Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.
CR's City Mileage CR's City Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course.
CR's Highway Mileage CR's Highway Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed highway cruising.
Annual Fuel Cost Annual Fuel Cost The cost and amount of fuel used in 12,000 miles and is calculated from CR's overall mileage.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.
Emergency Handling Emergency Handling Several factors go into the rating, including the avoidance maneuver speed and confidence, as well as how the vehicle behaves when pushed to its limit.
Comfort / Convenience
Ride Ride Our expert judgment of how well the suspension isolates and absorbs road imperfections and how steady it keeps the body on various road surfaces.
Noise Noise Our expert judgment of the vehicle's interior noise level in everyday driving.
Front Seat Comfort Front Seat Comfort Our judgment of how comfortable the front seat is for drivers of various heights.
Rear Seat Comfort Rear Seat Comfort Our judgment of how comfortable the rear seat is for two passengers to sit across.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, AB (2008 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"It had used tires on them two of which were worn out on the inside thus giving a shaky ride between 40mph and 50mph but smoothed out after 50. So, I replaced all 4 with brand new Michelin, all weather from my favorite tire shop COSTCO and had the tires aligned . Voila! It is now very steady up to 75mph and for sure beyond that. But I dare not try lest I irritate a brother officer."

Robert A., CA (2008 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Pep Boys could not do a correct alignment - told to take to dealer, who charged me $100 to say that could not do it either and did not have a fix and that "no after market parts were advised."On - line advice (Piloteers.com) helped - plus Roger Vogt"

There is practically no rust on the body or the underside. Well to be honest, I purchased it only in Nov. 14, 2018. It is a 4-wheel drive and my son and I have taken it camping a few times. Wind noise

"Wind or road noise seems especially loud on the highway at higher speeds. It's hard to carry on a conversation between the two front passengers and conversation with anyone in the 2nd row seating is more challenging."

Salvador P., CA (2008 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Engine rebuild or replacement

"The car died. Dealer recommended engine replacement. We opted for mechanic rebuilding it. It was in the shop for 2 months and failed again. The mechanic said it was a computer problem. Another said CV joint. A third mechanic at a second dealership found sludge problems due to the previous owner not getting oil changes. It finally drives ok but it makes funny noises"

"Catalytic converter had to be replaced."

David C., MI (2008 Honda Pilot 3.5-L V6)

Fuel cap

"Fuel Cap security difficult to gauge. Have replaced and Check Engine Light becomes erratic"

Anonymous, GA (2008 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Check light comes on at least twice a month, usually opening an closing the fuel cap and driving the Pilot for 25 or more miles will usually allow the check light to turn off. If that doesn't work, repeat the above process again"

Kevin R., TX (2008 Honda Pilot 3.5-L V6)

"Replacing fuel cap took care of engine light"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Honda Pilot Value 3.5-L V6)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"I've changed two (possibly 3 O2 sensors) since I've owned the vehicle (I purchased it new) The check engine light comes on from time to time, indicating a 420 code, which relates to one of the catalytic converters. The ck eng light will remain on for approx 300 to 400 miles (sometimes longer) and then goes off for another 500 miles or so. I'm trying to hold off from changing the converter since I may be purchasing a new veh sometime next year, or at least I'm hoping. Aside from that I've loved the veh since I purchased it. It's never really given me any problems. I do some of the maintenance myself. Major maintenance I take it to the dealer. The last O2 sensor I changed myself."

"A costly service to replace sensors"

Steven S., AK (2008 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"Catalytic converter had a blockage needed to be replaced"

Anonymous, FL (2008 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"I received a warning light on the dash which indicated a problem with the cat. my mechanic told me the converter is part of the exhaust manifold and it will need to be replaced in order to fix it. This design seems idiotic to me. Why incorporate a replaceable component such as the catalytic converter into a part that usually never needs to be replaced like an exhaust manifold."

Perry P., ON (2008 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"I became aware of this problem because the Check Engine Light appeared on the dashboard. I called my Honda dealer and made an appointment which resulted in the need to replace the converter."

"The radiator had a microscopic leak that resulted in little to no loss of fluid until the outside temperature increased about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature increased, the radiator cracked all the way and lost fluid somewhere, just not in my garage. I was lucky that I was near home when the temperature gauge maxed out. Had it towed to a garage and repaired."
