At one time, driving a Honda Pilot meant that driving dynamics, family friendliness, and powertrain refinement were more important to you than the macho, trucklike SUV look. The Pilot was a natural next step for Civic and Accord owners with growing families. But something went awry in the late-2000s. Honda changed tack, making the Pilot more trucky and cheap-feeling.

Other manufacturers stole buyers by making a better Honda than Honda. With the 2016 redesign, Honda takes a swing at a softer, more carlike Pilot.

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"In car touch screen often freezes up and is slow to respond. Trips to dealer have not improved the problems."

Sean R., MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"screen goes blank and you have to stop and turn the car off and on to reboot the system to get it to work. has happened aa couple of time"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Every once in a while the display is blank for no reason and will stays blank no matter what buttons I press. Turning the car off and back on seems to fix the problem."

Stephen B., NJ (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"When operating vehicle with map display and navigation system giving route directions the screen will suddenly go blank. Vehicle has to be shut off and restarted to get the display back. This is irritating and dangerous in congested urban wayfinding."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Voice recognition unreliable at times. Types gibberish when I speak telephone numbers"

In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Much too complicated system."

Hugh J., CO (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The GPS on one occasion had us circling a neighborhood and was unable to navigate us home. It repeatedly chooses the wrong direction i.e. going north when it should take us south. We don't trust it anymore and only use Google Maps on our phone."

Dennis E., CA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"can drive you crazy."

Anonymous, MO (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Difficult to set up and is sometimes intermittent"

Anonymous, MD (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The Hands Free Link system Honda uses as a subcomponent has a horrible interface, and does not play nicely with Android. Specifically, the latest Samsung Galaxy has never been supported. If I'd known this, I never would have purchased the vehicle. Bluetooth activities like hands-free dialing do not work, texts cannot be read or responded to via voice, and I am back to having to pull over to dial if I need to make an urgent call. When I am able to get the vehicle to recognize my phone & set up speed dial, it will forget it again within a few weeks and I have to spend ~20 minutes setting it up again. Speed-dial is the ONLY way to use your phone hands-free unless you activate Android Auto and use Android Auto to do voice features."

Lora F., CA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Very frustrating! Cannot seem to keep devised connected."

Richard G., MI (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"i ALWAYS HAVE TO FIDDLE WITH THE CONTROLS TO GET IT TO WORK. iT SEEMS TO PREFER PAIRING WITH MY WIFE;S PHONE."

Shelby R., PA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"The entire "infotainment" system is ridiculously complex and very difficult to use. You simply cannot see the screen in daylight. The controls are all touchscreen, so you must squint and fumble with it while trying to drive. There are NO tactile buttons or knobs, so you must take your attention off the road to find another station or simply turn it on. I rate this system zero out of ten. Had I known these things before purchase, I would have looked elsewhere"

Phillip B., AL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"To correct the problem the complete radio/display unit was replaced."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Rear entertainment system (e.g., DVD player, rear screen)

"Will not play Blu-Ray DVDs. Begins showing previews and other messages, but stops when it reaches the feature presentation. Will not respond to touch screen commands. Will play non-Blu-Ray just fine."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"Every time I take my car to the dealer it seems they have software fixes to install. Sometimes they work well and sometimes they create more problems."

Dennis E., CA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"does not recognize my voice"

James F., NY (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Promised safety feature of hands-free dialing, etc. But voice commands don't work. Honda uses Hands Free Link as their vendor, and that vendor NEVER supports the latest Galaxy phone. Android users will have serious issues with basic functionality of hands free services. Unacceptable in this day and age."

Lora F., CA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water dripping from roof trim above rear hatch. Initially diagnosed as clogged sun roof drains which was not the cause. Eventually found poorly sealed body joints at each roof rail. Took several weeks to find and fix. Hounds provided a loaner car for entire time."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"It’s currently leaking water somewhere around the back hatch when I go through a car wash for past 2months.. Hasn’t happened with rain. Wet inside after car wash. I haven’t had time to take it to the dealer yet."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Mildew smell from the AC system"

David T., NC (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The front doors must be to low at the tops and causing the weather striping not to cover and seal out the wind noise. Had it into the dealer 4 times and couldn't fix it. Not sure what to do about it."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"This is the cause of rattling windows"

John T., IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Squeaks or rattles

"RATTLES FROM REAR AREA WHILE DRIVING"

Rodney B., FL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"back bumper makes a thumping noise when going over uneven road"

Kenneth S., PA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The windows rattle when partially open. Honda says that's just the way it is. I will continue to complain."

John T., IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The engine makes significant noise that sounds like the valves need adjusting, although the vehicle only has 10,000 miles on it. This noise started after the dealer had the car for 2 weeks to fix an engine computer problem. They maintain that the noise is normal, but it wasn't there before the engine computer work and it doesn't sound normal."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"When windows are partially open they rattle."

John T., IL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"After 12000 miles car sounded like a ten year old car. Many rattles."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Rattles and rear suspension noise. Finally traded in car"

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"There is a strange noise being caused by some emission control component. Honda says it should not cause a problem, but a replacement would have to be scheduled because they don't have the part. I plan to have the part replaced, under warranty, because I do not trust that it is innocuous."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"took the vehicle back to the dealer and they knew exactly what the cause was. so after 15 minutes we were back on the road.. minus the noise…."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Windfoil on roof of car (just in front of sunroof) rattles loudly at highway speeds. Has been tightened twice, and we were told that if it happens again, they will just remove it."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Wind noise

"top of front doors weather striping doesn't cover/seal the gap between the top of the doors and the roof so I get wind noise at higher speeds or when the wind is blowing."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Front Passengers channel needed to be replaced twice - still had wind noise after first channel was replaced"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Driver side door\window has excessive wind noise at highway speeds that was not present when purchased"

Pete T., FL (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"There is wind noise when driving the vehicle. It doesn´t seem to seal completely."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The AC compressor failed on our new 2017 Pilot. According to the dealer this was a factory defect, it never worked from the factory. They mentioned this is a problem with many new Honda Pilots."

Sean R., MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The a/c stopped cooling took it to the dealer and they had to recharge the system after only 6 months old."

Derrick R., MT (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"it was not cooling the car, nor heating it well"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"The AC system completely failed and the compressor had to be replaced."

Sean R., MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"A/C controls are nearly as bad as the radio...overly complex, overly automatic. Give me on/off, a T-stat, and a fan control"

Phillip B., AL (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Auto climate control runs continueously in recirculation feature"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Blower (fan) motor

"Bearing was bad...made a noise on low speed"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Heated or cooled seat controls

"Ventilated seats do not work no air comes out. Taken back to the dealer and they said operating per specs because the seat fan is on . I complained to Honda USA because there is some kind of defect if no air comes out of the holes in the ventilated seats. They were very rude and just brushed it offsaying that if the dealer said it was working per spec there was nothing they could do. I know some of the ventilated seats in other Pilots work because the one we took for a test drive worked fine."

Edward K., PA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Heater system

"Heat to the feet is poor at best. If heat blows to the face, feet get very cold. Have to keep switching between face and feet to keep feet warm. Honda dealer said it is a known issue, but Honda says it's withing normal limits."

Lori L., MN (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Refrigerant leaks

"A/C needed charging."

Anonymous, ND (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"A major refrigerant hose developed a leak and was replaced twice."

Rod E., TX (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"The 9 speed transmission that comes on the higher trim levels is a disappointment. Nothing but issues including poor shifting, poor controls (buttons instead of a lever), rough gear changing, slow gear shifting. I do not trust the transmission."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Step on the accelerator and the vehicle hesitates/will not move"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)

"AT 25-26 MPH and 32-33 MPH vehicle sometimes abruptly downshifts before shifting. Dealer unable to replicate so it hasn't been fixed"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"Rough downshifting."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"After putting it in reverse and backing up some, the transmission does not seem to reconnect and slips when putting it in Drive. Also, gear shifting is rough while driving. Sometimes the car does not accelerate enough and other times too much. There is also a delay when climbing a hill and it has to drop down too many gears to climb.. Other times, it seems to stay in a lower gear too long raising the engine RPM."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"The Pilot would stutter consistently, but thankfully was still under warranty. They flushed the transmission fluid several times and it solved the problem."

Susan P., PA (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)
Transmission leaks

"Took 2 days to repair, but under warranty. Had to remove entire engine to replace seal that was leaking."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"I'm not sure if it's considered a sensor but one day the car shut off while driving it. Lost all power. Luckily I wasn't going too fast. Dealer said it was a switch on the transmission where the buttons are that needed to be replaced. Very scary."

Stephen B., NJ (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Premature brake wear

"Brakes faded and vibrated after taking it in for service for a clicking sound from the calipers. Was told honda spaces their calipers very far apart as to improve milage. After the service, the brakes vibrated badly"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Pulsation or vibration

"When a car changes lanes too closely in front of you the automatic braking is very aggressive at highway speeds. This very hard braking caused warped rotors and premature brake ware. Now I just disable collision mitigation during highway driving which defeats its purpose but saves money on brake service."

Scottie P., OH (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Rotors

"The rotors warped at approximately 25000 miles and could not be adjusted."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Rotors had to be cut secondary to rough braking."

Anonymous, TN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
Squeaking

"Within a week of buying the car, the front brakes started squeaking when being applied. The problem went away after about 10k miles."

William C., AZ (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

Anonymous, MO (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Drivers visor came off twice when rotating to block sun from drivers window requiring a trip to,the dealer to replace the attachment housing.. I hesitate to even do attempt to move it like that again."

Mark W., PA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"forward collision warning goes off excessively when driving on two lane road and meeting cars in the opposite lane. honda could not remedy and said it was part of the system when cars are too close to the center lane even though it goes off when neither car is near the center lane"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"doesnt hold speed down hill"

Todd C., NY (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The control is very jerky. It accelerates rapidly toward a vehicle and then slam on brakes. Adaptive cruise control on Lincoln and previous Passat are very smoothe. Appears to need a software update, but Honda Service says none is available."

J L., SC (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)

"slams on breaks when car cuts you off"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Electronic or air suspension

"The SUV ride is hard. It does not absorb bumps well at all."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Honda Pilot Elite 3.5-L V6)
Springs or torsion bars

"The noise from the ride is annoying. When hitting a sharp bump it sounds like there is something loose in the suspension. When taken to the dealer they checked it over and told us nothing was wrong it was just the way the Pilot rides."

Derrick R., MT (2017 Honda Pilot EX 3.5-L V6)
Tire wear is uneven

"only on the front wheel...they said we need to bring in for alignment every year...I think something else is wrong"

Anonymous, MA (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"The engine computer malfunctioned and the vehicle was not drivable for 2 weeks while the Honda dealer was debugging and fixing it."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)

"A computer malfunction caused the car to drain the battery. It could not be started or jump started. Honda had to tow it to their repair shop. They kept the car for 2 weeks waiting for a specialist to look at it. In the end, they said they are not sure why it malfunctioned. Although it hasn't yet happened again, I do not trust that car."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Honda Pilot LX 3.5-L V6)
Fuel leaks

"We purchased a new 2017 pilot touring from a new honda dealer. We had major fuel system problems with the vehicle, there was fuel odors in and outside the vehicle. It got so bad it became unsafe to drive. The dealer took it back, and gave us another new identical vehicle. This new vehicle dos not have the fuel problem as bad, but it does have occasional fuel odors. We also had the AC compressor fail on the replacement vehicle"

Sean R., MN (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Fuel cap

"The Pilot has a cap-less system. It froze without warning, I could not put gas in the car. In my opinion this feature is a solution to a problem no one has. Stay with the twist on cap."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

Anonymous, AB (2017 Honda Pilot EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Head gasket

"My 2017 Pilot experienced all warning trouble lights at the same time coming on at the same time. This caused the Pilot to go into limp mode. Under this situation , the Pilot would only go 25 mph. This happened 4 times and the dealer replaced the 2017, with a 2018 Piot."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Honda Pilot Touring 3.5-L V6)
