The Mazda3 has been one of our top-scoring small cars for several years, distinguished by agile handling and a well laid out, good-quality passenger compartment. The interior has been further upgraded, but the rear seating area remains a little tight. Road noise is still pronounced. Trim-line designations are bound to confuse.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2010 Mazda 3 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"Brakes slowly became quite squishy. Had them replaced (also it was time for new breaks); still squishy. Lines bled, Master Cyl replaced; still squishy. Did some research on forums, and others who had the problem said it ended up being an ABS module problem. Temporary solution is to get up to speed and then brake hard. This temporary solution solved the squishy problem."

"the interface suggests that it's a multi cd player, but it's not, and it was sold to me as if it was."

Andrew C., MD (2010 Mazda 3 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"A CD got stuck and would not eject. I *just* got it out this week after months. I was able to play another CD, but I'm not sure it will normally eject any. Warranty is expired :-("

"The phone pairing was particularly annoying because there wasn't any warning the ability to connect to the cars phone application just failed. Its replacement was very expensive for which I understand was merely a replacement of a electronic board, apparently it was buried inside the dash."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Suddenly would not connect. Tried to re-pair,add,delete phones, but it would time out. Struggled with it for months. was luck enough to delete all paired phones before time-out and then add back a couple phones, so now it works, but very frustrating"

Francis C., PA (2010 Mazda 3 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"the radio began to make a popping noise, then the speakers cut in and out, then it stopped working. the Mazda dealership couldn't solve the problem after replacing numerous parts. the car had to be taken to a private radio/stereo installer, and the radio anded had to be replaced, along with a large amount of wiring that had overheated and melted"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"base sound distortion which is in the circuitry, not the speakers, and which interferes mostly with enjoyment of music (not entirely), gets worse at increased decibels, and is another problem that the local dealer failed to recognize (acknowledge during the warranty period, but after the warranty had run out, said there was nothing to be done - had to be replaced at my expense. Mazda North America did not help me either."

Joel E., PA (2010 Mazda 3)

"we had a problem with the factory installed radio overheating, causing wires to the speakers to melt. The radio also lost two channels, and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The bass came on erratically and loudly to the extent that it shook the car."

Anonymous, IN (2010 Mazda 3)

Cynthia D., ON (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel controls

"It had to do with the wheel sensors, which I did not know existed. But this definitely caused me some angst. The ABS light came on & I did not know why, so I went to our local Les Schwab and they identified the problem. I took it to a local mechanic and got sticker shock as it was quite expensive to repair from my perspective, however, I am also glad to have this safety device and ability to protect myself and my car."

What Owners Say

Ball joints

"Ball joints started showing evidence of wear with a little more than 130,000 km. Replacement is pricey, because the repair requires the replacement of the entire front control arm. Paid about $1200 to have Mazda dealer replace both parts."

"I have a power steering leak from the rail"

Anonymous, OH (2010 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System developed leaks and I had to replace rack and pinion as part of overall maintenance of vehicle."

Anonymous, TN (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Steering wheel vibration

"this was actually caused because of a dent in the alloy wheels. they couldn't be balanced and so a vibration comes through the steering where at highway speeds. I am told they factory wheels are softer than more expensive aftermarket rims."

Geoffrey C., CT (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"axle replacement required"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Mazda 3 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Tire wear is uneven

"The wheels on the Mazda are very low profile (205/50-17) and the tires have a problem mating to them. I have averaged a blowout or valve failure or other problem approximately once a year for every year I have owned the car. I have had to instruct the tire shop to add sealer to the rims when they do the installations so that the tire edges don't work loose from the rims, which has happened twice. This is the only issue, otherwise the car has been very reliable, and I drive it pretty hard."

Richard G., MD (2010 Mazda 3 Mazdaspeed 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Extremely excessive inside shoulder wear on front tires caused by stock Mazdaspeed 3 negative camber specs. Mazda will not acknowledge cause of wear. Dealer says alignment is spot on, but can't explain unusual wear except to say, "This is 'Speed'"

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The AC system performance deterioirated over time affecting bothnsummer cooling and winter defrosting. I had the system recharged that didn't ladt too long and was able to stop in unannounced at my local repair shop to show him a picture of a partially (left side only) condensated front winshield on a very humid day. Furthermore, he was able to observe the left side air vents cooling more effectively than the right side, despite it being a non-dual climate zone automobile. I have not had it repaired yet, but it has been diagnosed, so my comments are based upon his initial assessment. I'm uncertain if I will pay the 500'ish $'s tomrepair it. Mycommute to work is 2 miles after all."

Daniel M., PA (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Car would not cool at all. Took it in to the dealer where they said it was a computer problem. It was covered by warranty."

Murray H., CA (2010 Mazda 3 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Had compressor replaced and a/c worked for a few weeks. Took car back in for service and was told air mixer control is not working now. This requires entire dash to be removed to do the repairs"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Automatic climate control

"Does not cool to the desired temperature on the climate control. Only cools when set to the very minimum of 15C. Outside electronic temperature gauge randomly works typically only after 30-45 min of driving"

Anonymous, BC (2010 Mazda 3 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Blower (fan) motor

"When starting the car the fan makes a noise indicating is striking the nearby structures. This occurs for about 30 seconds and then ceases. I am told that this fan circulates external air."

Cyril H., QC (2010 Mazda 3 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"every time i switch from outside air to a/c, the belt in the dashboard knocks for 20-30 seconds. Dealer says the belt is sticking and may get stuck in a position someday. also seems to be finely shredding the belt and spewing it through the vents. not fixing it because the estimate is roughly $1K, since the entire dash would have to be pulled out."

T G., CA (2010 Mazda 3 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"blower fan only worked in the highest position (4). Positions 1,2,3 not working. Found on you tube that a thermistor circuit was problem. Ordered replacement ($55) and changed out circuit plus cabin filter since I was already accessing the area, Fairly easy access from passenger side."

Anonymous, NJ (2010 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Rough shifting

"bad syncro gear in the manual transmission between 1st and 2nd gear that binds 30% of the time. Since Phoenix is flat I usually shift 1st to 3rd. Not worth repairing on a 2010 since repair would be a transmission replacement costing $3500+. Will drive car until it can't be driven and then replace it."

James M., AZ (2010 Mazda 3 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"on accelerating after cruising about 25mph, there is a rough vibration, as if it is stuck in a higher gear and delaying shifting down. i think this is related to a delay (sluggish) in acceleration which i noticed from the beginning, and which Mazda has never satisfactorily addressed. It improved significantly when my mechanic drained and replaced the trans fluid; but this turned out to be a temporary fix."

Joel E., PA (2010 Mazda 3)
