This refreshed version of the Sonata packs a lot of gear. It also delivers a pleasant ride, a quiet and spacious cabin and very good fit and finish. The four-cylinder engine provides reasonable power and attains impressive fuel economy, while the V6 powertrain boasts top-grade refinement. Driving enthusiasts need not apply though, handling, while secure, does not make it fun to drive.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"The V6 is powerful. The handling is that of a larger sedan."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Acceleration is very good 'cause it has a torquyL-4 engine, but you have to go to the metal all the time. However, it does not fill secure on the road like doing a power slide with it."

PASCUAL D., MI (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Headlights TOO dim"

WALTER R., NC (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The car has always had a hesitation when accelerating from a stop."

GREG P., MO (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"This car has a five star crash test. Great styling, handles well on the road. Good pickup and powerful for a 4 cylinder motor. Great gas mileage. 38 MPG at 65 mph. 41 MPG at 60 mph."

R C., CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The 2009 Hyundai Sonata was priced about what I paid for it but I still am paying for it. It is not getting as good gas mileage as I expected. The dealership says that 24 mpg is within the range of that model with the miles I drive."

ALFRED M., CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Acceleration and handling are good...for a 4 cylinder. Put on premium tires, one size oversized and handling is now wonderful. These tires are the best I've ever had...full depth siping so they should stay that way. 35000 miles on them, may get 70 total."

E B., MI (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"comfort and dependability"

JAMES J., TN (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Beautifully designed V6 engine, extremely responsive throughout power range. Very good handling."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"A bit of hesitation when starting from a stopped position."

JAMES M., PA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"good acceleration, but jumpy, transmission shift is not always smooth, seems to have plenty of power"

M S., WA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"A little slow accelerating uphill especially when the air conditioning is running. As time goes on it seems to be slower response when accelerating from a stop light."

Anonymous, MB (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Handles poorly on winter roads. The wheel slip control is totally dangerous. If a wheel slips, power should transfer to other wheels, it does but then they all slip and there is no power to any wheels. I have literally been stuck on my hill with a racing engine and no power then sliding backward on ice with no control. The car can't handle snow deeper than 2 inches without the slip control tossing you all over."

GINGER H., WI (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"So so handling"

Anonymous, QC (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Great acceleration, handles well on interstate or city."

LILLY T., TN (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very weak acceleration. So much so that I brought it back to the dealer after a week or so and asked them to check the transmission. They did and said it was working the way it was supposed to."

DARREN B., MA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"It is terrible in snow! We live in northern Illinois."

STEVEN P., IL (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"When the car is going about 45 mph the engine struggles because the transmission is in overdrive (5th gear) and will not step down. So the engine acts like it is underpowered and is irritating. So I have to go into manual mode and drop it into 4th gear."

MARIO R., TX (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The interior seats get incredibly dirty and are impossible to get clean. I didn't test drive on a freeway and it's really noisy on freeways. Cruise control doesn't hold the speed going down hills"

GAIL L., AZ (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

SUSAN P., VA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I've driven this car round trip from Virginia to Denver twice in the past three years and found it extremely comfortable. It rode nicely, the inside temperature was always pleasant, and it started the first time after every stop. It's hard to ask for a more reliable, comfortable car with plenty of inside room."

CHARLES P., VA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The seats are not comfortable for long distance driving ."

Anonymous, PA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Seats are uncomfortable on longer trips"

Anonymous, NV (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"More road noise than I would like"

LAIRD H., OR (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Seats are not that comfortable"

Anonymous, NY (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The LCD display for the radio and other instruments is very difficult to read at times, especially in bright sunlight."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Like the height of the seats. Easy to get in and out without strain on the knees."

JANICE H., NC (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Cloth seats are comfortable for long distance"

L G., AB (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Climate control hard to regulate. It's hard to tell which mode it is in. Plus, that damn rattle behind the glove box. ( open the glove box half way and it goes away )."

WAYNE H., SC (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Seat motor failed. All 4 window controls failed."

MICHAEL S., TX (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very comfortable seats and good climate control. But the driver's side window glass has had a defect since the beginning - an area that fogs up and has now spread to the front windshield - that the dealer has refused to acknowledge or fix. Additionally, the coating on the door handle peeled off and was very sharp. It was changed once and is now peeling and sharp again. The driver's visor doesn't stay up, and would be an outrageously expensive fix, so it's being held in place with rope, and t"

SHEILA G., NV (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Seats are very comfortable. Rattling noise from the sun roof is sometimes irritating at low speeds."

JACKIE M., CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Everything good except the road noise is more than desired."

Anonymous, TN (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"After 100,000 miles I am still impressed with the quality of comfort performance and handling in this relatively inexpensive car. Maintenance cost has been minimal."

Anonymous, KY (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Generally good, but the suspension is solid, but occasionally rough. Fit & finish are excellent. The drivers, seat is a bit hard after 75,000 miles."

Anonymous, AZ (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The ride is stiff, not smooth and plush."

ROBERT D., NY (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"comfort is OK for a commuter - not a great road car!"

Anonymous, MO (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"a/c failing or not strong enough for FL hot sun."

- R., FL (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I purchased this car new and got a great deal on it. It came fully loaded, minus a navigation system and was far less than the Honda Accord I was looking at too, plus the Hyundai had the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. I have owned this vehicle for over 7 years and have not had any issues with it at all. It runs great and only has been in for routine maintenance. The vehicle is very comfortable, has plenty of power with the V6. One of the best cars I have ever owned."

Anonymous, MO (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Great car, good value. So far has been trouble free"

Anonymous, OH (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"We bought the car used, and it has been reliable and inexpensive to run."

Anonymous, MD (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"InAug.'o8 I paid $17,277 for my car. $200 was for the White paint. I think I got a very good deal."

MICHAEL E., AZ (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"mostly trouble free except for replacing emissions system. dealer experience was terrible. (for servicing the car)."

JAMES R., NY (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Bought it for 20K,out the door with 100K bumper to bumper warranty..only has 60K miles, but, never a problem..Fuel milage is lower than expected..However my average road speed is around 75 mph.."

STEPHEN G., CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I bought the Sonata because it was less than the comparable Toyota or Honda. However, its resale value has not help up as well as theirs. The 100000 mi. warranty also was a major factor in my decision"

Anonymous, CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"very good purchase, very reliable, low maintenance cost, great on the highway and in the city"

Anonymous, AL (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"warranty duration period was greater then others"

DONALD L., MD (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"for a 2009 V6 ...Hwy milage gets 33 MPG"

E N., AZ (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Compared to what other similar cars cost, the Sonata had more standard features and I was able to negotiate a price more than $4000 less than MSRP."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I bought it used from a rental car company and the only issue was that I needed a new battery."

CAROLYN S., CA (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I have 135,000 miles on the car and have nothing more than the recommended maintenance."

DAVID W., KS (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The manual transmission that I bought makes the Sonata a very peppy and responsive car. Plus, car dealers can't get rid of them and lower the price below used car value on KBB and Edmunds estimations."

WARREN L., TN (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I paid $11999 for this car in 2010 and it's been a good vehicle to drive. Not to many problems and reliable in our cold winters."

Anonymous, MB (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"At the time of purchase the price was much lower than the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry making it a great value. The new prices have since closed this gap"

LARRY R., FL (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I guess in 2009 car sales were slow, because I got this car for well under the sticker price without much haggling."

J B., NJ (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Maintain it well and it will last forever"

JESSICA H., AZ (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"I paid about 16,000 for this car new. It's been fairly reliable. It owes me nothing."

WALT G., NY (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

""Value proposition" has diminished since purchase. It's too noisy: Road/AC. A/C is minimally effective for city driving. Ergonomics: radio, lights, wipers are poor. Passenger visor is broken, rear window problems both sides, weather stripping lose and torn, trunk struts needed to be replaced, transmission is "jumpy" but no probs found. Windshield wipers innefective and noisy,"

ALAN B., FL (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"A lot of feachers for the price and very low maintenance cost to date"

KEN M., FL (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"many premium feature at relatively low price!"

Anonymous, MN (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"The value is incredible good."

GREG P., MO (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Very handsome styling. But should get rid of all shiny trim on dash; causes reflections on windshield & outside mirrors."

Anonymous, ON (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"generally pleasing looking car and nice lines"

JIM I., NB (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very roomy. Nice dynamics"

RON R., OH (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

LILLY T., TN (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"Although the leather/cloth combo seats have been good, the dashboard never looked has as good a style as my previous Toyota Camry."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Hyundai Sonata)

"nice modern lines, even 7 years later"
