2016 Hyundai Tucson Owner Satisfaction - Consumer Reports
Unexciting but practical. Solid transportation that gets you from point A to point B. Those are the damn-with-faint-praise platitudes that some auto enthusiasts use to dismiss vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson. But many consumers don't want -- let alone need -- the 'wow' factor. They seek a competent, workmanlike ride and a headache-free ownership experience.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"There is adequate acceleration, however the shifting i less refined than it should be. There are several sensors for driving condition and it is possible to 'trip' them and the vehicle will shut down. Was told it was a safety feature to protect the vehicle from serious damage, and nothing was wrong with the vehicle. But I feel after being towed into a dealership because the vehicle shut it self down IS in fact a problem."

Daniel L., TN (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"great turning radius for a large car"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Starting off there is sometimes a bucking because of the dual clutch."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"I don’t like acceleration, because of the transmission. The doulble clutch transmission is no good. One transmission and two service calls later, still not right"

Richard B., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Unsatisfied with the dual clutch system. Rough take off on inclines and reverse on uphill incline impossible without overheat warning. Cannot hod incline position with rpm. Otherwise totally satisfied."

John W., BC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Sloppy shifting at initial acceleration"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Take-off from a stop is slow and jerky due to the clutch system used in this vehicle."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Transmission lags to the point that sometime accelerating at intersections from a stop is scary."

Brian C., OR (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Handling is superb in all weather conditions. Very snappy performance in SPORT mode. Excellent fuel mileage in ECO mode, up to 36 MPG on the road depending on speed and terrain. 30 MPG is typically achievable on open road."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Engine power is insufficient, with poor acceleration."

Anonymous, AB (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Aggressive accelerating in ECO mode is sluggish, however, in Sport mode, is great."

James S., NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The only downside to the 1.6T engine I have is that acceleration is NOT smooth. It is quite jerky and inconsistent. I have learned how to drive with it (for example, accelerating from a stop), but it is commented upon by anyone who drives the car. I will I had upgraded to the Santa Fe Sport for the better engine."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration at lower speeds is very good. The turbo engine has loads of torque and I find myself pulling away from surrounding traffic without trying. The steering is accurate and has no play at center. Mu previous Lexus RX required frequent small correction to remain on line on straight highways. The Tucson tracks well with little correction required. We spend summers at Lake Tahoe and drive over a 9,000 ft pass frequently. The turbo engine does not seem to lose any power, unlike non-turbo cars. The Tucson corners well and seems agile."

J S., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"While the car has plenty of power, sometimes when accelerating, it "jerks" regardless of the drive mode. Seem to do a little better in "sport" mode but that uses more gas."

Daniel C., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration from a standing stop often balks, sometimes to the point of unsafe operation. Acceleration while in motion can also be balky"

Allen L., MN (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Not the best driving up hills."

"poor acceleration and transmission noise"

Ralph P., PA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Very sporty. Has multiple driving modes to save fuel. Stable. Grips the road."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Excellent acceleration once moving. During stop and go traffic the dual clutch transmission can lurch, but otherwise very smooth. Handling is above average for the class."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"sometimes, when trying to accelerate quickly from a standstill, the "turbo log" results in a small, but definite lag in acceleration. A software fix from the dealer helped some, but the problem still occurs at times. Otherwise, handling is very good!"

"Acceleration slow"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"I don't like the transmission at all. It's good when just accelerating from a stop, but it's terrible when accelerating after just slowing down for some reason and then stepping on the gas again. There's a bad delay with the double clutch system that can be very disconcerting."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The car handles great but the acceleration is very jerky st times with a bit of a delay."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"There is Often hesitation when starting from a stop"

Brian G., NH (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"At first I was skeptical about the Tucson because the interior noise level was higher than my previous car the Santa Fe, but, as soon I learn how well it handled curves, I forgot about the noise level and started looking for curvy roads. I love how it handles on curves and at higher speeds than other cars I have owned. After an adjustment was made, acceleration has been excellent and trustworthy."

Donna B., MA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The transmission has a slight hesitation at times while starting slowly from a stop position"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"I drive to Phoenix and have large hills to drive over with no loss of power. Just a quiet smooth ride."

N C., AZ (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Instant acceleration due to it’s a FCEV"

David R., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The DCT (dual clutch transmission) can be tricky to predict/master. You must drive smoothly with minimal rapid changes in inertia in order to enjoy smooth operation; otherwise it can feel like it gets stuck in the wrong gear, and often at inconvenient times. Also, the stereo system seems to drop out occasionally whenever there is a transient load on the alternator."

Anonymous, AL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Uneven acceleration from stoped position. Herky jerky."

Donald P., IL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The only weak spot in the driving experience was the transmission which seemed at times to lag in hunting for the right gear. After updating and perhaps the computer learning my driving style (or maybe my getting used to it), this is not much of an issue now. I'm of course comparing this to my experience with our Genesis which is much smoother."

"at time when pressing the accelerator it hesitate for a split second"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Hyundai had 3 recalls for the transmission before it worked correctly."

Bruce W., RI (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"I think you know the vehicle hesitates when starting out. It is very bad when braking with left foot and not removing my foot completely while accelerating. Also the brakes are very touchy, in other words they grab very had when touched. The vehicles steering has to be adjusted as you are driving I guess due to short turning radius."

James S., PA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The double clutch system is iffy on precise on cue exceleration. Hate it."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Bad. Car does not accelerate smoothly. Jerks and has trouble finding the gear. 3 times back and no improvement."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"There is often a lag when accelerating - sometimes when needing quick speed -entering a highway - and sometimes when accelerating from a stop - like at a stop sign. Been to two dealers, both say no recalls - no problem."

Debora S., RI (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Very flexible, the DCT transmission works smooth, however you need to get use to it (it is not like regular automatic). Great acceleration 0-100km/h. It handles firm on turns and curves, not much body roll. You feel safe when driving this car."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The turbo tends to just die at times. This was really prominent in the first month, and then there were some recalls that fixed this. It was scary sometimes at a light or intersection, I would have my foot pressing the pedal all the way to the floorboard and the car would not accelerate. My only complaint now is that it seems like it's constantly shifting gears at lower speeds."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration and gear shifting (automatic transmission) are sometimes jerky"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The gas mileage is excellent for a vehicle this size. Being a four cylinder SUV, you do have to give up a little bit of acceleration to achieve the great gas mileage. It carries the load well and handles nicely."

Roger E., TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Poor acceleration- confusing phone call system- good exterior styling and handling"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"There is a problem with the car when you accelerate from a stop. The car was recalled for this but is not fixed and the dealer says he can not fix it."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The manner in which it accelerates initially is very shaky, like a new driver learning to drive a manual transmission vehicle. When reported to Hyundai, I was told that it was normal and due to the vehicle's dual clutch transmission. Very disappointed in the performance of this car."

Natalie B., TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Tremendous acceleration and very responsive power train. The dual clutch transmission is excellent. Handles like a sports car. Easy passing and road grip. Lots of fun to drive."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"car is great except it is under powered"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration is not incredible, but it is an economic 4 cylinder engine in a small SUV, so it is satisfactory. I get excellent mileage and have gotten 34 mpg or better on the highway. I'm not real clear on just what difference the Eco mode does, but since it defaults to Eco, that is my normal driving mode."

Roger E., TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"From a stop position, acceleration is jerky. this was computer corrected at the dealer but it still has that hesitation from a dead stop."

Dale C., WI (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"holds the road well & good on turns"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Great turbo acceleration. Turbo lag is bad but it is only a 1.6 Liter engine. Handling is sporty and stiff but not to the point of a jarring ride"

Joe K., KY (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The Hyundai Tucson has many features of more expensive cars but it's transmission and acceleration is horrible. It's had three software recalls to fix its "DVT". It still continues to hesitate which could be very dangerous."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Electronic Transmission computer failed.Still waiting two months and no repairs in sight."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration is great in all 3 modes. There is a slight hesitation in acceleration from a dead stop if you attempt a jack rabbit start. However, this normal for a turbo as it needs to build pressure for a few seconds."

DAVID F., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Any time you accelerate there is a lag time. Our transmission failed and replaced did not effect it. Handles well. less milage per gallon as advertised. Very quiet cabin"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"this car have problems related to the dual-clutch gearbox. It can be in Drive and the RPM going up without me stepping on gas but car wont move . It can take several seconds before it lurches forward out of my control. If this happens while I am waiting for oncoming cars to clear, I could/would have a head on crash. My car is at the Island Hyundai of Staten Island today and they tell me there is nothing wrong with car. Should I continue to drive this car ? Would you?"

MAGNE S., NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"When starting from a stopped position the acceleration is sometimes hestitant and doesn't repond as expected when the gas pedal is depressed which can make the start slow and jerky"

MARK A., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"When we first got it, the car was a little hesitant on launch from a stop. After the turbo control module fails and the turbo failed and all of the systems were replaced and the latest TSB implemented, the car is excellent in acceleration, gas mileage is good. Handling has always been very firm and precise."

ROGER B., NM (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration is very good in Sports mode, the Economy mode is perfect for highway cruising. Three very different cars in one, depending on your selection. One thing though: at very low speed (leaving a parking spot, sliding in a bumper to bumper kind of traffic, there is a noticeable vibration, as if the transmission didn't quite engage into gear..."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The transmission is a bit choppy, like the feeling you'd have when driving in first gear in a manual car. I got a firmware update to solve some of this, but especially with a cold engine it seems bothersome."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Car hesitates when stepping on gas and is very noticeable in bumper to bumper traffic"

KENNETH M., CT (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Continuing problem with the 7-speed transmission. A factory recall and reprogramming of the transmission computer solved the problem for about 2-3 weeks, then problem returned. Feels like the vehicle is starting out in a higher gear, and then finally kicks into 1st upon flooring the accelerator, causing the vehicle to peel out. Taking it in again to be reprogramed. According to Internet postings, this is a common problem."

TERRENCE T., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Vehicle hesitates when you first step on gas. Also in a fast start as you enter into traffic the turbo is slow in getting going and vehicle hesitates. A serious safety issue. The dual clutch system shifts roughly at times. From a positive standpoint, once driving at over 30, one of the best riding SUV's I've ever been in. Dealer response to issues" all the Tucsons do that. Unacceptable."

STEPHEN D., SC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The car had a tendency to lose power for no apparent reason. It was a recall and was corrected. It also had a hood latch issue that was a recall and was corrected."

MICHAEL L., NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration is something that I concern about"

JOHN M., MA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Handling and acceleration on this vehicle is outstanding, especially considering the size of the engine."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"I didnt test drive the turbo but ended up buying one to get other features i wanted. The "turbo lag" is so bad, it is unsafe. I accelerate and there is a significant delay before anything happens. Also on slight inclines, if i need to ease forward, it rolls back (this car is an automatic). Hyundai's solution is a small "hill assist" button between the seats. Awkward and dangerous."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"I will never again purchase a vehicle with a 4 cylinder engine."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Hesitation when accelerating could be dangerous"

JOAN G., MD (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The computer controlled transmission in ECO mode is difficult to use since it controls acceleration no matter how much you depress the accelerator. Pulling out into traffic can be difficult. I quit using ECO mode and only drive in NORMAL mode now."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"It hesitates badly when slowing and then starting or pulling out from a complete stop. This is a safety concern and I will be selling it. Left me sit in cross traffic twice."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"This vehicle is the best handling I have ever driven. The 1.6l turbo engine gives you any needed power quickly and is so responsive to what you want it to do.My previous SUV was a Mitsubishi Outlander Sport and my Tucson can run circles around it. It is just so easy to drive and in my job I drive a lot."

CAROL K., IN (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Very comfortable to drive. Low road noise. Enjoy it's smaller size (from 6 previous, larger Toyota Siennas). Don't need the space or costs anymore. Mise the 3rd row on occasion, but no longer really necessary. Decent "trunk space" for our needs: retired couple."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The turbo has no lag. Instant power"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Once you get moving, the Tucson with turbo engine has great acceleration, smooth gear shifts, and very nice handling. Ride is smooth and comfortable, very subdued noise level. Far better than the Toyota RAV4, which still rides terribly despite recent (supposed) improvement."

R L., AZ (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Transmission a bit edgy.(dual clutch), however very effisient and sporty"

WILLIAM S., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"It is a hydrogen FCEV, with very good acceleration and handling."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Have experienced minor transmission issues with hesitation and one time transmission stuck in neutral even though shifter was in drive. This problem was supposedly fixed with software update for transmission - so far so good. A simple automatic transmission with good low speed pick-up would make this car a far better choice and by far best in class."

TERRY G., NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Vehicle has a dual automatic clutch which I find interesting. The shifts are extremely smooth. It can be a little quirky at low speeds."

Anonymous, WV (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The handling exceeds expectations. The vehicle has 2 modes -- eco and sport. Even in eco mode the car handles beautifully, but put it in sport mode and it's amazing. And I've owned other smaller and sportier cars. The handling of this one is comparable to any I've owned."

Anonymous, NM (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Engine revs and car won't move. Very dangerous! Called "false neutral" in the automatic dual-clutch transmission. Nationwide problem re safecar.com. Hyundai supposedly working on a software fix. Car sitting at dealer. Could be weeks or months to fix according to dealer."

BARRY L., AZ (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Rock solid. The vehicle drives like an expensive sedan and handles wonderfully."

RICHARD H., NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"A little sluggish in terms of acceleration."

WAYNE B., ON (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The Hyundai's combo of small turbocharged 4 and dual clutch transmission provides surprisingly quick acceleration with quite good gas mileage. The dual clutch gearbox generally works well with only occasional hesitation as it finds the right gear when accelerating from a rolling stop. The handling has some trade offs to provide a comfortable ride, but for the most part feels precise and safe."

ALAN L., GA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Twice the dual clutch did not engage"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Problem with the DCT transmission. At times, it will not shift into 1st gear. This is potentially dangerous. Hyundai does not have a fix yet. It has been at the dealer. I am waiting for Hyundai to move forward with my Lemon Law case."

"Hesitates when starting up from a stopped position."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Front seats are both power, heated & ventilated. Very comfortable. Lumbar support for driver's seat OK. Good driving position. For my posture, the headrest is intrusive and pushes my head forward. I reversed it. My major complaint is road (tire) noise on anything but smooth pavements. Mechanical & wind noise are very low."

J S., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Seats and adjustment system is great for driver. Front passenger can't raise seat short people can barely see out the window. Sound quality is poor either road or wind noise makes radio sound fuzzy."

The driver's seat has many possible and easy to use adjustments--lumbar support, height, forward or back, tilt of back support. "I got the basic model which came equipped with just the right essential controls or perks like driver power seat but not passenger, rear view camera, and the controls are all intuitive, easy to access and use. I drive my father's upscale Lexus SUV weekly taking him out since he can no longer drive and I prefer Hyundai over the Lexus and the price difference is staggering... and I can keep that money in the bank."

JOHN M., NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"For a car that is supposes to be a smaller car it is anything but inside. It is roomy, super comfortable to drive and very quiet. All controls seem to be in just the right place. The interior is very pleasing to the eye."

DAVID D., MA (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"The side bolsters of the front seat backs are too close together and can annoy the kidney area. The lumbar support adjustment is too high on the back as well. The front seats could be more comfortable and still supply support for horizontal movement during hard cornering."

"has a clunking noise on take off after sitting, dealer unable to find source."

LESLIE F., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson)

"Seats are exceptionally comfortable with just-right support (firm, but not too hard). Both driver and passenger seats have full power adjustments. Front seats are ventilated and rear seats are heated. The climate control system is effective and the controls are very straightforward. I test drove every small affordable SUV on the market and found the Hyundai had the best ride and lowest noise level."

"This car is just excellent! Because of my age, I can't get used to paying 20 some thousand for a car - but of course, it's worth it. There are many vehicles costing more than this one, but I'll take the Hyundai any time."
