Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

While this version of the Pilot shows its age, the basic blueprint still provides plenty of space and convenient functionality within a comparatively small package. Driving dynamics are sound with a steady, supple and controlled ride complementing responsive handling. The engine and transmission also operate very smoothly.

On the other hand, at 18 mpg overall, fuel economy could be better, partly due to the automatic transmission having just five gears. Handling is untidy and sloppy at the limits. Braking performance is also mediocre. While the powertrain is smooth and refined, acceleration is middling. Pronounced road noise also makes this Honda a very loud vehicle. Interior furnishings are blatantly low-rent and festooned with cheap, hard plastics. Modern luxury amenities are sparse, something of a testimony to the time when this version of the Pilot hit the market back in 2008. A rear-view camera is standard on all trim lines, but other modern high-tech safety gear like forward-collision warning or blind spot monitoring is conspicuously absent. Further, this version of the Pilot scored a Poor in the IIHS small-overlap crash test.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Normal routine brake wear

"Although I like this car, the brakes seem to be a weak point. The brakes seem to need a lot more servicing than other cars I've had. I find I'm spending more money keeping the brakes in shape than I should."

Anonymous, ON (2014 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"65000 on original rear brakes."

Joseph D., SC (2014 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, MD (2014 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Unexplained cupping on the rotors resulting in vibration when brakes applied with moderate pressure."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Purchased certified used from our local Honda dealer. Noticed within a week that the rotors were warped. Should have been discovered/repaired during the inspection process before being sold. Was not covered/repaired by dealer afterward. Is not covered on the extended warranty."

"We must turn the rotors frequently. I believe this is a weakness in design."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Shortly after purchasing the Pilot i noticed front end shaking when decelerating from around 60mph. Honda dealer resurfaced the rotor and that fixed it for a few months. It started doing the same thing again when decelerating at speeds over 45mph"

John T., TX (2014 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Front brake rotors turned twice; original brake pads still ok"

Joseph J., OH (2014 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"A known failure with front lower control arm bushings with a technical bulleting covering repairs, 4 wheel alignment to pilots. Both my 2019 and 2014 Pilots had identical failures. However, the dealer first will tell an unaware consumer that this is not covered by basic or extended Honda warranties. However, I read a bulletin from Honda going back to my 2011 Pilot indicating dealer would inspect and correct any Oil leaking from lower control arm bushings at no charge! Should have been a NHASTA recall!"
