2017 Hyundai Tucson Owner Satisfaction - Consumer Reports
Unexciting but practical. Solid transportation that gets you from point A to point B. Those are the damn-with-faint-praise platitudes that some auto enthusiasts use to dismiss vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson. But many consumers don't want -- let alone need -- the 'wow' factor. They seek a competent, workmanlike ride and a headache-free ownership experience.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Very nimble and turns on a dime!"

Nancy P., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"To new to tell only has 500 miles"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Again the safety features"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"We had the first generation Tucson and this new one is light and day. The old Tucson steered harder than my truck and visibility was not good. This new one has light handling characteristics and goes where pointed. The old V6 was a real powerhouse but gas mileage was abysmal. The new turbo has some lag but is just as good as the old 6 for highway merging and just seems more fun to rev and go. Mileage is way better as well."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Poor acceleration (I commented on this a few sceens back) which was very disappointing."

Jeff M., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"This SUV is AWESOME...accelerates really well. Doesn't hesitate when I press the accelerator. Doesnt rock if an 18 wheeler drives past at a high rate of speed."

Keely S., MD (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Slightly sluggish with the 4-cyl base 168 HP version"

Ralph W., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The excessive shifting from a near stop causes delay and jerking"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Excellent handling and very responsive acceleration-it is a 1.6t (turbo). One month old, but love it. More maneuverable than the 8 yr old Hyundai Santa Fe we traded in."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Has three options for driving e o, sport and regular"

Orest K., BC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"I have already returned the Tucson to the dealer for repair of acceleration. Frequently when I pull out such as at an intersection there's a consistent stall and I never know for certain it is going to move quickly when I am making for instance a left hand turn. They indicated that I may need to return it if it continues and that there is a fix for this and at this point in time it continues to be a problem."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Adequate acceleration and good handling"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Handling is superb. Great manuverability and easy parking. Pickup could be better, especially in hilly areas."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The acceleration is poor when starting from zero."

Vivian D., MD (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Not the greatest at accelerating at low speeds. Handles well and is really good on the highway and at high speeds. Really good to park."

Michelle G., BC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration with the DCT transmission is not that good."

Steven C., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"It is not always as responsive as I’d like it to be upon acceleration. Sometimes it sputters and jerks."

Maxine D., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Dual clutch operation sucks.Would not purchase again"

Anonymous, IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"This car handles curves exceptionly well. Really holds the road and has great steering"

Laura F., NC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Default transmission mode seems to be an "eco" mode, causing jerky behavior at low speeds. Choosing the "sport" mode makes the vehicle more responsive and smoother at sustained speeds, but a little too aggressive for city driving."

S J., TX (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Has 1.6 turbo with 7-speed dual clutch drivetrain. This is a computer controlled manual transmission (no clutch pedal). The programming is a predictive protocol. If the system incorrectly predicts the next gear/shift, the vehicle will improperly respond to accelerator command, sometimes leaving you in a precarious position. (Such as failure to accelerate/properly accelerate in a traffic merge situation, leaving you open tp a potential collision due to slow/improper/unpredictable vehicle movement. This can cause a suddenly accelerated heart rate, as well as non-appreciation from the motoring public. According to Hyundai service, this condition is as designed and non-addressable. (Learn to adapt to the vehicle. Do not expect the computer learning curve to adapt to you.). This does not seem to me to be a long-time customer satisfying attitude. For a vehicle that is in many respects worthy transportation, this is inappropriate in both form and function."

David A., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration with Turbo is very strong. However I often feel that when accelerating from a dead stop, there is far to long a pause before the car starts moving. It is as if the automatic transmission is having difficulty fully engaging."

Joe F., MI (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"After one year of ownership and 8000 miles of driving my 2017 Hyundai Tucson Sport began stuttering and halting at low speeds; under 10 miles per hour. When I pause driving and wait for a moment for a car to pass before making a turn, the car won't move forward. It halts and stutters before it moves through the turn. Same effect pulling out of the garage driveway. Dealer - Terry Lee Hyundai - mechanic states that my vehicle has a warped clutch plate (dual clutch) and the solution is to replace the entire automatic transmission.. 6-8 week wait for it to be delivered from south Korea. And 2-5 days to replace it once the new trans arrives. I'm still waiting for an update from the dealer or from Hyundai to learn about the status of my Tucson's repairs."

Steven P., IN (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"As often noted, low speed acceleration with the dual clutch automatic can be somewhat jerky."

B M., PA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration, handling, disability from inside."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Handles very well but slow acceleration; takes too long to pass in highway driving"

Richard S., TX (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Has better than average acceleration, outstanding handling."

Robert F., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"acceleration is non existent, and a cause for concern when trying to pass or make a left turn in traffic. Handling including accretion is sluggish"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"We drive at a moderate pace - it does very well for us!"

Bill K., AZ (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"See previous comments"

Ronald G., PA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Have read negative comments about the acceleration and handling. Disagree. Very powerful acceleration when trying to enter a parkway via an entrance ramp, during times when acceleration counts. Reacts well and handles well. No complaints about either."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Just a fun car to drive. Great steering control and responsive handling."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Very responsive on the road under extreme weather conditions."

Louis S., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"In low gear there is a distinct hesitation when accelerating"

Edward C., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The 1.6 Turbo with the Dual clutch system is fantastic at merging and everyday driving...just completed a 240 mile trip today and with a fully load car got 27 MPG (city/Hwy). I have NEVER had any of the problems Consumers Reports talks about with the 1.6L Turbo - Dual Clutch system (AWD)- In fact the shifts are amazingly smooth - the acceleration is great and the gas mileage puts my three (previously owned)Honda Pilots (2008/2010/2014) I used to own to shame. Comfort and quietness are way better than all three Pilots. Great car at a great price and I will keep it for a very long time. The Technology found in this car is just unbelievable for the price."

Virginia D., VA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"excellent acceleration,"

Jose A., NJ (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"turbo is great"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration is what I would expect from this car. It's adequate. Handling is excellent for my driving needs. I'm not street racing."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"There's a long hesitation when accelerating from a stop."

Anonymous, VA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"the handling is fine but the acceleration is terrible"

Susan G., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"when accelerating In eco or standard mode, the vehicle responds with limited pick-up and is rather noisy. The transmission shifts are not always smooth. In extremely hot weather the transmission shifts erratically"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"There are times in heavy, slow traffic, that there is a hesitation when accelerating. It feels like the engine had quit for 2 or 3 seconds."

Terrence K., IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Engiñe is 4 cyl and is not very peppy."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"peppy with the turbo"

Richard R., ON (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The safety features of lane changes the warning systems when some one is in blind spot and warning systems when in reverse"

Joanna C., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Awful acceleration. Unsettled driving experience.(vibration, hesitation) Steering wheel ignition has locked 3 times even though we are careful to park with wheels straight."

Anonymous, CT (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Hyundai couldn't fix the problem with my previous Santa Fe. Looks like I'm having the same problem with this car .Car buffers on accelerating and fells like breaks are being applied while coasting to a stop. I'll soon sell this car and go back to a Ford f150."

Pat F., NJ (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The acceleration is horrible. The turbo kicks in and out unexpectedly. There are delays and lunges. It makes it difficult to pass confidently and accelerate evenly. The power brakes don't always act the same. Sometimes they engage and stopping is easy and controlled. Sometimes they don't seem to engage much and it requires more, sometimes a lot more, pressure on the brake pedal to stop."

Ralph L., NC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"turbo is very quick"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Excellent acceleration! We drive to and from Florida and this car has been the best when I need to merge on a highway or pass all those trucks on 95."

Susan B., NH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Hesitation/delay in acceleration! I have repeatedly reported this to Hyundai and received no satisfaction. Problem persists. One dealer even shared that this is a common complaint among consumers."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"When you step on the gas pedal, between 0 - 10mph, there is a hesitation. If you check reviews all across the internet, you will find it a common complaint amoung 2017 Hyundai Tuscon owners."

Richard C., IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"It’s the 1.6 turbo model and there is a lot of slack when you start accelerating from a stop ... it almost feels like the car is going to stall. Once the car is up to speed on the highway it has very good acceleration for passing, especially on hills. Handling is responsive."

Heather W., AB (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Fast, easy to handle,"

David P., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Could use better acceleration for a car this size, needs a bigger engine. Handling is soft and electric steering has no feel."

Robert C., PA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Handling is somewhat better than previous front-wheel drive SUVs I have driven. Torque-steer is muted very well. The turbo 4-cylinder engine is surprisingly strong and turbo "lag" is rarely noticeable. The car easily accelerates to interstate speeds when moving along an up-hill entrance ramp."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Acceleration and gear shifting (automatic transmission) are sometimes jerky"

Anonymous, WA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Already did!"

Richard S., TX (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The Turbo makes it a breeze to zip in and out of traffic. It handles super, turns on a Literal Dime, and feels great the whole time."

Mark L., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The main reason I wouldn't purchase this vehicle or lease it again is not enough power and poor acceleration. I am satisfied with everything else. I like the fuel economy, comfortable seats, etc.I like bluetooth, voice command and AWD."

Christopher L., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"turbo engine and comfort and the styling is fantastic. we have owned it for 2 days."

David Y., MA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The seats seem to be losing their cushioning just like with the Santa Fe. This seems to be a problem for all Hyundai vehicles though getting better. We had a previous Tucson and an Accent years ago and it was worse because those seats had very thin cushioning. The cushioning is thicker but just loses it's cushioning support over time."

Ashley M., NS (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Very stff"

Anonymous, AB (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"to soon to tell"

Anonymous, CT (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Seats recline in rear meaning our daughter can rear face longer without kicking seats"

Christopher A., CA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Compared to other SUV's (have rented numerous on trips) the Tucson is amazingly quite - the front seats are very comfortable and the handling is right on . The ride on long trips is fantastic and the sound system is great. The second row seats work extremely well. The climate control keeps you comfortable - especially the heated and A/C ventilated seats ...an amazing car for the price. The advanced safety systems - Lane keep assist - blind spot monitor - AEB - braking - back-up camera with dynamic bending and cross traffic alert - will never own a car without all of these - adds a level of comfort and confidence."

Virginia D., VA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"I am totaly dissatified with the wind noise at speeds over 45mph It seems to be from the full sun roof.i"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Seats provide adequate support and are comfortable. Noise level is low and is not a problem."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Excellent power driver's seat. The car is very quiet at highway speeds. Ride is good, given that the potholed streets of Sudbury are a challenge for any car."

Robert A., ON (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Adjustable"

Peggy J., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Both front seats have multiple (12 point) adjustment buttons including lumbar support. They are firm and comfortable. road noise is not too bad but could be improved. However, there is a wind noise that appears and disappears while driving on the highway. I have not been able to pinpoint the source, but it is quite annoying."

F F., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The seating is very comfortable and can be heated or cooled whenever required."

Vito P., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"seats could be more comfortable and road noise is greater than expected"

Irv P., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The ride is very comfortable including seats, noice and ride"

Anonymous, ON (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Great driving position for my wife and I with the least possible effortj"

Harold D., NB (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"comfortable seating. great ride. good handling very quiet in cabin"

Anonymous, NC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"I am a short person. I really like how I can adjust the seats for me. I enjoy driving this vehicle."

Michelle G., BC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The Tucson is easy to get in and out of, has comfortable, easily adjustable seats, and is a pleasure to drive. It is quiet and responsive"

Alan W., WA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Comfortable, and less noisy than competitors vehicles that we tested or have tested or been passengers in."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Seats are comfortable & easily adjustable. Very noise-proof regarding outside traffic, etc. Good smooth ride."

Judy H., TX (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Seats are average, okay for short trips, long drives not so much. Noise level could b a little lower, but it's not bad."

Anonymous, ID (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"ROAD NOISE RIDE Can FEEL THE ROAD"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Have had several Hyundais over the years and they all have an issue with road noise. It is particularly irritating on interstate highways. Have had a similar experience with Honda CRVs that we had."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Highway road noise is high in the back passenger windows. The ride is hard, you feel every bump."

Terrence K., IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"I don't like the drivers seat. I always feel like I am sitting left of center. No one else seems to experience this. My family finds the headrests uncomfortable and too far forward. They reverse the headrest when they drive. I am 5'2 tall and cannot get the drivers seat high enough to see the left side clearance when I enter my garage because the driveway is an incline. I would not choose this model again because of this fact. THE PAINT ON MY BUMPERS AND FRONT END IS CHIPPING BADLY. CHIPPING BADLY"

Bonnie L., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Overall cost is high for few accessories"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Reasonably priced for what you get"

Larry B., CA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Great features Great styling Great value"

Dennis N., IL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"An attractive, competent car with room and with the turbo, very good performance. That said, the mileage is very good averaging 28-29 mpg"

James B., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"I paid 17k for this car. Until 2010, I never had to do much more than basic maintenance- oil changes, tire rotations, alignments, tuneups new tires. My first battery lasted more than 5 years. I have to replace headlight bulbs once a year. Just had to replace the tail lights after 13 years and the and license tag lights after 15 years."

Keely S., MD (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Very well equipped for the price. Comparable Toyota, Honda! Subaru and Mazada much more expensive"

Orest K., BC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Solid vehicle, drives & handles well"

Alan Z., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"After much research, the best value I was able to find in the small crossover SUV segment. Plus the longest warranty available"

Ralph W., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"It is an SE - Plus. Comfortable, quiet, easy to drive. It came with all the features of the limited minus the noisier tires, the noisier moon roof, and the powered lift gate. Not withstanding missing the powered liftgate, I got a much nicer vehicle at considerably less cost. I looked at all the reviews on all the models of this same class in your magazine and watched the videos on your website ( I don't notice the shifting from your video). I test drove all the vehicles I was interested in..."

Brian C., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Used CR True Car buying program-again. Feel we got an excellent price and therefore terrific value in a car we wanted. Is our 6th Hyundai and 4th from the same dealer since we moved to FL."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"I love all the safety features"

"We were able to negotiate a great price plus we received a bunch of additional incentives. The number of great features in this vehicle is excellent. The 5 year 60,000 miles warranty is excellent."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Judy H., TX (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"a great vehicle, super style, great price, and good quality"

Kevin S., ME (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Good acceleration, ability to keep up and adjust on busy interstate hiways. Comfortable compact interior. Taudht positive handling. Back up camera blind spot warning right size for 2 person retirement traveling. Good as local runabout."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Transmission takes getting use to. But still great value for this price."

John H., NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Michael F., FL (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Vito P., OH (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Bill K., AZ (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Great price, great warranty, great service."

Anonymous, MA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

Anonymous, NC (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Warranty support and dealer support have been fantastic."

Anonymous, GA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Has been a great car especially for the price."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"Had a badic model Santa Fe before this. Didn’t realize the cargo area on this 2017 Tucson is quite a bit smaller than the Santa Fe. Wouldn’t say it was/is a great value for my money, just that it seems to be right in the price range for other cars of this style and type."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"The car was a lemon from day one... We immediately (within a few thousand miles) started getting a "check engine" warning. Each time, had to take it to the dealer for resolution. the first two times, they couldn't figure out the problem. The third time they moved some components on the motor intake around to see if that fixed the problems.... It didn't! So after the fourth time, they FINALLY called the company. The company told them to pull the oil dip-stick and smell the oil for petrol smell.. WHich it DID have. They said that they were having issues with the fuel pump system leaking fuel into the oil system. So they FINALLY replaced the fuel pump, after over 18,000 miles of petrol leaking into the ENGINE OIL! EIGHTEEN THOUSAND MILES of gas in the oil! And ALL they did was change the fuel pump... They didn't CARE about what happened to the Oil Lubricant System with a SOLVENT (GASOLINE) contaminating the engine! I will NEVER own a Hyundai EVER AGAIN!"

Ronald G., PA (2017 Hyundai Tucson)

"only 2000 mile"

"Great SUV! Well built. Easy to drive. Would recommend the SE Plus to anyone looking to purchase a new vehicle in this class."
