This version of the Honda CR-V ranked near the top of the small-SUV category during its time. The rear seat is roomy, the interior is flexible, and handling is improved. Simple controls, a steady ride, and a smooth, responsive powertrain are strengths, but the sleek styling has a negative effect on visibility and cargo space.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Acceleration is only adequate. Seats are very comfortable, and steering is responsive."

MIKE A., IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"As a 7 year old car with close to 100k miles on it, the car has decidedly less pickup than it had when it was newer."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Does not have enough acceleration"

Anonymous, NC (2009 Honda CR-V)

"mileage is my only complaint"

ISABEL C., RI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"do not get tired"

ARTHUR L., SC (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Handles well, reliable, flexible interior configuration for hauling large items"

MELISSA A., WA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The truck has a very nice, smooth, quiet ride with good steering responsiveness. My only knock is the lack of a 6 cylinder option and the 16 mpg fuel economy. Also, the lower body parts art\e a bit cheap looking and awkward."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Bumpy ride-not smooth. Would like a longer wheel axle or better shocks"

KIMBERLY O., WI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Vehicle is somewhat underpowered. This shows up especially on hills."

BRYAN D., NS (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Handling is a little sluggish -- consistent with any SUV. Acceleration is good."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"It lacks power and has to much road noise."

KEITH S., LA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Acceleration is a bit lacking."

Anonymous, CO (2009 Honda CR-V)

"May be unfair to compare an SUV with a sedan for acceleration and handling. Also, I may have been more satisfied with a V6 engine, as in an Acura SUV. I really put the CR-V to the test driving it over mountains out west in Colorado and New Mexico. It just couldn't manage the steep grades. Torque wasn't there. Trade off was good handling in snow. Also, I wanted more agility, responded too sluggishly for me."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Honda CR-V)

"It handles very well in rainy weather, and braking system is excellent- most people who drive this vehicle tell me the brakes are "touchy", I say their brakes are too soft. Steering is excellent and handles well in bad weather- I have not driven this vehicle in the snow/ice."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very satisfied"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Our CR-V has provided me the most fun I've had with a car. It is so responsive and the breaks are so smooth. Amazing SUV - feels and handles like a Honda car!"

Anonymous, MN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Not good acceleration when trying to merge"

Anonymous, CO (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Accelerates too slowly."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Small engine certainly adequate for city driving but freeway ramps are a challenge. Steering and braking are super sensitive."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Acceleration is poor."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Good handling, reliable and dependable"

Anonymous, NJ (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Acceleration from start is adequate, could be better at passing speed but the car is very solid and maneuverable on the road."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Another great quality Honda product but you don't buy the car for the excitement. It's very practical and gets you from point A to point B."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Handling is great; sometimes acceleration is slow"

Anonymous, AL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Drives great but could have more acceleration."

Tim L., TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"ROad noise"

Anonymous, IN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"All wheel drive is a great feature in the rain and snow. Acceleration is good. Mileage improves dramatically during freeway driving to almost 20 mpg."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"It has great pickup on the freeway but I feel the handling is lose, even after the alignment has been adjusted."

James E., VA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Acceleration is adequate, although the engine is noisy when urged to go. The transmission shifts smoothly. The car takes most pavement irregularities fairly well. I am impressed by the punishment the car will take. We drive it over 3,000 miles a year when it is very heavily loaded. It stands up to the load and still drives well."

George H., MN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"good acceleration and great stopping ability"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"best car i've ever owned for handling in the rain. does excellent job."

Kevin K., NC (2009 Honda CR-V)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Way too noisey!"

Anonymous, TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"very noisy"

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Solid comfortable vehicle, great for long trips."

D W., IN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Although it is a comfortable car, there is quite a bit of road noise."

Anonymous, NH (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Road noise is louder than I would like."

E A., MN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Seats on the 2009 CR-V are very comfortable. Climate control is excellent, but unfortunately, had to replace the AC compressor (under warranty, still waiting for Honda to reimburse me). Quiet on the highway. Comfort is not as outstanding as my 2016 Accord, but may be unfair to compare a sedan with an SUV."

Anonymous, OH (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Lower back support is only fair. I use a lumbar support"

RICHARD A., MD (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Gotten compressor replaced as part of recall and AC has never worked properly since despite repeat visits to dealer for correction"

MICHAEL W., GA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Car is noisy and under powered. Overall we are very satisfied with the car"

Anonymous, PA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Bumpy ride-feel every bump in the road. The armrest had to be replaced because my "skin moisture or lotions" deteriated the surface. No other car I have ever had with leather seats have"

KIMBERLY O., WI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very uncomfortable ride. Especially in the passenger seat. We have had it back to Honda, tried different tires to no avail. In this area it is just badly designed."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The ride is a bit noisy -- road noise, etc."

Anonymous, VA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Padding on the seats is improvable. Ride seems a little stiff for a small car."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"cloth interior becomes easily stained, dirty, etc. not as comfortable as leather."

RONALD W., MA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very stiff ride. Interior road noise is excessive."

KURT M., IN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"We had a 2001 CRV before this one. The seats on the 2001 were much more comfortable than the seats on the 2009. Also the 2009 came with a 50 mile/50 MPH donut spare tire instead of a real tire and the 4 tires on the rims had to be replaced at 15500 miles."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The leather seats in the CRV are not as comfortable as the fabric seats in the odyssey."

SHIRLEY H., MI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very noisy on the highway. Hard to see out the back"

Anonymous, CO (2009 Honda CR-V)

"I feel the seats are not comfortable and I use a cushion at all times when driving."

LINDA T., WI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The driver seat level is easy for my wife to get into the car. Neither climbing up to get in or climbing up to get out."

Anonymous, NC (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very noisy when driving. When using I-pod it doesn't charge. No blutooth"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"A/c has problems in design not a well made car"

JOEL N., IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

SUE C., CO (2009 Honda CR-V)

"somewhat noisy - particularly at freeway speeds"

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda CR-V)

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very bad interior noise Bumpy Ride"

MICKEY S., CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Interior road noise is very annoying. The seats could also be improved. My spouse finds the leg support, especially inadequate."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda CR-V)

Anonymous, AK (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Some road noise. Fabric on seats stain easily."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The road noise is a little more than I would like."

Anonymous, OR (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Not a smooth ride and has a noisy undercarriage when taking bumps."

SHARON B., NJ (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very noisy inside and rides poorly. The shelf in cargo compartment is very awkward to get on and off and the back seats are a pain to fold down."

DAVID S., SK (2009 Honda CR-V)

"head rest are angled so that they are very uncomfortable and require some modification just to drive any distance. worst of any car we have driven."

Anonymous, AL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"front seating is tight for a 6 foot tall man; ride noise is more than average for SUV; handles well; accelerates well."

MICHAEL S., TN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Both knees hit hard surfaces on both sides making the car extremely uncomfortable."

Anonymous, TN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"My CRV is very reliable and drives well in bad weather."

Anonymous, RI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The seat deck could be a little deeper. Also, the air conditioner could cool a little better. There is a recall on the air bags because the plastic part shatters on impact."

BERNICE Z., TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The CRV gets very good gas mileage but is a little tight for me (I am 6'04" tall so leg/knee room is right."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Rough ride, much road noise. Seats are just a bit short in the actual seat... Cuts me off mid thigh, therefore does not support mid thigh to knee."

Anonymous, AL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"It took me three times of going to Honda for them to fix the AC. First two times, they claimed there was no problem. Yet the AC kept blowing hot air."

Anonymous, HI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Too much noise front engine in vehicle. Disappointed ac compressor went out."

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The heated seat feature failed. The comfort of the ride is not very good."

CAROL W., CO (2009 Honda CR-V)

JAMES V., CO (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Seats are very uncomfortable and there is a lot of road noise."

DANIEL D., PA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Drivers seat is comfortable and the upper and lower seat is adjustable but the passenger seat only reclines and adjust for leg room. The lower part of the seat is uncomfortable after a short time because there is no leg relief because it is not adjustable. ( does not lower the back of the lower seat to provide a more comfortable position"

GARY A., MI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"the seats become uncomfortable on long trips - driving more than 5 hours"

Anonymous, IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The heat seats do not heat well, especially in the passenger side. The seats in the back are not very comfortable."

KAREN P., OH (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Heated leather seats - very good for my back. This has been a great car. The air bag problem took too long for Honda to correct - but they have taken action which I hope will protect me. My Honda Fit airbags kept me alive with my last car."

RICHARD W., NJ (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very thin seats. Not very supportive. Uncomfortable especially on long drives."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Interior noise is too high."

Anonymous, GA (2009 Honda CR-V)

What Owners Say

"Great SUV, Very dependable."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Bought this car used. Extremely reliable. Small SUVs are great cars for older people since you slide right into the seat and don't have to get down. Also, highly practical. Can live with low mileage and mediocre ride. This is the reliable Reincarnation of my '72 SAAB wagon."

RICHARD A., MD (2009 Honda CR-V)

"These cars are equal or better than their competitors (Toyota RAV-4, Subaru Forester) but are significantly cheaper, making them a great value."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"This vehicle is a limited edition and did not even come with auto headlights or a passenger powered seat."

VICTOR C., NH (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Holds resale value very well. Extremely reliable"

EDWARD C., MO (2009 Honda CR-V)

JOSEPH D., IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Once again, love the reliability of this car!"

PATRICIA C., PA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The car was fine. Will never return to the dealer as had numerous problems and concerns regarding their service. gave me a price of $165. to replace cabin filter and son-in-law did it for under $10.00 in 8 minutes. Also tires they sold me were not good."

CAROL B., NJ (2009 Honda CR-V)

"High: Very comfortable and supportive seats (good lump-bar support) even without a lump-bar adjustment; relatively quick and good steering feel. Low: Not enough horse power; slow at take off; Very noisy cabin; Too bumpy ride, especially on course pavements.."

Anonymous, MN (2009 Honda CR-V)

"We got it below book value because a Chevy dealer couldn't get rid of it. The truck has held its value and continues to be an excellent buy."

HEIDI J., PA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Bought from the suburbs of a large city so the mileage was low compared to others found in our area and the pricing was more competative. Originally was going to get a Toyota Rv 4 but this was a much better ride and more interior room , especially at the shoulder."

GARY A., MI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Bought with very good discount plus this was a "Cash-for-Clunkers" special purchase that could not be beaten. Also, my actual gas mileage is way above the EPA estimate - I do drive lots of highway and very little city but the actual number consistently exceeds EPA and CR figures (although it does drop a bit in winter to closer to those estimates)."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Great car. Nice surprises included in the price of the car: accessories or functions."

FRANCOIS B., IL (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Seems well built. Noisy ride, would like more noise damping."

E D., MI (2009 Honda CR-V)

"This car has NEVER broken down. It has never needed a repair just replacement of worn parts - brakes. Even with the brakes, we got to 75000 before we needed to repair one set of brakes, and 92000 with the other. Mechanically and body wise, this is the best car we have ever owned."

JAMES R., NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"I bought from an original owner, with no accident history, who had all maintenance records (including original dealership sticker!) available & took impeccable care of the car. Also purchased for below Kelly Blue Book value!"

PATRISE D., CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Looks good. Nice car."

KENNETH C., SC (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The car is noisy. The AC isn't great, but is adequate. The Honda keys are falling apart."

PINKNEY M., NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Great price when purchased new and continues to hold its blue book value. Vehicle drives today as well as it did when purchased new in 2009. Other than usual maintenance costs no other costs have been necessary."

GLENN B., AZ (2009 Honda CR-V)

"I am somewhat disappointed with the mileage we are getting. I expected more like 24 mpg."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Very economical brand. Other than routine maintenance, we have only had a couple of low cost repairs to this vehicle in the last 135000 miles. We had a 1993 Honda Civic del Sol that had 160000 miles before we sold it."

Anonymous, FL (2009 Honda CR-V)

Lori C., MA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"A great value."

William C., VA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Love my Honda CR-V and prefer to drive it over a typical sedan and it feels so roomy and provides better view of the road.. The price on the vehicle was reasonable and included all the features we were looking for. There is plenty of room for passengers and cargo. We've had the vehicle for 8 years and have had no issues (other than airbag recalls). Annual expense has been pretty much oil changes/routine maintenance. Gas mileage isn't the greatest for city driving, but no worse than the sed..."

"A very well designed car. All wheel drive is a + here in New England. My wife loves it."

D L., CT (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The car has performed with very few problems over the last 8 years. Except for gas and filters have not spent any money on it. We have used the cargo area to haul items from the home stores, so have not needed to rent another vehicle. It gets okay gas mileage 24-28 mpg"

James E., VA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Still in great shape at 70000 miles. I have a friend that wants to buy my vehicle whenever I get a new one."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Honda CR-V)

"The CR-V has delivered all that we expected from it and performed well for over 8 years. And sometimes meeting expectations means good value, especially when your expectations are higher to start."

Brian D., CA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Great value and good car, size and comfort. Very few problems except for airbag recall, which Honda was good to provide rental while repaired."

Diane S., NC (2009 Honda CR-V)

"No complaints. Very reliable, copious cargo space."

Anonymous, MA (2009 Honda CR-V)

"Great car for the price. Feel very safe in my CRV."

Tim L., TX (2009 Honda CR-V)

"It has required only scheduled maintenance in the 8 years we've had it. Nothing has broken or worn out prematurely. As far as maintenance costs are concerned, I've never had a lower-cost car in the 35 years I've owned and driven cars."

Anonymous, WA (2009 Honda CR-V)
