Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

This version of the Sonata ranked among our top-rated family sedans. The ride is supple, yet composed. Handling is agile and responsive. The Sonata's swoopy, coupe-like styling comes with tolerable rear-seat room and visibility. The revised four-cylinder engine racked up impressive fuel economy of 27 mpg overall. On the other hand, complaints include noticeable road noise and inhibited rear-seat access due to the low roof line.

The Sonata Hybrid (which we also tested) is a far cry from the conventional Sonata. Although it gets better fuel economy than its non-hybrid doppelganger, the trade-offs in drivability, refinement and braking performance are too high. The car stumbles and hesitates as it makes the transition from electric to gas power, with occasional shakes and vibrations.

Anonymous, PA (2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, CT (2013 Hyundai Sonata Unsure Unsure)

“GPS has never worked properly. Dealer notified Hyundai, but there was never a response from Hyundai and dealer refused to do anything so issue remains. The thing though that is truly SERIOUS is that my car repeatedly had issues with the alarm system going off and not being able to disarm ed, so that the car dies and I have to have a tow company come. “Phone does not always pair with car. Dealer can't find problem nor duplicate it”

Michael D., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

“Phone pairing is inconsistent. Pair the phone and it works fine for a few days. Then, it doesn't work and the solution seems to be to delete the phone from the car's Bluetooth system and then re-establish the pairing. Very cumbersome”

Anonymous, GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

“The phone pairing would not "stick", that is, would not recognize the phone each time I entered the car. After a number of attempts, the dealership has now got the car to consistently recognize the phone, but it still will not access or recognize”
