Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Honda Accord owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"my backup camera stopped working suddenly. It was not repairable and cost $600 to replace which I thought was excessive. Whoever supplied the camera should have provided a longer warranty. It seems to me that failing after 4 years was not acceptable."

R P., MD (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"My backup camera stopped working altogether out of the blue a couple of months ago. Luckily, I had purchased the extended warranty on this car, but I still had a $100. deductible. I would have been extremely upset if I had to pay full price for replacing a pretty new back-up camera, but this is just annoying and worrisome. Honda's reliability is slipping, in our opinion We currently own my 2014 Accord, my husband's 2012 Civic and my son's 2013 Pilot. The Civic hasn't been as much trouble but seems cheaper and less well-made than Honda of the past. We won't be buying any more Hondas."

Laura M., KY (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"After rain or hyumid conditions the camera image is extremely blurry to the point that it can not be relied on"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Voice control commands

"The voice recognition is terrible in this vehicle - I speak loudly and clearly and with no accent (people tell me this all the time). I previously had a 2008 Nissan Altima that worked well with voice recognition, but I have been so disappointed in Honda's execution of their infotainment system. It is buggy, annoying, and I simply gave up trying to get it to recognize what I am saying. Even the icons for the phone controls on the steering wheel are not intuitive and hard to understand. I just press buttons until something works (and I work in IT, so I can figure things out). I am considering the Honda Ridgeline truck only because it has Apple Carplay which I hope is better than the garbage stock software on Honda's infotainment system. I never thought that the infotainment system in a vehicle would be one of my TOP considerations when buying a new vehicle, but it will be from now on."

Calipers

"Calipers seized on LR in Nov. 2017 and wore down pads which had to be replaced. That made brake pedal feel soft. Cost:$308. Break Pedal went soft in July 2018. Dealer said no problem. Went to different shop. found inner pads had seized on 3 of the 4 wheels. They were freed and lubricated. Pedal still sunk when held with moderate pressure. Master cylinder ports were individually blocked to identify source of problem. Anti-lock OK. Blocking 1 port cut pedal travel in half for both ports. Cause not identified."

The dealer and the Honda Warranty office became more flexible when I asked a) for the return of all replaced parts b) I noted that I was a member of the Automotive Protective Association, which provides the use of a lawyer and an automotive mechanic to intervene when necessary. As well I requested a meeting with the Shop Manager. I was willing to come to this meeting with a copy of my extended warranty and my full service record. The next morning my Serviced Rep, with the head of the dealer's extended warranty department, got Honda to honour its extended warranty contract. I was told that only a small percentage of claimants get their full extended warranty coverage as they back off pursuing their claims after the first rejection."

The service representative told me that because it had not been tightened for so long I needed new calipers, rotors, and disks. I don't see this as a failure of the vehicle so much as a miss by the service department at the dealer; when asked if they don't check the hand brake cable regularly, I was told that it depended on the individual conducting the service check. Every two years I had break jobs which included brake pad replacement and resurfacing the rotors. I also had the brake oil replaced. However, I still constantly feel the pulsating vibration when ever I apply the brakes. I told the Honda technician at my local Honda dealership about the pulsating/vibration when I apply my brakes and he told me it is normal in Honda Accords and that I should have my rotors resurfaced at least yearly. very costly. My total out of pocket cost $ ~500 at Honda dealer."

Problem has worsened - may start on first push, but sometimes takes many pushes in combination with brake release and depressing or just pushing without touching the brake - then braking and pushing. Very intermittent in terms of how many pushes - sometimes just a couple, sometime 10 or more!"

"A known defect with the starter that wasn't recalled by Honda (found out at the dealer who told me to file a dispute with Honda)and when it started on our vehicle we were four months past the factory warranty and I had to file a dispute with Honda and they eventually replaced the starter and I had to pay a hundred dollars out of my pocket for this repair. Left a bad taste in my mouth because if it had started four months earlier they would have covered the repair at no cost and they new the starter was defective but did nothing about it. This will make me go in favor of another automobile manufacture in the future if everything else comes out comparable."

"Water would leak into trunk only when actively opening trunk and would leak in same spot on trunk floor. Took to Honda they could not find leak. They said water was ran but no leak evidenced. I told them only leaks when actively open trunk they did not seem to understand. Returned to dealer a couple of times with no success. Finally I removed trunk lid liner and carefully checked whenever it rained which in Oregon is a lot. I found leak coming from trunk camera. Had to take car in for ATS Actuator issue so told them to also check camera leak. Honda had car for 4 rainy days. At pickup told me could not find leak. So I had service person stand by when they returned my car and I opened trunk. Sure enough trunk lid leaked upon actively opening at same spot I noticed before. Service person could not deny leak. I also had them physically feel water around camera area. They kept car to fix now that problem area was located. Picked up. Not fixed. Returned car to fix agian and finally repaired correctly. Hate excuses well water leaks are hard to find. I found it easily. Luckily was still on warranty or would of cost me hundreds of $$$. Accords just dont have reliablity and accountability"

Wind noise

"Both our Hondas, the Accord and the Odyssey, have a problem with noise. It is as though there is none or little insulation in the floor of both cars. When we drive on the interstate we can barely hear the CD player or the radio, and sometimes we have trouble hearing each other talk because the noise level is so loud from the road below us. We tried purchasing tires that are rated excellent for getting rid of road noise, but it did not help in either car. Honda needs to work on insulating their cars better, especially the floorboard area. Another complaint with these cars is that the underside of the cars hangs down too far in the front, under the bumper, and if you drive over a fairly large bump, it dislodges the underside of the car in the front, and it drags the ground until you get them to fix it."

This is barely visible right now, but it is getting slowly worse and I anticipate it will be a large paint issue in a couple of years. Overall, a minor defect that is not safety or performance related. But for me, a lifelong Honda fan, this was a huge disappointment and a huge surprise. "Little bit surprised to have strut failure on driver side. This is 4th Accord owned since 1987, and first to have any issue with at all. All others have lived well into the 150 K miles range"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The front end started making a clunking noise. I researched it, and found that Honda had issued a TSB regarding the problem. The issue was simple. A locking nut would work loose, causing the strut to not be anchored firmly, and make the noise. The fix was simple -- they would replace the locknut with an improved nut. So I made an appointment with the Fort Myers FL Honda dealer to have that done. To my amazement, they wanted to charge me about $100; this for something that Honda admitted being defective. And on a car that had only about 14,000 miles on it. I declined to have them repair it. I then contacted American Honda, telling them I was a loyal 35-year customer, who had owned 9 Hondas, and that they should order the dealer to make the repair at no cost. They said no, even though there was a TSB, and they admitted the original design was defective, they hid behind the "out of warranty" excuse. So I challenged them, saying did they want to lose my future business over a $10 repair; if they didn't do the honorable thing, I'd never buy another Honda. Again, to my amazement, they said they didn't care. Several months later, I'm still astounded that Honda, known for customer service, blew me off. And was OK with having a potentially unsafe vehicle out there (with a potentiality catastrophic failure mode), as a potential lawsuit. So guess what? I'll never buy another Honda. Too bad for them. And by the way, I fixed the problem myself in a few minutes. So they've lost a loyal customer over essentially nothing. OH well."

"In short, the nut on top the the strut down came off. I tried fixing it, but could find were the problem was coming from. I even changed the brakes, thinking it might be coming from there. It nut is under a rubber/ plastic cap, that's why I couldn't find it. Costed $110 to fix."

Apparently my rear springs were sagging to much which threw my wheel alignement off causing cupping on my tires which caused the hum. "Didn't know the oil leak existed until mechanic showed me when car was placed on lift. As car was over 3 yrs. old (2014), I was told it was no longer under warranty by Honda and paid out of pocket for repairs."

"Smelled burning oil while driving. Opened hood. Oil everywhere. Checked dipstick. Near empty. Brought to dealer for repair."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Excessive oil consumption (>1qt/1000mi) cause undetermined. Honda says normal. Driven through 3 oil changes before Honda revealed 2.5 qt loss between changes. Noise on starting caused starter replacement under warranty, VTC replacement under warranty, now resolved with exact cause still undetermined. Unknown TBD engine damage from driving with low oil during first 35,000 miles."

"Replaced valve cover gasket."

Anonymous, MS (2014 Honda Accord LX-S 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Twice in the past 9 months, the oil pressure light came on. I checked the dipstick; the oil level was low. According to the car, I still had 15% oil-life before I was due for an oil change/maintenance (the read-out was 30%; I get the car serviced at 15% oil-life). The oil leak was not severe, but was quite concerning, since the manual says not to drive it when the light comes on and the dealership says not to put any oil into it."

"Seized up occasionally. Needed to replace under warranty. Carnot leaking oil, rather using oil. Reason yet to be determined. They say this is a new 4 cyi for Honda in 2014. That they had issues with older models"

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Almost since purchase, this transmission has been difficult to shift into 3rd gear. It's also sometimes tough to shift 1-2 or 3-2, but 3rd (upshifting or downshifting) is the worst. I have multiple complaints about this to the dealer but they claim it's 'normal'. Now that the car is out of warranty, I'm planning to have the whole transmission rebuilt."

Derek G., OH (2014 Honda Accord Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Synchros for 2nd and 3rd gear produce extremely notchy shifting and can occasionally prevent shifting. The dealer has repeatedly said the shifting effort and feel is normal. This has been going on since roughly 15,000 - 20,000 miles. Honda replaced the transmission fluid which helped for a short time, but the problem has resurfaced and continues to make shifting difficult."

Derek G., OH (2014 Honda Accord Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Vehicle became very difficult to drive. It seemed to always be searching for the right gear. Honda upgraded the software and flushed the transmission fluid. Problem is now 100% fixed."

"Shifts are very hard, and has on several occassions stalled out completely, vehicle loses all power"

Slipping transmission

"At times, the car is reluctant to move out of the garage, and strains to move, as though the tranny was slipping or the brake was engaged."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The Transmission on my car consistently slips with rough shifting and even caused my low tire pressure light to turn on. I brought vehicle to Honda Dealership where Honda repair technician said no default codes was shown on computer but the technician did take it out for a test drive where he felt the transmission slipping with rough shifting several times during his test drive. Technician took 3 pictures of the transmission and send them to the Honda tech line where they reviewed and said nothing is wrong with my transmission. Said it was normal. I believe that it is not normal and never experienced it before in any previous Hondas I owned. Honda wont do anything about it. I constantly experience the transmission problem with no repairs offered or suggested by Honda as of today. My starter went out, drive shaft leaked oil and replaced, my engine leaked oil and had my engine gasket replaced, my brakes constantly pulsate/vibrate even after brae jobs and my passenger window had to be repaired because it got stuck and wouldn't close. Now I'm worried about another big costly repair $3,000 to $4,500 to replace the transmission. My 2014 Honda Accord is a lemon with so many major costly problems with it. Honda lost me as a 25 year loyal customer as their vehicle reliability and quality deteriorated over time."

Keith K., TX (2014 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Doors or sliding doors

"Trunk door closes down suddenly could hit and injure people in the back with the lock part while getting things in out of the trunk. I owned 4 new cars only this honda accord has this safety issue and the car easily damage if it goes over a pot hole. Dealerships said this is normal by manufacturer standard. Please inform car makers for a recall before someone gets hurt. Thank you."

"Keyless entry failed, repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear door actuators were repaired during the 36K warranty. After that warranty expired, all 4 door actuators were failing and I had to use a key on the front door to get inside my car. That was very inconvenient when I was out in freezing rain and the key hole was frozen over. I complained to Honda USA and they agreed to replace all 4 door actuators. 20,000 miles later 1 door actuator does not work and another 1 intemittantly works. The dealer wants around $300 per door to fix it. I just unlock/lock those doors manually at each door. The only way I know whether all 4 doors are locked when I leave my car is to press the button on the outside of the drivers' door and if it beeps, I know all 4 are locked. If it doesn't beep, I go around and check all 4 doors to find which ones didn't lock. My Honda dealer said I am their only customer who continues to have door actuator problems. The door actuator problems are safety problems since people could enter your car at any intersection (when the actuator doesn't lock). To me, that is a serious problem. Since it is intermittent and 6 actuators have been replaced, it is either an engineering problem or a part that is not manufactured to specifications. I have a 2003 Accord that didn't develop a door actuator problem until it had 350,000 miles on it. I had the LDW and FCW checked several times while under warranty and it would work better for a week or 2 and then give false readings about LDW and FCW being activated. LDW falses 75% of the time, so I have turned off that feature. The FCW is way too sensitive and it falses about 50% of the time. FCW will alert with a light and beeps even when I am the only person or vehicle within a mile. I wish I could turn it off. I think Honda rushed to get these safety features on their vehicles and did not do enough testing. Honda USA paid to have the LDW and FCW checked when the door actuators were replaced, but once again, it only helped for a week or two. The emergency trunk release handle inside the trunk started rattling around 45,000 miles (after the warranty expired). If the radio is on, it doesn't bother me. The dealer doesn't have a fix for it since it was made with plastic and engineered poorly. Other than those 3 problems, I really like my Accord. I have owned 3 Accords a CRV and an Odyssey and I would say this Accord is the most frustrating. Until 2019, I had three Hondas. I replaced one with a Subaru and couldn't even consider a CRV because of the oil dilution problem. I had two friends in the State of Texas that had that problem with their CRVs and Honda USA denied there was a problem and then eventually extended the warranty by 1 year. A lot of good that will do when those CRVs get to 100,000 miles or more. I will look seriously at Subarus to eventually replace my 2 Accords. I doubt I will ever buy another Honda unless they can improve their quality to what it was during the first decade of the 2000s."

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Catalytic converter

"Last summer, I heard a consistent whiny rattling when accelerating and assumed it was a muffler issue. The Honda dealership where I had it repaired said it was a catalytic converter, which was barely still under warranty. They replaced it, but there was immediately an issue with the work. They re-fixed the catalytic converter, but a couple months later the noises returned and have been grinding me ever since."
