.be/hhK4tM1SMBI"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Whatever's on the screen such as a back up camera just stays on the screen regardless of other changes. In the case of the back up camera, the back up camera has been on while driving forward"

Mark W., CA (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Screen would lock up and couldn't turn radio off. Also would change sources on its own"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Honda Civic EX-T 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Recently, while traveling back to college, I started my car after stopping at a rest stop, and the gauges would not function. The cluster was black, and the tire light was on. Restarted it twice--did the same thing. Eventually, I opened the door, and started the car one more time. Everything worked normally"

Humphrey U., TN (2016 Honda Civic LX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen would randomly display the Honda logo when backing up or when right signal turned on. Music on USB memory would freeze (stop) randomly. books would only play part way through. GPS would show car in empty field when on freeway"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Infotainment system froze and made clicking sounds on a regular basis. Fixed after second return to dealer. Subwoofer rattled and buzzed at low volumes. Dealer installed additional supports to my tighten the problem"

"The audio on off touch area does not respond. Cannot turn the radio on right now. Seems to be a sometimes problem"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Honda Civic EX-L 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen goes blank

"The screen frequently blinked and went dark. The dealer was unable to fix the problem with a software update. I had to visit the shop three times. In the end, they changed the full set. I learned, offhand from one of the servicemen, that Honda issued a bulletin addressing several issues with the infotainment system. Not happy with the succession of events. I didn't feel that Honda, through the dealership, was trying to help."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Honda Civic EX 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Every once in a while the screen will go black and unresponsive. This can be frustrating as the climate controls are almost completely reliant on the screen working so when this happens, you are almost stuck with the Current radio settings, climate control settings/status, among other important things."

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Civic Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It started during a trip with flickering off then resolving itself. Then a few days later it flicked off and the car would not start. Then it displayed limited items, started and was taken to shop for repair. Said it was a software issue."

Speakers

"There was an extremely annoying rattle coming from the rear deck lid where the subwoofer is. I believe the subwoofer only comes with the touring model's surround sound system and I have seen others having this issue as well. I originally stuffed cardboard between the subwoofer and the third brake light and it was a temporary fix, but I would still have a constant rattle. It isn't the end of the world, but it basically ruined the otherwise great experience the Touring model's sound system offers. I asked the dealer about it and they said they had other customers come to them with the same issue so they had put some foam insulation in which fixed the issue and they did it for free too which was greatly appreciated."

"Last year the AC stopped working. All the refrigerant had leaked out. The dealer could not find the leak. They charged me over $300 to recharge system--new refrigerant is very costly apparently--and put a dye in it to find the leak. Of course it all leaked out again. Compressor was bad. They said Honda will cover the condenser but not compressor because they keep breaking. Nonetheless they paid half of this appx $1400 repair. A few months later the condenser went which they covered, and the evaporator at the same time, which I had to pay almost $1500. So on a 4 yr old car all three major components of the AC failed. The dealer and the American Honda rep I spoke with acknowledged the problem and said maybe in the future Honda will reimburse. Still waiting."

"My Civic was less than 3 years old, when the A/C completely failed. The dealer told me a first that my condenser was leaking, a $800 repair. After they replaced that and the A/C was still not working, they then told me that the compressor is bad as well. I was told that probably the leaking condenser caused the compressor to fail as well. Since my Civic had more than 36,000 miles on the odometer, the repair was not covered under warranty (even though the vehicle was less than 3 years old). The total repair cost was more than $2,000.00. I filed a complaint, called Honda corporate, told them that I will blast this all over social media, and eventually they agreed to only charge me some $400 (to cover the parts). All in all, my car was in the shop for 2 full days. I will never buy a Honda again! "I was told that the refrigerant leak caused the issues with the condenser and compressor. But I never hit anything with the vehicle, the car is parked in my garage and only I drive it, to and from work. There is no way that the leak was caused by me hitting anything. There was also no physical evidence of any impact, just a leaking connenction."

"Purchased used Civic from local Honda dealer. Mentioned that the brakes sounded bad, but saleman said rotors were probably rusty from sitting on the lot. After purchase, I took the car to a trusted brake mechanic who reported the rotors and calipers were severly rusted and required replacement probably due to sitting for a very long time. After replacement have not had any problems."

Anonymous, IN (2016 Honda Civic LX Unsure)

"Bought the No-Warranty used Honda Civic from the Honda dealer. I noticed that the brakes made a bad sound when stopping from speeds over 40 mph. The dealer said it was probably because the car had been sitting on the lot. After the purchase the noise didn't go away like most brakes noises do from just sitting for a while. So I took it to a brake mechanic. The rotors were rusted very bad and the pads were bad too. I had to replace all 4 rotors and pads."

"I am on my third set of rear rotors. After 16 months on the road initially, rear rotors did not pass safety inspection. Pads fine, front fine. Honda admitting issues, but not until after I pay for service, honda refunds me with gift card for honda. 10K miles later, rear rotors bad again, they turn them, for free this time. Front pads and rotos still the original, rear pads still the original. 10K miles later they are bad again. This time dealership replaces them with 3rd porty non-honda rotors, they replaced pads at this time also. So far the latest ones have gone 17K mile and looking okay, still much worse looking than front, but at least not grooved to waste. So whatever honda designed for these rear brakes are not good, i have not seen many notes about it out there, so perhaps I have only been unlucky. Overall the cost has not been bad due to dealership eating most of it, honda has been notified of all the issues, but not take any real interest. Hondas lack of interrest is 60% of the reason I probably will never get a Honda vehicle again"

Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

When this happened on the highway, it led to us constantly having to force it back and forth to make slight adjustments just to stay in the lane. This started occurring only on the highway after the car had been on for a while, but eventually it started happening just minutes after turning the car on. The dealership said they couldn't recreate it for the first year we noticed it, until it got so bad it was impossible to not notice. By this point we had read tens of reviews about this same problem where the owners needed to replace the entire rack and pinion and steering column. This was the case for us as well."
