Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Display screen freezes up

"Suddenly None of the console electronics worked. The speedometer wasn't even working. Honda kept the vehicle for 10 days. They took apart seemingly everything and put it back together and it started to work again. When they drove it out to the lot it failed again. One of the mechanics even drove it home each night to figure it out. Finally when they put it back together it worked and has since. They guessed that it was a 'loose wire'."

I have turned the system off and turned it back on and some times this still does not work. Honda dealer says if they can't make it happen then they won't replace the system. "halfway through a 5-hour highway drive, the entire display - both screens - went blank (as if I had turned off the car). After a few seconds, the displays started back up with the same screens that appear when you start the car. Mechanically, the car (engine, transmission, etc.) was fine. Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone pairing for Pandora and internet radio (such as iHeart Radio) is temperamental; it may take three tries at first to get it to function correctly. If cell signal is disrupted, such as going through a tunnel, it usually will not re-establish pairing once the signal comes back. "Guide pins in calipers corroded quickly even when properly lubricated, causing my brake calipers to fail to fully retract the brake pads. The pads wore unevenly, they scored the rotors and the caliper pistons rusted more than I felt safe. I ended up replacing the pads, rotors and calipers on the rear of the Accord, along with the guide pins. Anonymous, (2013 Honda Accord LX Unsure)

"Rear brakes are notoriously problematic on Accords. The caliper pins and pads tend to stick (especially after winter) and then the pads wear out since one pad drags or they don't retract. "At 60000 miles both rear calipers were seized and required a replacement of both calipers, pads, resurfacing of rotors and brake fluid flush. 1700$ dollars for this fix. What was especially interesting was that the only reason I thought something was wrong was it took significant movement of the parking brake to set the brake. Upon inspection, they indicated that the left was totally seized and the right was not moving correctly. This vehicle had just recently been in for a oil change - with a comprehensive safety inspection- and no issues were found. Again, I am shocked that on a CPO vehicle, with 60000 miles, I am paying 1700 for a full brake replacement on the rear."

"normal brake wear"

Anonymous, FL (2013 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Honda vehicles are prone to experiencing brake pad wear as a result of the brake pads binding in the caliper slots due to corrosion build up. This results in the brake pad not retracting from the rotor when the brakes are released and, as a result, the pad wears prematurely and may result in scoring the rotor if the pads are not replaced before the pad wears down to the steel backing plate. I replaced the brake pads myself and paid particular attention to making sure the new pads moved freely in the caliper slots by grinding the ears of the pads to open up the clearance and using Honda's recommended anti-seize lubricant on the pad ears which slide in the caliper slots."

"I took the Accord to the Honda dealer because there was a squeaking or scratching sound when driving the car. Honda looked at it and said they could not find the cause. They said they would have to have the vehicle left with them three or four days so they could drive it around to diagnose the problem. I took the Accord to a trusted mechanic other than Honda and left it with them. 1.5 hours later they called me and told me it was the front brake pads that needed replacing. They put new pads on and turned the rotors and everything was fine. Why couldn't Honda dealer figure that out?"

"car was not starting consistently as it always had in the past. Took it to dealer, and it was the starter. I always thought starters failed on much older cars. Cost for new starter was $912 with tax. I went online and found a public forum online indicating this is a problem with this year and model Honda. Said Honda is aware of it but won't do a recall. $912 really was a hardship for me, and I will not be as confident that Honda is reliable in the future. I don't regret buying this car because I got it from estate for great price, and was so happy at the time, as I had done my research and was debating between Toyota, Ford Fusion or Honda Accord. What really worries me, also, is how long this new starter will last? Has Honda fixed the design flaw?"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Honda Accord)

"The starter on our 2013 Honda accord failed at approximately 60,000 miles. The car has a push button start and we would hit the button and sometimes it wouldn't start. Sometimes we would try 5 or more times before starting. It eventually completely failed and we had to replace it - over $700."

"When I pushed the START button, it would immediately turn off. Advised to wait 10 second and try again, I could get the car to start. After about three weeks of this, I took it to the dealer. The service writer either misunderstood the problem I described or didn't attend to it. They checked the battery, said it was all right, and returned the car to me. The problem continued. I called the service director, who asked me to bring it in and leave it overnight. The next morning I got a call that it needed a new starter. Cost: $555. they had submitted data to Honda and Honda would absorb $500 if I would pay $55. I accepted. It's taken a month for me to accept that the car is reliable again; I've just reached that point. Overall I am satisfied with the way the dealer and Honda handled the situation."

At fist was intermittent, then was frequent but would finally started after repeated pushes of the buttom. Finally, didn't respond at all. This happened when car was 49 month old and had about 52,000 miles. Not what I expected from Honda. Company could have cared less as could the dealer."

Nancy K., VA (2013 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

William P., MI (2013 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The starter would not work. Usually, after repeated attempts, it would start. The starter was replaced in December 2017 for $670."

Fred H., AL (2013 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"About six months ago, I went to start the car and instead of it starting heard a grinding sound. Much like turning the ignition to start when the car is already started. This happened three times in a row, then started normally the fourth try. Took it to a service station and they found nothing. A few weeks later it happened again, then on the second try started normally. Took it to the Honda dealer and they could not find anything wrong with it. They mentioned something about a service bulletin addressing starter issues in Accords. They said they would be reluctant to replace a starter because of the cost, not knowing for sure that this was the issue. So for the last few months, this problem happens occasionally, but has always started in a try or two. I've been waiting for the day it leaves me stranded and someone will finally fix the problem."

"Keyless entry system had a warning light when the car was purchased, which prevented the keyless entry from working, and occasionally caused the car to fail to start. Because we used Carvana, we used the bumper to bumper warranty and brought to dealer. They "fixed it" twice, only to have me get in the car and the same problem occurred. The third time, I took it to another dealership, explained what had been done, and what the symptoms were. They asked if I had a budget, I explained about the war"

"Despite a new battery the keyless entry warning light indicates batter signal is poor"

"Keyless Entry stopped working due to a failure of the relay box. Was replaced under warranty. There was a TSB documenting the known issue of failure of this part"

Gregory P., NJ (2013 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The rear driver side door does not always unlock/lock with key fob. This is annoying because the car alarm will not arm until all doors are locked, and I have to manually lock that door when electronic lock is not functioning correctly."

Scott W., VA (2013 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"On two occasions the keyless entry system required using the key to unlock and lock the car. Replacing the battery did not correct the problem. In both situations the weather was inclement with rain for a few days. Once the weather dried up the keyless system returned to normal, but the alarm system was only operating sporadically."

"Problem with the car not receiving signal from the keyless fob. Battery in fob is not the issue. It's something in the car's electronics. Keeps signaling that the battery is about to die despite putting in a new battery several times in a day."
