The redesigned Odyssey topped our minivan ratings, although this iteration of the Odyssey traded away some of the previous generation's crisp handling qualities for a more comfortable ride. The cabin is noticeably quieter too, although some road noise persists. The jazzier exterior styling reduced cargo space by a smidgen, but rear seating is generous and easy to access.

The cabin is noticeably quieter too, although some road noise persists. The jazzier exterior styling reduced cargo space by a smidgen, but rear seating is generous and easy to access. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Honda Odyssey owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"the battery was discharged when a light was left on and then the ABS and VSA systems would not work nor the electronic sliding doors would open with the van running. Had to take the van to the dealer to have the computer reset after a dead battery"

Anonymous, UT (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
Calipers

"Had break vibration and pulsating much too often. Resulting in rotor turning, caliper cleaning and a complete break job. Weak spot with this vehicle"

Joanne T., IL (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Early warping. Need replacement due to shimmering when braking at higher speeds"

Anonymous, BC (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Normal routine brake wear

"Brakes pads and rotors required replacement as pads reached their wear lifetime (first replacement in 76,000-awesome wear). I was surprised the rotors had warped, my research found that the brakes are undersized for the vehicle leading to excessive heat and rotor warping if driven in an environment where aggressive braking is required (i.e. Washington DC)."

Richard C., VA (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Needed to replace rotor at 20000 miles even though the pads were not worn out"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"I don't understand exactly what part it is - brakes/rotors - but this car always have to have work done on them. I have records of the work performed and have spent lots to maintain this car. Some years include inspections and/or oil changes, but some years don't. Includes tires and battery replacement. 2019 through May - $600; 2018 - $2,261; 2017 - $3,924; 2016 - $512; 2015 - $1,240; 2014 - $2,013; 2013 - $504."

Mary K., NC (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"experienced shaking when braking on downhill, faster speeds. brake fluid got low, added, haven't had problem again since"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"Main complaint is the cost of replacing brake parts."

Patrick C., ON (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Replaced brake pads"

Anonymous, (2012 Honda Odyssey Unsure 3.5-L V6)
Parking brake

"Parking brake required adjustment as a result of replacing the rear the brake rotors due to normal wear and tear. Problem was not abnormal and was expected given the mileage on the brakes (76,000 miles)"

Richard C., VA (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)
Premature brake wear

"Brake pads wear out prematurely and require too frequent replacement. Brakes squeal when applying brakes while car is in reverse. Brakes pulsate when braking more forcefully than normal."

Tillie S., FL (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Brakes wore quickly which dealer said Honda had upgraded them when they were replace. However,, I had to pay full price."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"I am very easy on brakes so the problems I'm having are a design or material problem by Honda. I'm very disappointed in having this many brake issues in 65000 miles. Rotors had to be turned in first few thousand miles, obvious manufacturer problem"

Joanne T., IL (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Rotor warpage has been a problem over the last 50000 miles. The rotors have been turned and trued twice with new brake pads installed each time. Most recently about 10 months ago. Very noticeable braking shimmy returns within a few months. Rotor service thickness is well within spec. and van is not subject to hard driving/braking or towing. Pads show relatively little wear. The problem is with the OEM rotors. I will be replacing all rotors this week with aftermarket parts."

James S., FL (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Honda brake pads are being replaced every 18 months"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"All 4 brakes were replaced/re-machined due to early wear. I noticed the problem while braking during a hill descent on a highway with a posted speed limit of 65."

Anonymous, ID (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The brakes don’t seem to last very long, perhaps 25,000 miles before they start shuddering when driven for a while in demanding conditions, such as a freeway in the mountains traversing them up and down.."

Anonymous, CO (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"same as previously stated"

Robert S., NJ (2012 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"caused by rotors"

Chris M., CA (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"I was told the brake failure was due to overheating but we had no such incident that would cause this problem I suspect they were faulty from the factory"

Henry L., CA (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Wheel bearings had to be replace on one wheel"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Honda Odyssey Unsure 3.5-L V6)

"Brake pads needed to be replaced for the second time per the Honda dealer which clearly is a problem with the low number of miles."

Anonymous, OK (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Brakes pads and rotars have to be fixed more than normal."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"Pulsing and vibration has been an ongoing problem with this car since we acquired it in 2013. Rotor and caliper fixes and replacements never fixed the problem."

Louis G., CA (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"When depressing the brake there was a rhythmic pulsating of the brake pedal. Annoying. The dealership had to resurface the rotors and did a complete brake maintenance service as well. Kind of surprised with the low mileage at the time. Less than 40k mikes."

Michael P., MI (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Front brake pulsation despite new brakes"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"severe vibration experienced when braking at or above speed of 50km/h, in some cases the vibration was so extreme it felt as if control of the steering was compromised. It ended up being badly worn brake pads / calipers that caused the issue"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Totaled van one month ago. Felt the anti-lock braking system failed to stop the van in time to prevent the accident!!! I have been driving for over 50 yrs. ( Bikes, Quads, Go Karts)! I know beyond a doubt I could've stopped in time to prevent the accident with a regular braking system!!!"

George S., NJ (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"I experienced some pulsation when breaking hard. This happened around 60000 miles. It required turning down the brake discs."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"warped rotors"

Anonymous, VA (2012 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)
Regular brake failure

"Rear brakes replaced because they were worn out."

Anonymous, NE (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
Rotors

"I am not sure what happened, but the undercarriage was making a lot of loud squealing and scraping noises. My husband said it was the rotors and fixed them."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"The rotors are not able to dissipate the heat created when applying the brakes and warp, which then causes vibration when applying the brakes. Either the rotors need to be larger or of a better metal."

Richard C., CA (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"See previous discussion on brakes."

Mary K., NC (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Rotor warped after 10,000 miles. The dealer didn't want to replace them!!! Stating I could've caused the problem by hitting a water puddle! Finally, the owner admitted the manufactures put less nickel in them and tried to charge me like 20 bucks!!! He knew by the look on my face I wasn't going to pay a dime!!! Never had a problem after they were replaced."

George S., NJ (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"vibrations/Rotors warped at 47K, dealer turned them down, but at limit. replaced front rotor now at 60K, due to vibrations again (dealer goodwill paid for it). Dealer comment on frequent source of issues on odyssey and pilot, seems like cheap components. $515 list charge to replace rotors and pads - that are cheap to begin with. Pads not worn out completely but replaced, seems rotors wear as fast as pads. Dealer pushes to replace both pads and rotors, and thus expensive brake job. Had to resist"

Anonymous, IA (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors resurfaced by reliable independent garage. Vibration caused replacement after 15,oo miles. Brake pads last about 30,00 miles before replacement"

"Warped rotors caused pulsation when the brakes were applied"

Wayne D., NJ (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The front rotors are too light duty for this auto, causing vibration when braking. The vibration is very strong when applying brakes at highway speed. The dealer resurfaced them but the vibration returned after a couple of months. I replaced with non-OEM parts and the problem has been resolved"

Jeff E., KS (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors were turned twice, then replaced at 72000 miles"

Anonymous, KY (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"The vehicle has 96000 miles on it. The Front right axle and CV joint was replaced under the certified warranty at no cost to me at about 52,000 miles. Now the both front CV joints need to be replaced including the right one which was replaced 44,000 miles ago. The dealership now says it is out of warranty and will not be covered so the $1000 repair cost is my responsibility. It is not a safety issue yet, but does need to be completed. Also the rear shocks were recently replaced. It is good vehicle for its intended purpose (hauling the family around in a comfortable manner), but it is not the low cost maintenance ownership that we expected from a Honda. We have experienced the low cost maintenance ownership with all the Toyotas that we have owned. When we purchased the Odyssey, we made a deliberate choice to purchase the Odyssey instead of the Sienna due to the features on the 2012 models, but we probably will not buy another Honda vehicle because of the all the unanticipated problems with our Odyssey that we not covered the certified warranty."

Ray K., KS (2012 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Minion starting making a clicking noise when turning left about 2 years ago - when minivan was still under warranty. We took it in when the bushings were replaced under a recall notice. It was around the same time. Dealer said found nothing about the ball joints and was likely just the bushings. But the sound was unmistakeable ball joint sound. Still, the noise did go away for several months. Then it came back. And minivan was now out of warranty. Asked the dealer to take a look and they said they didn't find anything, probably just the bushings still rubbing from time to time. But we disagree, car makes the clicking sound only when turning left and not during events of suspension travel/rough roads like you would expect of a bushing."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)
Bushings

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The black rubber molding that goes around the windshield has started to come out. While driving down a highway I heard something beating against the roof of my van. I pulled over and the molding at the top passenger side of the windshield had begun coming out and was slapping against hte roof of the van. I pushed it back in as best as I could, but it kept coming out. When I had time, I went to a windshield repair business, and they were able to get it back in."

Honda America repaired the hood at a reduced price. Honda of America has not returned any inquiries for 6 months regarding the other areas of peeling in our car."

Louis G., CA (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The roof paint right in front of my sun room was peeling off. I understand that this is a problem Honda has with their white paint. The repair required that the top, sun roof and windshield be replaced. Honda paid for the removal and reinstall of the windshield as well as the entire paint job for the top of my van. My out of pocket cost worked out to be $200 for the cost of the windshield. The shop that Honda recommended was amazing and very professional. Each time is was a week without the vehicle. The second and third time I waited to see if the paint peeling would be limited to that area. Each time the peeling paint would continue to spread. "My van is titanium white, and for the past 3+ years the paint has been peeling off the roof (more than %50 gone off the roof) and a little off the rear door. I did not notice any rusting which is why I never had it painted myself, too expensive. Last year I received notice of the paint recall for titanium white, and Honda had the roof and back door only repainted. The paint company Honda used was not Honda, but they did a fantastic job and it looks brand new."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Honda Odyssey Unsure 3.5-L V6)

"white paint was peeling off entire roof, hood and around edges of lift gate. Honda finally acknowledged the problem in 2019 and did a recall for repainting only the areas that peeled. Since the other areas of paint were oxidized after 7 years, at the suggestion of the dealer I had the car detailed and simonized to eliminate obvious differences between new and old paint and it worked out very good. The problem originated when Honda eliminated a final clear coat in the painting process. They used a "new" paint that supposedly eliminated the need for the clear coat. Clearly it failed in that respect."

"We had persistent problems with engine codes P0301 and P3400, but generally felt no effect on engine performance. In one incident last spring the engine began to run very rough, especially during acceleration and had lost 1-1/2 qt of oil. A local mechanic cleared the codes and got us running well enough to drive home from our vacation cut short. Honda eventually discovered cylinder #1 to be badly scratched due to suspected failure of the porcelain failing on the spark plug. Honda replaced the short block under an unadvertised repair advisory of some type. We are grateful for the free rebuild, but felt Honda wasn't fully truthful about the nature of the problem. I learned there was a class-action lawsuit against Honda over similar engine error-code issues."

Scott M., AR (2012 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The dashboard engine light turned on without any warning and although the car could move, it was recommended that it only be driven below about 30 mph. It turns out that the spark plugs were completely corroded, caused by something else inside the engine. This is apparently a known problem with this car because there was a warranty extension to cover this exact issue. The engine needed extensive disassembly (I believe it took a mechanic 5 hours) and I was without a car for 2 or 3 days, though at least I didn't have to pay for the repairs."

"Passenger sliding doors, both sides but seems driver's side sliding door more. Sometimes it won't close by its own motor power and we have to put it into manual and close manually. Athen we switch to powered mode again and they open fine, but usually the same problem closing and we have to switch to manual. The problem usually lasts a day or two and then can go back to full auto. until the problem strikes again. Not sure how often it occurs....maybe once per month and lasts a couple or few days. Not a huge problem since there is a workaround...but a major annoyance. Of course, every time we're at the dealer for something else and have them take a look at it the doors work just fine and they find nothing wrong."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite 3.5-L V6)

"When returning from a 4,000 km road trip, the van engine began running rough, and anything other than mild acceleration resulted in a loss of power. It occurred on Victoria Day so no Honda dealers were open. We pressed on the last 1,000 km and when we arrived home the engine was idling with the clatter of a diesel. The following morning the van started and ran normally and we were able to drive it to the dealership. The local Honda dealer was able to diagnose a failure of several piston rings allowing oil to enter the combustion chambers resulting in fouling the spark plugs causing the power loss and rough running. Apparently it is a known problem with this vehicle and thankfully Honda has a hidden extended warranty to cover this. Three of the pistons had to have ring replacements. Once the work was completed, the van has run flawlessly and we've put another 30,000 or so km on it."
