Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, SC (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"Lexus updated a system via satellite and it caused a nation wide failure in the electrical system of the vehicle. The dealer shut off power to the vehicle, disconnected the battery for a 1/2 hour, and the problem was corrected. There was no radio or nav working as well as some other products. It did require a dealer svc but I do not blame the vehicle for it. An update was attempted via satellite that failed but was corrected quickly and effectively. With respect to this survey and the next ques"

Bernard P., CA (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"In June 2016, a software update of the Enform system caused the navigation system and infotainment systems to freeze for a few days. I had to take my car to the dealer to get the system reset. It was extremely inconvenient"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"Information and instructions come on and off the screen and may later appear. GPS requests you read info and make a decision using incredibly difficult to use mouse while driving down the road. Lane centering system does not work after 4 trips to the dealer"

"The system frequently gave me incorrect directions"

Rodger S., CA (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

Leo R., CA (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"I now rely more on Waze and Google Maps to get whereI need to go. It is more interactive and does not tell me I have arrived at my destination, when I haven't. It has told me to turn onto dead ends, make illegal turns."

Robert W., NY (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Every time I drive, the first call I make after my bluetooth pairing is always problematic - my voice will be scrambled to the party I call and vice versa. I would have to hang up and redial"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Lexus RX 350)
Radio

"Part of the satellite re-structure or update. Multi parts of the electrical system involving the radio/navigation system were affected. The matter was taken care by the dealer by disconnection of the battery for about 30 to 40 minutes. This action rectified the system and no problems since"

Bernard P., CA (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"The radio/infotainment system is all interconnected. Apparently, this is a problem the dealership/manufacturer was aware of because it was covered under warranty."

Beltane W., CA (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

Steering wheel controls

"It was the battery."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Lexus RX)
Voice control commands

"Will that work with my voice"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, WA (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)

"LEXUS already knows they need to work on the voice control commands. Hopefully they get there"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Lexus RX 350)

"System is very poor at understanding voice commands. say it louder, say it softer, please repeat. The system stinks. Plus I cannot answer a text that comes in"

Michael K., FL (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine knock or ping

"Engine made a knocking noise at idle. Dealer determined a vacuum pump assembly needed to be replaced (part #29300-0P010)"

Tom W., FL (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"When starting the car there is punting noise from the engine which is uncommon for a Lexus"

Joseph K., PA (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"Loud tapping sound when engine starts, noise level reduces a bit after driving 5 to 10 miles"

Tazimudin A., NY (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"it has exhaust noise amplifier, can not be shut ,makes a very irriting drawn, sometime the engien suddenly sounds like a diesel engine, Lexus is telling me its because it has direct fuel injection. I have worked on automobile since the age of 14year and own a automobile repairs shop in Vancouver. I have had comment s from motorist in the next lane if I am driving a new type of Lexus DIESEL"

Azaad E., BC (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)
Oil leaks

"There was an oil leak when I leased the RX and I became aware of it when I noticed oil on the garage floor shortly after I took delivery. The dealer had to remove the engine to repair the leak. It was done within about 3 days and I had a loaner vehicle during this period of time. The issue I have is the inconvenience of driving to the dealership which was a two hour drive. Otherwise no issues"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"enine oil leak around timing chain cover"

Harold R., TN (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

Bret D., IL (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"Case seal leaking - caught and fixed immediately"

Kevin K., AB (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)

"Leak required the engine to be taken apart to replace a faulty gasket inside of the engine. Car was out of service to me for over a week to repair problem. Apparently this problem is wide spread with 2016 models. My Service advisor indicate he has seen over 6 cars with this problem cross his desk. One advisor at on dealership makes one wonder why there was not a recall"

"My 2016 Lexus RX 350 developed an oil leak from the timing chain cover gasket and the valve cover gasket. The engine has been removed from the car twice so far in an attempt to fix the leaks. The car has been out of service for over 50 days for these and other problems."

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Calipers replaced due to parking brake noise."

Stephen W., NJ (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)
Parking brake

"Parking brake very noisy when applied automatically."

Stephen W., NJ (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"Car requires you engage the brake to start the car. It would not disengage the parking brake therefore wouldn't start called the dealership they sent a tow and fixed the car the next day at no cost."

Deana C., FL (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)
Premature brake wear

"Needed to replace front brake pads at 22.500 miles due to one brake pad being severely worn down on one side, when the other side was still good. Our Lexus NX has 55,000 miles and has not yet needed brake pad replacement."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"I was shocked to learn that my breaks needed replacing at 30,000 miles. I was told that that was the anticipated length of time for breaks to last. When you drive a 60,000 car you don't expect to need brakes at 30,000 miles."

Clifton L., MA (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)

"My 2016 350 RX required four new brake pads and resurfacing the rotters around 23,000 miles. I have owned many Toyota trucks, sedans and SUVs. Never had such a short interval brake issue."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)

"When braking at a high speed, the steering wheel shook."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Transmission shifts poorly. There is a dead spot during low speed shifting that makes car feel like an old worn out vehicle. Can't believe they let these cars pass inspection. Lexus replaced my first RX and the second one is better but still well below expectations. Software upgrade helped but after three months transmission reverted to harsh shifting. Very annoying after excellent experience I had with three previous Toyotas. Dealer has tried to assist but Lexus Corp sure does not appear t"

Steven C., IL (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission is prone to surging while accelerating. I maintain steady pressure on the accelerator, and there are moments when the vehicle jumps ahead. The only way around it is to stick your foot in it. It leads to herky jerky acceleration. Lexus said it is all within spec and decline to address it, even though the shop boss acknowledged the problem"

Robert M., VA (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"does not always downshift correctly when accelerating"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"very rough shifting using cruise control in the hill country where I live. Very jerky. Dealership said it was just the way the transmission worked. Research indicated it was a common problem on the 2016 RX. It still does it. That is why I am looking at other mid-size suv's for my next car."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"After down shifting to go up steep hills the transmission will at times not properly up shift or roughly up shifts after reaching level ground."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"Jittery transmission causes unexpected downshifting after starting from a stopped position. Very disappointing transmission that does not shift smoothly, no matter how gently one accelerates from a stopped position. When cruise control is engaged on highway driving, upon entering upon a steeper down slope, the transmission shifts to a lower gear very roughly."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission shifts like a manual transmission with a bad clutch. Very unrefined for this price point and compared to Toyota vehicles I’ve previously owned. Lexus put out a fix to exhaust system that helped remedy some of this but still shifting is subpar. Note Lexus did NOT contact me about fix rather I found out in a review in the Edmunds vehicle reports. Poor Lexus customer service. Dealer has been great but Lexus Corporate doesn’t seem to care. Very disappointed. Never had any problems like this with the sister Toyota division."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"Driveline vibration very annoying. Not sure if engine or poor shifting transmission. Lexus installed software upgrade but only corrected shifting problem temporarily. Have owned Toyotas and all shifted and ran much smoother. This cars drivetrain definitely not appropriate for a luxury vehicle. Feels crude and harsh. Lexus keeps saying it's normal. Very disappointed in their response. Dealer has tried to help but Lexus Corp unresponsive"

Steven C., IL (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"Shifting at about 38 MPH had a noticeable roughness or hesitation"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"kept getting an intermittent message that the system stopped working. took to dealer twice, both times they restarted the computer but had no idea what root cause was. seems fine in warmer weather."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"Parking sensors started beeping for no apparent reason telling me they were not fuctioning, was not on a rough rode or driving abnormal, shut the car down several times thinking it would fix the problem and they still have the same error when starting the car , got a appointment with lexus in @ weeks, which is unacceptable i think to wait that long."

Doug C., WV (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"Sensors in bumper became unsecured"

Bret D., IL (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"A problem in the steering wheel caused the steering assist to not engage. The steering wheel had to be replaced."

Stephen W., AR (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)

"Driver and passenger airbags were not working correctly"

Kathleen B., CT (2016 Lexus RX F Sport 3.5-L V6)

"I did not experience any problems. I got a recall letter."

John-Linda G., NC (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)
Pipes

"Design issue caused very loud and unrefined exhaust noise during light load conditions at low speeds. Problem acknowledged by Lexus, but no fix available. Problem was bad enough that I sold car"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"low growl at up to about 20 mph, very unusual for a new Lexus, or an old one for that matter. Dealer claimed not unusual for this particular model, but agreed it was noisy, Dealer replaced a Toyota part in exhaust system, dealer said it reduced noise from a 10 to about a 2. Noise persists, but at a much shorter duration. I plan to get rid of this car very soon unless Lexus can get rid of this noise. I consider it a lemon although some people might not be bothered by this noise. But when one pays"

Neil G., GA (2016 Lexus RX 350 3.5-L V6)

"Exhaust resonates when the transmission is at 1500 RPMs. Makes an annoying droning noise. The new parts for the fix have been on indefinite back order. Not Happy."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Lexus RX 350.0 3.5-L V6)
