Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“The Sonata handles very well, but at high speeds it tends to shake a little. It accelerates well.”

DEBORAH F., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Handling was a real issue initially because I had driven a Corolla 146,000 miles. The Hyundai has a strut when you look over your right shoulder to see if traffic is coming from the rear. It does not have the same view as the Corolla and I darn near swiped a few cars until I learned! Oddly enough, I had the same problem when I test drove the car, but attributed it to paying more attention to the dashboard and the salesman..”

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“handling and comfort”

TRUDY H., ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“this car is very quick - off the line acceleration is quick. compared with other sedans, this one is 4 cyl and puts out almost 200hp!!”

ROY A., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Love the acceleration and handling but it doesn't have good visibility when backing, parking and sometimes turning, so that I occasionally hit a curb or don't see dangers when I back up.”

CHRISTINE L., VA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Handling and acceleration are good. The back window size is smaller than our previous cars and so driving this car is not as easy.”

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Very responsive engine for a four cylinder. Great handling.”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Still has hard riding on rough pavements”

PAUL J., MN (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Noisy when driving in traffic”

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I absolutely love the 274 HP the 2.0T outputs!! At the same time I achieved 36 MPG on my 460 mile trip on the I90 to South Bend!”

JAMES T., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Acceleration is good. Handling is bad. Electronic Power Steering over-reacts at interstate speeds. Too much effort to keep it going straight. This is a known issue for which Hyundai is taking no action. Long drives are tiresome and stressful. I have gotten somewhat use to it but I still don't like it.”

CHARLES A., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Don't think the tires that came with the car are very good. Had problems with them (tread too thin?) and am currently shopping for a new set. Also, the size of them are not most popular and I have a choice of only one kind.”

ELLEN R., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Peppy but gas mileage suffers but I had a hybrid Camry before so I guess I prefer good mileage over acceleration”

MICHAEL B., SC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“car is sluggish with 2 people and air conditioning on”

L C., GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Reliable”

ELIZABETH E., NC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Wonder road car. Very good for city traffic an highway. Best riding car I've ever owned.”

GEOFFREY B., TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“great pickup acceleration with the 4 cylinder”

F S., NJ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Steering and handling is looser than I like”

Anonymous, VA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“This car has good handling and a very smooth ride.”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The steering on this car is horrible. It is very difficult to drive in a straight line as we find ourselves constantly correcting to stay in the lane. Seems to be too much "play" in the steering as it is very loose. Dealer could not fix problem (front end and tires were in great shape) but admitted it was a known issue with Hyundai. I believe this is a serious safety issue and it is exhausting to drive long distances while I am constantly fighting to drive in a straight line.”

TIM W., MO (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Love the acceleration, good gas mileage,”

Anonymous, GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“For a 4 cylinder car it has great pick up when I need it. It also has a very good turning radius.”

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Great take off and handling. Taking it out of ECO mode add extra boost and more precise handling.”

KEITH V., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Steering is a little vague and the handling could be tighter all around.”

JOHN K., NJ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I have owned turbo engine autos in the past (Saab, Mazda) and when this Hyundai Sonata was available with a turbo I-4 I was excited. I compared it to the relatively new Hyundai hybrid engine since I wanted fuel economy, but the lack of power-on-demand in the hybrid sold me ... again...on the turbo. And I am getting 36-37 mpg on the highway which is pretty damn good in my book.”

STEVEN S., MO (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“very fast 2.0 turbo”

JAMES J., ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“For my use the car does not have the get up and go I prefer. A 6 cylinder would be better. I go a lot of freeway driving and big city driving so acceleration is needed. The handling in snow is not what I'm used to. New tires helped but the car is just lighter so it doesn't hold the road as well as the Grand Prix”

DARLENE B., WI (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“All the weight is in the front end the brakes and tires wear excessively and tires need to be constantly rotated The original tires kept getting leaks after 20K miles so I put on a new set and that stopped, but they still need to be rotated every other oil change (7K miles).”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Exceptional acceleration and handling; even in adverse weather conditions, e.g., torrential rain, I have never for a minute felt unsafe.”

L O., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The steering seems 'twitchy' and has been so since the beginning. The dealer could find nothing wrong.”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Style, comfortable”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The car can accelerate to highway speed even on the uphill ramps. When four lanes of traffic are barreling down on me, it helps raise the comfort factor.”

PAUL M., TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“great power acceleration, thanks to the 2.0 liter turbo. Also great gas mileage on a trip with air conditioning, getting from 35 to 38 mpg. around town we get about 23 mpg.”

MICHAEL D., GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Good accleration and handles well.”

Anonymous, PA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Very poor winter auto, too light or tires too wide. Looses traction, and gets stuck in snow easily, Also snow/ice builds up in wheel wells to the point that affects steering.”

STEVE F., MN (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“My wife loves it. I bump my head every time a get in. I contend that the internal computer controls acceleration and deceleration when in slow traffic. I do not like that it seems to speed up as I want to go into a turn slowly”

ARNO G., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Acceleration and handling are surprisingly good for a large sedan at this price. Fuel economy is disappointing for city driving.”

MICHAEL H., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Love the car overall, but I am not a big fan of the low profile tires which can make you feel the road imperfections a little too much at times and are not great in snow.”

LARRY J., NJ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Not necessarily driving, but a note that I received an Extended Warranty Notification from Hyundai stating my car is within a group of Sonata vehicles (2011-2014 made in Alabama) with possible rod bearing related issues. Here is a copy of the reason: Hyundai Motor America has decided to extend the warranty for the engine's "short block" assembly (consisting of the engine block, crankshaft and bearings, connecting rods and bearings, and pistons) on 2011-2014 Sonatas manufactured at Hyundai Motor”

TOM T., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Has lots of acceleration power, lots of room in the rear seat.”

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The driver's seat is automated. The passenger seat is not. The driver's seat is much more comfortable than the passenger's.”

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Road noise is bad”

Anonymous, GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“1. The dashboard is confusing in some of the operations. 2. The passenger seat is too low and can not be raised. 3. The GPS could be improved.”

RICHARD D., TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The stiff ride makes the car unpleasant over rough and bumpy roads.”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Passenger seat is 3" lower than driver's seat, which is a power seat. Passenger's seat is definitely too low to prevent adequate visibility for a person of average height. In order to remedy this situation the cost is prohibitively high.”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Passenger seat not that comfortable.”

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The heat and A/C takes time to "kick in" if idling while warming up the car when starting. It usually takes acceleration on a main road to have the heat and A/C make the car comfortable.”

MAREN M., VA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The seats are a bit uncomfortable and the "Leather trimmed " is a waste, either cover them in leather or a high quality Pleather. Otherwise a great car for the money.”

PETER S., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“cabin noise could be improved on.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“road noise”

Anonymous, MN (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

ANDREW S., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Passenger headrest is very uncomfortable due to the angle of it.”

Anonymous, MD (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Bad: doors have developed rattles and vibration with sound system engaged”

Anonymous, UT (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Road noise is a little higher than in many cars.”

Anonymous, IN (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Excessive road noise for a "Limited" Sonata. Everything else is ok.”

J B., MD (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Front passenger seat sits too low. No way to raise it.”

Anonymous, CO (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Comfortable seats, but leather wears a bit at seams. Climate control operates well. Noise is relatively low, but not always over cement highways at high speed. Comfortable ride.”

VITO P., OH (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I am 5ft 6 and I find the sonata seats to be very uncomfortable. I am 34 years of age and never had any major back problems. Whenever I am driving this car I feel pain mostly in my lower back.”

ASHISH O., TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Road noise even with Brand new tires. BFGoodrich's.”

RICHARD W., NC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“It's a tad noisier than some other cars. The passenger seat in front is too low.”

Anonymous, GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“mileage less than told road noise worse than thought”

BRAD S., MO (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“seats very hard, road noise.”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The driver seat is adjustable, but the passenger seat is NOT, so as a passenger it feels like you are going to the floor. The back seat is roomy and comfortable I must use a seat belt extender because I cannot reach (or find when needed) the place to plug in the seatbelt. The seatbelt itself is fine, just the hole for it.”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Road noise is loud. Climate control doesn't have a bilevel option for warm air to the windshield, to prevent outside condensation, and cool air to the driver, for comfort, or vice versa.”

NICOLAS W., IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The seat depth in the front of the car need to be a little deeper. Seemed skimpy.”

Anonymous, SC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Harsh ride on the SE trim. Maybe it's the wheels.”

Anonymous, AB (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Location of heated seat switches is poor-- make that terrible. Placing packages etc. on them can turn them on accidentally. Not funny when it's 90 degrees outside!”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The heating and cooling work great, but the fan is loud. The ride is very quiet and smooth. Heated seats heat up very quickly. The driver seat adjusts so many ways you can customize your fit.”

DEBORAH F., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I don't like the bucket seats. Also, it doesn't have air conditioning vents in the back.”

Anonymous, PA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“ride is hard , feel everything on city streets”

MARIO R., OH (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Seats support is great, car is great for long distance trips (over 4 hours). Quiet ride and comfortable. Great touring car”

DAVID G., ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Seats are low to the ground especially the front passenger's seat. Sometimes difficult getting in and out from the low seating.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“the climate control system on the 2013 Sonata GLS could be better for control over where the air is blowing”

Anonymous, QC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Could be a quieter ride.”

Anonymous, NM (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Seats very uncomfortable, lack lumbar support, too low, passenger seat even worse. Climate control works well, controls are just adequate, handling very good precise steering w/ firm ride. Cabin noise much improved from 2011 we leased which was horrid”

EDWARD L., DE (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“wind noise is noticeable. Passenger seat is too low and not automatic. Tires spin too easily in snow conditions. Car passenger seat cannot be raised.”

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I love this car. I only have 2 problems. I did not get leather seats to my disappointment. The seats I have stain easily and I have trouble getting the stains out. I am the only driver but sometimes my passengers spill things. I am disappointed in the Bluetooth. It will not accept some names that are in my Iphone. Everthing else is Awesome especially the style of the Sonata.”

MARSHA L., TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“seats, styling,handlling”

Anonymous, AL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Passenger seat sits too low and there are no ways to adjust, which surprised me with a Limited. Road noise makes it hard for my 92 year old father to hear. Did not have the problem with my former car, a Toyota Avalon”

ELAINE B., IN (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I have found this vehicle to be very reliable but the exterior visibility is quite poor. It is difficult to see when changing lanes and/or backing up. My only other complaint is limited leg room.”

DENNIS B., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“great ride, comfortable seats, great control, smooth ridei”

TRUDY H., ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I traded in a Hyundai Accent because of dissatisfaction with the ride quality. Although the Sonata is somewhat better, I'm still unhappy with it.”

L K., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“driver seat is skimpy and not long enough under the thighs which puts pressure on the back. This is an easy place to say money but i would not buy again for this reason.”

F O., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Passenger seat sits way too low and height can't be adjusted.”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Ride is a bit harder than previous Sonata I owned. Not a major problem though.”

GERALD K., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Road noise. Have to turn up volume on radio to overcome.”

ROBERT R., OR (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The driver's seat cushion (base cloth seats) is too short, low and unsupportive for a tall driver. I constantly have leg discomfort while driving and feel like I need to do yoga even after a short trip. Unfortunately, this is really a dealbreaker despite everything else I really enjoy about this car! A smaller but still annoying issue is that the steering wheel doesn't telescope far enough with the seat all the way back.”

MICHAEL H., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Heated seats and comfortable with lumbar support.Terrific air and heat controls. Inside while riding it is very quiet. It is a very smooth riding car.”

DEBRA F., AL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“A lot of road noise! Low sitting position.”

T N., QC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“We got our Sonata fully loaded for less than a base Camry. So far we have 40,000 trouble free miles.”

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“While there are things I would like to change, the overall value for this car is well above average.”

DENNIS M., WA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“If you are the second or third owner etc. You will pay a big price to get the Hyundai 10 year 100,000 warranty extended to you. Then you will only get what is left on that warranty.”

DANNY B., IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“13 sonata goes head to head against the camry or accord or any other family sedan. the value you get is excellent when compared to more expensive family sedans”

ROY A., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Feel like I have a better riding car than Honda or Toyota, for significantly less money”

MYRON F., IL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Since purchasing new in 2013, there have been approx 8-10 incidents of the car becoming disabled and unable to drive. The car alarm system is seriously flawed and often won't reset to allow the car to start despite following directions in vehicle's manual, and guidance from Hyundai roadside assistance. Roadside assistance has had to utilize tow companies on my behalf several times, often because alarm system drains battery - which prevents trunk release button from working and not allowing”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The owner of this car racked up 33K miles in its introduction year and then sold it back to the dealer. I was in the dealership when they had just taken it back. Because of the high mileage and no investment in advertising, yet, I was able to buy this car at $5k below book value.”

STEVEN S., MO (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“This is my third Hyundai and I think they're the best bang for the buck. I said I probably wouldn't buy another Sonata because I'll probably move up to the Genesis next.”

PETER S., CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Good price Warranty”

ANDREW S., FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Great value for the money.”

DENNIS M., TN (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

JAMES R., GA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“After the fact, I found out about a recall on 2011-2012 Sonatas with a serious problem that could result in engine failure. Hyundai Canada sent correspondence indicating that the warranty would be extended to 150K km for the affected parts and other powertrain-related parts. Not a good feeling that the car could just die on me without warning.”

ALEXANDER C., ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Great car for the money. Warranty is great, but you may not need it. Haven't had any issues with the car.”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“This car, which we bought brand new, cost less than comparable vehicles such as Honda Accord & Toyota Camry. There are some issues, such as road noise, which would be better with the other cars, but this car is fine & worth it since we paid thousands of dollars less for it. Definitely worth the value”

LORI T., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Price was ca. $2000 less than comparably priced Toyota models. My average mileage has been higher than expected.”

EDWIN E., SC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“This is my second Sonata. The best, most reliable, great MPG, styling, etc., at a remarkably decent price.”

Anonymous, VA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“milage is as advertised, 33in town 40 highway”

PAT F., OK (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I have the sport edition. It looks good and came with leather, power seat, sunroof, great larger wheels and a great sound system with Bluetooth that works well with my phone, all at less cost that a similar Accord or Camry”

Styling

What Owners Say

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The more conservative front end styling. We don't like the big open mouth grill on Toyota and others.”

Anonymous, AZ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“I'm a retired Industrial Designer. This is one the finest cars I have ever owned. I had Ford's for 35 years this car performs better. The pick-up is superb, which is needed in trying to get into New York highways. Overall I have no problems.”

J H., NY (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Would have liked to have aluminum wheels also, did not buy because I didn't want the rest of the assories (?) that came with the wheels (too expensive.)”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

PAUL M., TX (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“The high quality of the finish required little washing and always looks outstanding. I am often asked how often the car is washed, and most are surprised when I say....'rarely'”

SHELDON F., NJ (2013 Hyundai Sonata)

“Beautiful styling. But should get rid of all shiny trim on dash; causes reflections on windshield & outside mirrors.”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Sonata)
