Based on the redesigned Mercedes-Benz ML, the first new model from post-bankruptcy Chrysler was a big improvement over the SUV it replaced, with levels of fit, finish, and refinement rivaling models costing a lot more.

What Owners Say

Alternator

"While on my way home from vacation in RI a warning light came on and I immediately went to a local Chrysler dealer and they informed me that the alternator was failing but they didn’t have a replacement part in stock. They said I should be fine to drive it home to NJ providing I didn’t turn the engine off. After driving a few miles away from the dealer the warning light came back on and on my way back to the dealer the engine turned off leaving me and my family stranded in the middle of the road. The emergency flashers didn’t even work nor could I get the SUV in nutral to have the car pushed to the roadside. The tow truck service also could not get the vehicle in nutral. The car remained at the RI dealership for 3 days. The alternator, battery and main computer modual were all replaced. This was one off many problems I’ve had with this vehicel since I purchased it new and even though this actually happened about 2 years ago the SUV has and continues to have a high rate of various issues that I haven’t experienced with any of the GM vehicels I’v owned. This was the first Jeep I purchased and it will be the last."

Electrical failure

"I was in Miami FL on visit and the car started to hesitate and loose power. Looked at the panel and the battery light was on and I could smell smoke. The car did stop once I pulled over and the RPM were not kept up. I drove back a block or so, once car started again to a repair garage I had seen and opened the hood. Alternator was smoking and smelled burnt. Garage changed the Alternator and tried to recharge the battery, but battery would not keep it's charge, so, a new battery was installed. Almost $900. in parts and labour and drove back to my home base in Florida, some 50 miles away and when I got to my rental unit, and RPM's were low, car stalled again, and more smoke from the new alternator. The next day, Had the vehicle towed back to the Miami garage and they again replaced the alternator, and again it was toast. I had to rent a vehicle as I had other commitments that day and said I would return the next day. When I returned, they told me that they had to have the vehicle towed to a local Jeep Dealership. After a long weekend plus a few more days, the vehicle was finally repaired by replacing the main computer in the vehicle, which, apparently was the cause of all my problems. The second invoice for repairs was very close to $1,000. I have now travelled back to Canada and the only small problem I have observed since all that work was done, was some small shifting problems with the transmission. I have not had a chance to have that looked at yet, but I suspect that this new computer may have had something to do with this."

Parking brake

"In Canada, I live within 100 feet from the Atlantic Ocean and since moving here, I have noted that the salt air affects all of the unpainted metal parts on the vehicle. I have had to change the discs on my vehicle 3 times now, not that they are worn, but the rust has pitted the surfaces so badly, that the brakes do not function property. When we last changed the rear discs, we found the entire mechanism for the parking brakes, on both sides, were completely rendered inoperative due to heavy rusting. As this is an automatic vehicle, I NEVER use the parking brakes. So, I have not made any repairs to the system as I am not using them. I was quoted at least $1,000 to repair and replace the entire parking brake system."
