Although the previous Pilot was previously considered a Top Pick in this category, we were disappointed with this model. It lost ground on interior fit and finish, as well as braking. Road noise remains omnipresent and the center console is crowded. That said, the Pilot is a very functional vehicle. Fuel economy is improved by one mpg overall, it still seats eight, and it drives pretty well.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"We have four areas where the paint has peeled or chalked and rust has moved in."

Anonymous, MI (2010 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"Excessive oxidization of paint occurring. Car is 9 years old. This shouldn't be happening. From reviewing the problem on the internet it appears that this is a common problem for Honda. This will probably impact the re-sale value of this vehicle that other than that is in great mechanical condition. In process of figuring out if Honda Corporation is willing to do anything about this. If they don't this will be the LAST Honda I'll ever purchase."

"The paint started to deteriorate very fast and also am having the same problem with my 2010 Civic. It is cracking, chipping and fading."

Anonymous, CA (2010 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Paint started to fade in 2018. Accelerated in 2019 with major oxidization. Took the car in to repair shop to get an estimate of fix the problem and they estimated $6,000 for an entire paint job or $1,900 to fix the room and hood (the most OXIDIZED area). Also took the car to the dealership. Honda was willing to give me a $1,000 discount on a complete paint job with them. This is a 10 year old car and it's NOT worth spending that much $$ to fix the paint. Talked with my mechanic and he indicated that it was simply a "bad paint job" during the manufacturing. Did a google search and it appears that Honda Autos around 2010 have issues in relation to this oxidization of the paint on the car. It's a shame, the CAR mechanically is fine. Just looks like crap. I am going to purchase a new car this year. It won't be a Honda. I expect to sell the Honda Pilot at a significantly reduced value due to the aesthetic look of the car. The interior of the car is is very good condition. I did look after this car. It's a shame that I was unfortunate enough to get a crappy paint job."

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

Dennis T., UT (2010 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"after driving for approximately 60 minutes the heater makes a clicking sound and then starts blowing much cooler air from the front air vents, it's uncomfortably colder than what it originally blows and increasing the temp degrees higher doesn't stop the cool air flow."

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"On trips longer than 8 hours the vehicle would start to overheat and engine would get rough. Had to stop a couple of times to let the engine rest for about 15 minutes then I could continue with my travel. Took vehicle to Honda dealer and they diagnosed a problem with the number 4 cyclinder and replaced it for free even though I had almost 200,000 miles on the vehicle"

"related to piston ring, cylinder had to be removed and cleaned. Problem was previously misdiagnosed by another Honda dealer"

"2010 Honda Pilots had seal failures between the spark plug and the engine. The seals all had to be replaced. One dealership in NJ was great and gave me all the information I needed regarding the issue they knew was happening with the engine. The dealership in PA were I had it fixed wasn't certain but after some analytical work on their part plus a call to hq they said they would cover it. That recall is limited so they basically know there is an issue but also telling people if they have a car with so many miles it'll be your responsibility. I feel bad for those people who have to get $ 2k fix not knowing that Honda has a system wide problem with those seals."

After doing some research and testing i found out that the compressor just would not engage because of a faulty electrical relay. Its apparently a problem with the Honda Pilots around this time. It was annoying however I'm glad a simple relay replacement (which i did myself) and not a bad compressor."
