Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. Road Test

Honda took a big gamble with its wholesale overhaul of the popular Accord midsized sedan. The redesign includes the addition of new turbocharged engines, an available hybrid powertrain, comprehensive changes to the control layout, and standard crash-avoidance features, all wrapped in an attractive, coupe-like body.

Some of the Accord's goodness stems from its 192-hp, 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) works well but, as with many CVTs, it exacerbates engine noise during high power demands, when the driver steps on it. The combination delivered ample power in our EX sedan. The Accord is one of the quickest cars in its class, yet it averages an excellent 31 mpg overall, a 1-mpg improvement over the previous Accord four-cylinder.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2018 Honda Accord owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"Too complicated to use!"

Bryce H., KS (2018 Honda Accord EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Tends to disconnect and I have gone through 3 USB cords. Most of the issues I believe are due to the Samsung phone."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Apple CarPlay

"Apple Car Play quit working a couple months after getting the car. It is a Honda software problem that Honda promises to fix. So far I am still waiting for a fix. They were able to provide a temporary fix that is still working for me."

Anonymous, TX (2018 Honda Accord EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"CarPlay must be reset to factory settings every month or so to get it to work."

Robert P., CA (2018 Honda Accord Sport 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Apple Car Play just stops working every so often. We have returned the car to the dealership 4 times hoping for a fix, but as yet, none exists. The battery must be disconnected and left that way for a few minutes, then reconnected. Then the car has to be run long enough to reinitialize (5-10 minutes), or else the system goes utterly nuts, displaying false errors and warnings."

Lydia D., WI (2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The upgrade to iOS 11.2.5 broke the CarPlay functionality. It is not clear if this was a Honda problem or an Apple problem (and I suspect the latter because owners of other car brands were also reporting issues). I was eventually able to fix the problem myself by attempting different setting configurations on my iPhone (and it was nothing, in the end, recommended by Apple). It was a frustrating experience and the impression I was left with was that Apple cared very little about supporting CarPlay."

Anonymous, WA (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"when I connect the phone to the cable the Apple Play button does not indicate connected every time. I have to disconnect and reconnect the cable a few times to get it to work. Eventually I do get connected, just frustrating."

"March 2020. Driving home from FL I lost all use of Apple CarPlay. Repaired by dealer and was told the Bluetooth needed an update."

Anonymous, (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The dealer claimed that it was caused by not using an actual Apple brand cord to attach the phone. It completely ruined the Carplay system"

Robert B., NC (2018 Honda Accord Sport 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Periodically the car is unable to recognise/connect with my iPhone when it is connected via its cord to usb. I've tried known to be good connecting cords, tried an alternative usb port and tried turning off & on the display. The iPhone had recognized my face and was unlocked."

"backup camera distance grid does not show up periodically"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Honda Accord Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, MD (2018 Honda Accord Sport 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"If you put car in reverse before system is fully loaded back up camera controls will not work and radio cuts out. Honda could not fix"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The problem happened twice about a year ago in 2019. I don't remember the details but it seemed to be something with the electronics. The dealer was not able to help because they did not witness the problem which was intermittent. It did not inspire confidence in the car but I have not seen this problem in about 9 months."

Anonymous, NC (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"camera went out. honda replaced free."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Since the recall software update for the camera system if I put the car in reverse to backup, before the Honda logo shows up on the screen, the backup camera shows no backup lines and reboots the whole computer system as soon as it goes out of reverse. I took it to Honda and called the local Honda rep and they said this is normal because its a computer and I'm not letting it boot up. I shouldn't have to wait to backup with out crashing the computer. This is the main reason I'm not sure the next car will be a Honda."

Mark M., PA (2018 Honda Accord EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Grid did not always display on screen."

Display screen freezes up

"onboard comoyter reboot by dealer"

Anonymous, NE (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"For whatever reason the display screen will freeze, and you cannot change any of the screen options!"

Anonymous, PA (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The screen freezes up occassionally but when I put the car in reverse the camera operates. I have to stop the car and turn off the engine, wait a minute, then restart the car and it usually the screen returns to a normal mode."

Charles L., IN (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"When starting the car, the display should boot up within seconds, much like your phone or tablet. Three times in less than 3 months the display took about 5 minutes before booting up."

Anonymous, CA (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My car was new with only 3200 miles driven, and the display would randomly go blank and have to restart completely, this happened on six occasions in two months. Which caused the navigation and phone system to be inaccessible while rebooting. I contacted Honda and took the vehicle to the dealer three separate times and it was never resolved because the dealer could not replicate the same issue."

Anonymous, (2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"When turning on the car and putting it in reverse the display system and radio will turn off and restart. Backup camera will still display but with no guide lines. Will restart in 10-30 seconds. Only happens 15% of the time. Took it to the dealer and they were not aware of existing issues and were not able to fix it."

Anonymous, (2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This is the second unit in the car. Periodically the screen goes blank and I lose radio, navigation, back-up and all functions attached to the infotainment system. It resets itself most of the time and occasionally I have to stop, shut the motor off, restart and the system reboots."

Anonymous, NS (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"see previous comment"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The audio/touch screen system would periodically go blank and reboot. The dealership improved it by a software update. It seems to be related to Apple CarPlay. It now rarely does it but the system will occasionally reboot."

Anonymous, (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The problem began on January 2020. Until May 10th 2020, the screen has gone blank approximately 15 times. It goes blank then comes back on by itself. Most of the time, when it comes back on everything is back to normal. A few times, Apple Car Play does not function."

Anonymous, ON (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Very, very occasionally after starting the car, the display screen will be blank. The car is completely driveable. I just am not able to access things like the radio. After turning the car off and then restarting, the display screen will be fine. Because this is so intermittent (probably 1% of starts), and does not follow a pattern, it appears to be a software glitch that the dealer is not able to address."

Anonymous, NC (2018 Honda Accord EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The display screen goes blank after starting the car about 1% of the time. Once the car is turned off, the display functions normally again."

E H., NC (2018 Honda Accord EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Display screen goes blank and will take about 10 seconds to restart. Dealer updates have not resolved problem. I’m told Honda is aware of the problem and is “working on a fix”."

Dale S., UT (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Display screen goes completely blank unable to set alarm and trunk is unable to be opened when this happens no manual way on this car to open trunk when this happens never had this on an accord and have driven them for over 25 years this is my last accord seating is terrible car is to low and the passenger seat has no control to raise the seat and my wife has hurt her back due to this drove a 2013 Honda Accord sport for four and a half years on lease and liked the car the engineers at Honda shoild be ashamed of themselves they had great cars up to 2017 but this 2018 is terrible. There is just to much electronics on this car and the people that put this vehicle together should know why they are not selling Honda Accord sports as I have read that a lot of people do not like this vehicle. I have leased my accords from the same dealership for over 25 years but will not lease an accord in the future when this lease is up. I will look at the crv and. hope they have not ruined it as they have with the accord sport."

Anonymous, FL (2018 Honda Accord Sport 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"After ~12 month's use the display screen infrequently goes blank stopping music, FM, USB or my iPhone is being used. I estimate it has occurred about 6 times."

Dan L., PA (2018 Honda Accord Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Intermittently resets. It's annoying but seems harmless. The one downside is you're cut off from any info that may have come from that device. Everything else seems to work fine. It doesn't happen every time I drive but it does happen at least monthly. Wish it would be addressed. This seems to be a known issue."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl hybrid)

"While driving on long trips the infotainment system goes blank, so that there is no radio, navigation system. Eventually comes back on but progressively this became more frequent and the system did not automatically reboot until the car was stopped and restarted."

Lionel D., NS (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"USB interface sometimes crashing, disconnecting the apple carplay requiring disconnect and reconnect."

Bryce H., KS (2018 Honda Accord EX 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My older generation IPOD would not operate properly in this vehicle. I had to purchase a new IPOD which operated properly most of the time. After a few software updates, I have not experienced any further problems with connectivity."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The system doesn't recognize my IPod or Samsung Smart phone even when it has been connected all along. I have to unconnect the device then plug it back in to make it work. Bluetooth shows it's on but the system will not answer an incoming call or make an out going call. Very frustrating."

Charles L., IN (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Very elaborate sound system but very poor inputs for that system. No CD/DVD player. Have to use Lossy USB thumb drive or Poor FM signals. Will not subscribe to Sirius and pay them for poor choices in music and then pay for the internet service/cell service to use it."

Anonymous, MA (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The "voice" that provides turn by turn instructions come on at random even when it is set to be silent. This can happen any time, at start up, during a trip, and sometimes if I adjust the radio volume. This is both annoying and somewhat dangerous since the control to adjust or shut off the voice requires going through four screens so it is hard to do while driving. I reported this to the dealer several times but since it is hard to rerproduce they were skeptical. Finally after getting an error code that they were able to access, I was told that the problem was known but required an software update from the GPS supplier but it has never been made available. The in dash GPS is not made by Honda, but a third party. While is says that it is a Garmin, the dealer said that there is a different supplier that would need to do the update. I have pretty much given up on getting it fixed. Since the rest of the car has been absolutely reliable I have chosen to live with it until I can purchase another car."

Anonymous, MA (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Dealer had to reboot the system"

Anonymous, NC (2018 Honda Accord Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It never works. When I use it, I also use my phone. The maps show the car driving on a lake, on streets that I'm not driving on, and has sent me in circles. The service people say there's nothing wrong with it. The problem is always with the satellite. Big waste of money."

"GPS would either stop communicating and displaying on the Heads-up display & dashboard, *or* GPS screen would be totally black saying no database found."

Steven G., MI (2018 Honda Accord Touring 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Occasionally GPS display goes blank with a status of unable to load database and the compass stops displaying on the Heads Up Display too. "The System has on several occasions, canceled out giving me a beep while driving, nearly causing an accident. then in an attempt to reactivate the ACC the system will give an error. Incline to steep to activate Cruise. keep in mind i'm on a plainly flat Road, with no incline. also on may occasions the system will tell me the speed limit is 100 MPH ( i have a photo of it) when I don't know anywhere in the USA where the speed limit is 100 mph. that's more of a nuisance, than a real issue that the cruise cancels out while driving."

Samuel F., NJ (2018 Honda Accord EX-L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Lane keep assist is a potentially dangerous system. It will follow the road nicely for a while (I never take my hands off of the wheel), than it will stop. Yes I understand the road will change, but a beep is needed. There is a Lane symbol on the display but while driving it's impossible to look at this. also the indicator isn't always accurate. It will indicate a lane departure warning after it has exceeded the lane boundaries, potentially causing and accident. (that's why I never take my hands off the wheel). if the system is on but not engaged it will still vibrate the wheel and make it difficult to steer on my own. If I choose not to use the system, by turning the system off than I Lose ACC as well as LKAS, which is counter intuitive. I should be able to use one without the other."

Thing I cannot believe is that this car has no manual control in a situation like this to get in to the trunk I guess the Honda engineers never figured this out by not putting a manual control on the sport to get in the trunk if this happened.
