Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. Road Test

While this version of the Pilot shows its age, the basic blueprint still provides plenty of space and convenient functionality within a comparatively small package. Driving dynamics are sound with a steady, supple and controlled ride complementing responsive handling. The engine and transmission also operate very smoothly.

On the other hand, at 18 mpg overall, fuel economy could be better, partly due to the automatic transmission having just five gears. Handling is untidy and sloppy at the limits. Braking performance is also mediocre. While the powertrain is smooth and refined, acceleration is middling. Pronounced road noise also makes this Honda a very loud vehicle. Interior furnishings are blatantly low-rent and festooned with cheap, hard plastics. Modern luxury amenities are sparse, something of a testimony to the time when this version of the Pilot hit the market back in 2008. A rear-view camera is standard on all trim lines, but other modern high-tech safety gear like forward-collision warning or blind spot monitoring is conspicuously absent. Further, this version of the Pilot scored a Poor in the IIHS small-overlap crash test.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2012 Honda Pilot owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

"I have replaced brake pads every year. I think that the wear is accelerated by warped rotors. I am now using heavy duty brake pads and i hope this works better than standard pads"

Bruce N., UT (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"This vehicle eats front brakes and requires frequent front end alignment. Noisy, Noisy, Noisy"

Andrew W., SC (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Bad vibration developed when depressing the brake pedal, especially going downhill"

Steve B., CO (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Warped front and rear rotors at 84000 kms. To soon as far as I am concerned and expensive to repair"

Wade P., SK (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The front rotors warped again and again and have been replaced several times. This causes premature brake pad failure. The rotors and pads last less than one year. I had to replace the front rotors with heavy duty rotors. The warping is less, but there is still a little warping"

Bruce N., UT (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors had to be replaced at about 35000 miles"

Clive D., NY (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Warped when heated going down long hills"

Anonymous, IN (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors had to be resurfaced shortly after purchase (less than 200 miles). Now when rotors get warm braking feels like rotors are warped - pulsing. Waiting for pads and rotors to get a bit more wear then replacing"

Anonymous, NH (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Second time in 26,000 miles rotors have been warped requiring resurfacing"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Pulsating brakes / Warped rotors"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The rotors warped severely for no justifiable reason. The mechanic that fixed them said that it was due to the extremely hard oem pads that were designed for long life. He recommended replacing them with a softer, shorter life pad when it becomes re"

Anonymous, ID (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The rotor on one side wore down even after a normal brake replacement at 35000 miles. It was replaced again at 46000"

Matt T., CA (2012 Honda Pilot)

"Warped, had then turned by Honda and they warped again within a few months. Obvious flaw in the rotors. Several friends have late model Honda and they have had the same problem"

Louis M., PA (2012 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Brakes squeaked when activated"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"if car sits a day then brakes squeak for first few times applied"

Clive D., NY (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Parking brake

"When wet, the parking brake "locks" onto one of the wheels and sounds like a shotgun (and jumps) when you move from the stopped position. We were told by the dealer that it is normal but makes us concerned about the safety of the vehicle"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

"Had to replace right front ball joint at less than 60k miles. Now, left ball joint is bad. Overall, this vehicle is Extremely Noisy. Wind and Engine noise permeate the cab regardless of vehicle speed. Honda has apparently addressed this issue with the minivan looking 2017. If I had wanted a minivan I would had bought one"

Andrew W., SC (2012 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Leaking oil, lower control arm bushing"

Tomasz B., IL (2012 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, FL (2012 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)
Warning lights

"With 20,000 miles on warranty electrical system screwed. Turn signal stopped working, 4 way stops then works again. Warning lights for brakes, transmission and multiple areas light and go away. Stering wheel locks and can't unlock with out override. Many other issues that prevent it from being safe to drive. Was with local Honda dealership for over 2 weeks with Honda care involved. Thought problem solved. Nope 3 days driving leads to same problem but instead of intermittent it was now constan"

Holly P., NY (2012 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Keyless entry

"Actually, it was the key itself. It suddenly would not start the car and apparently could not be fixed. We now have several different keys to open remotely, open the doors, and start the car. Some work for some functions, others do not"

Head gasket

"The engine on the Pilot and Odyssey have an Eco boost system that operates on only 2, 4, or 6 cylinders depending upon speed and power needed. So 2-4 are always wearing down. Heard this happens to other Pilots where Honda replaces heads and seals for free due to numbers. After repair the rebuilt cylinders not in sync with 5-6 so engine noise. Honda not willing to fix that so owner must pay $800 on up to stop the noise or have to live with this growl in low gears"
