Performance
Acceleration Acceleration Acceleration tests are conducted on a smooth, flat pavement straightaway at the track. Time, speed, and distance measurements are taken with a precise GPS-based device that’s hooked to a data-logging computer.
0 to 60 mph 0 to 60 mph (sec.) The time in seconds that a vehicle takes to reach 60 mph from a standstill with the engine idling.
Transmission Transmission Transmission performance is determined by shifting smoothness, response, shifter action, and clutch actuation for manual transmissions.
Fuel Economy Fuel Economy We perform our own fuel-economy tests, independent of the government's often-quoted EPA figures and the manufacturers' claims. Using a precise fuel-flow measuring device spliced into the fuel line, we run two separate circuits to represent city and highway consumption.
CR's Overall Mileage CR's Overall Mileage CR's overall mileage is a composite of measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course and highway cruising; and CR's 150-mile test trip of mixed driving, if tested. In recent road tests, we've discontinued the 150-mile trip test.
CR's City Mileage CR's City Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed city course.
CR's Highway Mileage CR's Highway Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed highway cruising.
Annual Fuel Cost Annual Fuel Cost The cost and amount of fuel used in 12,000 miles and is calculated from CR's overall mileage.
Braking Braking The braking rating is a composite of wet and dry stopping distances and pedal feel. Braking distance is from 60 mph, with no wheels locked.
Emergency Handling Emergency Handling Several factors go into the rating, including the avoidance maneuver speed and confidence, as well as how the vehicle behaves when pushed to its limit.
Comfort / Convenience

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. "Rust build up"

Anonymous, MD (2009 Hyundai Sonata SE 3.3-L V6)

"I believe that the rotors on this model and other cars are NOT built to last intentionally. They don't stand up to normal braking / wear and are a designed wekness that is a source of profit for car dealers / mechanics. These never were an issue with cars I drove made in the US during the 1960's through th 1990's The problems I have had were on import brands - one made in Japan and one assembled in the US under a foreign company / name. Even though I drive way fewer miles per year then the average driver, I don't abuse my cars and I get them serviced regularly as needed (oil changes) and as required by the owners manual or if I detect a noise or abnormality. I have had 2 instances where the brakes have damaged a rotor an the rotor had to be rplaced at great expense to me. The rotors could not be 'machined' 'turned' or resurfaced and had to be discarded on a Toyota Camry and now on the Hyundai Sonota. This has caused me to question the quality of the parts used and the overall design of the breaks on import cars."

Anonymous, WI (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"the vehicle pulls to the right when your foot is used to stop the car using the brakes"

Anonymous, NV (2009 Hyundai Sonata 3.3-L V6)
Squeaking

"I have had to replace the REAR brakes 3 times so far , rear rotors twice and 1 caliper. The front brakes were replaced once"

Robert D., RI (2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Once the oem brakes were replaced I've replaced pads and rotors twice. I bought the best available but they still squeak"

Robert D., NY (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"it was a slight squeak and dealer rep suggested it might be some rust due to low mileage. The noise did not impair brake effectiveness. $900 later WOW"

"The built in gps and radio display/touch screen stopped working and would only come up in calibration mode"

John P., TX (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 3.3-L V6)

"Told it was a chip problem. Interestingly, if the car sits out in sun for few hours and gets really hot, display is perfectly normal, and everything works until turned off. This has been observed to occur 4 different times. Otherwise, with blank or screen full of lines, only radio will work, and can only scan for channels. Annoying but does not affect car's performance,"

Anonymous, VA (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 3.3-L V6)

"Switch on console electrical contacts became corroded and needed a blade to scrape off the corrosion to make work again. This was not documented in any repair manual and all others suggested replacing the entire console control unit which would cost a lot of money compared to the contacts but if a better, low voltage switch had been used this would never have been a problem"

Anonymous, FL (2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"My Hyundai Sonata would just shut completely off while I was driving. No warning light would come on. It was very frightening, and since the mechanic could not duplicate the problem, I would not drive on a highway. After one year of this, it was determined that the computer in my car had to be replaced. My car is running fine now."

Elizabeth F., FL (2009 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

After repairs, the vehicle began consuming oil, they said gasket was leaking and I had to pay again for them to reseal, engine still loosing oil but no leak evident, suspect cylinder seals were damaged and oil is leaking into the chamber.
