The Mazda6 provides a sporty alternative to the conventional humdrum midsized sedan. A coupe-like silhouette stands out with eye-catching looks. You probably won't be bored driving the car, either. Quick, responsive steering contributes to agile handling. But the 6 isn't all about flash.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"This car handles excellent, it drives like a go cart with how tight the steering is. It handles bumps very well, but could use a little bit more power at take off. Once the engine revs higher the power finally kicks in."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Mazda 6)

"When the air is on the acceleration is very noticeably slower"

Deanna P., IN (2016 Mazda 6)

"Nothing bad, only too much noise from road and wind"

James T., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Very good handling. Adequate acceleration."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"The Mazda 6 handles very well for a larger car. It's a driver's car that's large enough for passengers' comfort. It performs every task very well. I love the acceleration on highway entrance ramps. This is an all around great car."

Judith M., MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"Drives very good especially steering response. Little noisy and wish it had a little more power."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Acceleration focuses on fuel economy but, if required, I can quickly increase acceleration. Response is very good."

Robert D., AZ (2016 Mazda 6)

"I have owned 5 Mazdas because of the strong handling and sporty driving experience. I read many tests on the new Mazda 6 before purchase. It handles very well, has strong braking, for its horsepower and size the engine performs better than the 4 cylinders in other intermediate sedans. Transmission shifts very smoothly, paddle shifters are fun as is Sport mode. I also like all of the Skyactive features that provide a highway mileage of 40 mpg and combined highway/city mileage of 34-35mpg which is substantially higher than its competition. The ride has been a little more taut than expected, but in keeping with the "zoom zoom" factor."

Joe M., DE (2016 Mazda 6)

"Acceleration is good for a 4 cylinder engine. It is not super fast but more than enough for normal driving including higher speed (130 - 140 KMH) freeway driving. Handling is good, always feel fully in control of the vehicle."

Guy C., MB (2016 Mazda 6)

"Excellent acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Mazda 6)

"I traded in a BMW 3 Series for this car and am overall much happier. Not quite as quick and it was nice to have all the maintenance covered; however, the handling is fairly comparable, it is more comfortable, the sound system is better and the cost of ownership is dramatically less."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"Although the Mazda 6 is no race car and performance was somewhat stunted by the factory stock tires, an early change to Michelin Pilot Sport AS/3 tires made a world of difference. Noise levels and ride harshness improved measurably and handling is now very sporty. The Mazda handled well to start with but with the tire swap, I would put it at BMW-level responsiveness and control."

Carl L., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"This car feels like a nimble sports car, despite being a midsize sedan. Power is there and the car feels grounded regardless of what we ask of it. TRansmission shifts are at logical locations and the car rarely "hunts" for the correct gear to be in."

Ken S., ON (2016 Mazda 6)

"Could use a few more horsepower, thankfully the 2018 has a Turbo."

Bruna L., CO (2016 Mazda 6)

"Good on gas mileage, acceleration a little sluggish"

Anonymous, KY (2016 Mazda 6)

"The vehicle is a pleasure to drive with features that satisfy my driving requirements. It is quickly responsive to steering commands, easy to steer, especially in tight traffic or in requirements like avoiding sudden contact. The brakes provide quick and effective action to stop the car straight on unless an avoidance steering is required."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"I can still get it with a manual transmission, and it handles extremely well - like a smaller car."

Anonymous, NV (2016 Mazda 6)

"Acceleration is good for the horsepower and torque. Transmission is excellent especially in sport mode. The cars best attribute in my opinion is the steering response and road feel. Outstanding for a 4 door sedan."

Mark M., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"good low end torque"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Very peppy. Stops and handles really well"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"Acceleration is adequate. Too slow however in comparison too the way the car looks. This is with the 2.5 non turbo. Handling is good."

B S., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"Great handling car with great acceleration for 2.5 liter motor."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Se previous. Drives fine, and very strong use when already going, but a slight lag in the acceleration (as is typical with 4 cylinders). The one possible issue might be with the xxxxxx and a potential slip, but too soon to tell, and we do use the auto stick as a manual in some regards -- to save on braking, and to provide additional acceleration in certain circumstances."

M S., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"it is very nimble in all aspects of driving"

Anonymous, OK (2016 Mazda 6)

"Awesome handling and very responsive, but it needs a more powerful engine."

Linden F., DC (2016 Mazda 6)

"Quick and responsive. Fun to drive"

Craig A., NH (2016 Mazda 6)

"Great acceleration, handling and braking."

Anonymous, CT (2016 Mazda 6)

"awesome acceleration and handling. love driving it"

Mark P., KS (2016 Mazda 6)

"Accelerates very well, especially considering it's a non-turbo 4-cyl. Handling is terrific, especially on winding roads; steering offers nice feedback with good effort (not too heavy at low speeds, not too light at higher speeds)"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Mazda 6)

"This car is awesome. The acceleration is wonderful and handles great in curves"

Bonnie P., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Excellent acceleration, a "driver's car.""

William K., IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Handling is crisp and responsive. Acceleration is more than adequate for a four-cylinder engine."

CHARLES S., MA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Some sluggish spots in the acceleration"

OWEN V., MN (2016 Mazda 6)

"Ride is stiff and handles more like a sports car!"

GREGORY G., OH (2016 Mazda 6)

"Although the ride is a bit hard, the car has great acceleration and handling. It's still a very comfortable car. Corners like a dream!"

B M., AL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Amazingly peppy for a relatively small engine"

MAUREEN L., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Handling is incredible. I had a much smaller car in the past but the mazda6 is just as nimble. It feels like a much smaller, sportier car."

KEN S., ON (2016 Mazda 6)

"Great handling and acceleration especially given that the car has a four cylinder engine."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Mazda 6)

"The car is very low in the front and water on the road can cause the car to hydroplane."

PATRICIA W., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Of the five cars I tested before I bought, the Mazda was the best driving car. Handling is nimble, power is more than adequate, and the automatic transmission is intuitive (it always seems to be in the right gear.)"

WILLIAM K., IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Handling is very very good. Compared to my friend's BMW 328 it is on par. Acceleration is definitely not as good as the BMW, the engine doesn't make a satisfying sound, and the torque is uneven across the rpm band. But the mileage is amazing!"

ELI J., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"The gas mileage is great! Around town the average is about 24 MPG. Long road trips yield well over 35 MPG."

CAROLYN P., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"SMOOTH SHIFTING, ACCELERATION, COMFORT, ECONOMY."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"The Mazda 6 has very peppy acceleration, especially given that I regularly obtain over 40 mpg on the highway. The handling is excellent for a FWD; almost on par with my BMW 3 series."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"I have taught auto mechanics for 36 years and I was very impressed with the power of a non turboed 4 cylinder, and the handling is great, even though a little choppy."

RANDALL P., UT (2016 Mazda 6)

"It is the first front wheel drive car i have owned that doesn't feel like a front drive.Very neutral feeling and I love it! 1"

H W., CO (2016 Mazda 6)

"The Mazda handles well with good acceleration and breaking. My biggest complaint is the gas mileage. My experience, and driving to maximize mileage, is 10 mpg below Mazda's rated mileage for this model. Would never have bought this model if I had known this would be the reality."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"It truly acts like driving matters"

WILBURN H., IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Performs only as good a Honda Accord. Transmission is the best auto I ever driven including a BMW 328i."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"The car handles great and the acceleration for a non turbocharged 4 cylinder is fantastic!"

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Mazda 6)

"I love the tight handling that comes without harshness."

TIM W., MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"Handling is good; however the car is underpowered"

LAWRENCE N., VA (2016 Mazda 6)

"good"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Stock tires aren't that great. Handles well but I would like more acceleration with out the cost of lower MPG."

DAVID S., MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"Ride is a bit rough, shakes from 60-75. Brought it in three times and they said they "could not reproduce" the issue."

JAMES G., TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"Handling is very good. A little more power would be nice"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Mazda 6)

"I took over a friend's lease who was leaving the country and was thoroughly surprised by how fun this car is to drive. It has great acceleration for a 4-cylinder and has a nice balance of rather plush ride and decent handling. Coming from a Mini Cooper JCW owner, don't take this comment lightly."

Mark W., VA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Acceleration is very good for entering highways. Handling is tight and assured."

Judith M., MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"This car is so much fun to drive! I love the way it handles and love its acceleration. I believe this is the best sedan on the market for the budget minded driver. It drives like a sports car."

Eric I., MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"My Mazda6 handles very very well. It has good acceleration, hardly leans at all into turns, is responsive when situations warrant quick reaction and control. I love it. It handles so much better than my previous vehicle, a 2011 Toyota Camry"

Donald U., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Eliminate noise level Swivel front seats would be helpful getting in and out"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Seats are very supportive and comfortable. I can drive for more than 4 hours and not have a sore back or cramped legs. Ride is taut but I like it. The stiff suspension bushings add road noise that is on the loud side with certain pavement types. But I would not give them up and sacrifice handling and steering response."

Mark M., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"You feel every bump and crack in the road. Went to Mazda with this and they said the suspension is "normal". Seat memory (and many other controls) badly placed. Right (passenger) seat has limited adjustment. I use pillows to suppliment. Also, mirrors do not adjust with the individual seat memory.ol screen opens with a distracting message about distracted driving.... The sterring wheel adjustment is too stiff for my wife to use. The gas cap lock button is often mistaken for the trunk opening button. The CD box/storage space in the center consol is too far back. The remote starter is always a puzzle to operate, often blows the hoen, and is of very limited range. When activated, and you go to drive the car, you have to re-start the car! My old Buick had all the convenience features this has but was much easier to operate. Also the remote start range was three times the distance!"

Robert W., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"Excellent seats, quiet ride, solid feel."

Anonymous, ON (2016 Mazda 6)

"I find the seats and the ride to be fine. The road noise is high. I wish I could do something about that. I love the car."

Larry W., AZ (2016 Mazda 6)

"This is a very comfortable car for long trips (9+ hours). Very good value for the money."

Paul S., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"Too much road noise"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Car is a little loud with road noise, but not more than other cars in it's class. The car *feels* luxurious and so ride noise is expected to be similar to upmarket vehicles. in the GT trim, the seats are wonderful and the handling and ride of the car itself is exemplary."

Ken S., ON (2016 Mazda 6)

"Road noise could be better controlled."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Mazda 6)

"The seats are very comfortable, but the noise level inside was intrusive."

Eli J., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"The ride is nice. The seats could be a little more comfortable. I don't think they're as good as the seats in the Ford Fusions. The engine noise is a bit loud during acceleration but once you get at cruising speed it's not noticeable."

Josh V., PA (2016 Mazda 6)

"The seats are very comfortable and ride is good. The only issue is the noise level which could be quieter."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Mazda 6)

"My wife feels it is the most comfortable seat we have ever owned. I enjoy them as well and appreciate that the power seats have the range for a 6' 4' person."

Don A., MN (2016 Mazda 6)

"Cabin is too noisy from road and wind noise. Very disappointed. Seats are too firm and not “hugging‿ to make the driver feel secure when cornering."

B S., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"Leather seats have very good support and comfortable on long drives. Some road noise depending upon surface of the road traveled."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Mazda 6)

"Very high level of wind noise around front side windows. So bad that I will sell the vehicle even though I very much like most other aspects of the car. Front seats are only fair. Not good back support on long trips. The 2-way manual lumbar adjustment is essentially useless."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"Road noise is louder than in other cars I have owned. Ride is responsive and has good control."

Robert D., AZ (2016 Mazda 6)

"Noisy, especially at high speeds and on most expressways"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"The road noise is very loud which makes listening to the radio difficult."

Patricia W., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Too much road noise on some types of roads & the speed of the car. Otherwise, handling, acceleration & comfort are very good. Like the interior quality and style."

Alex B., TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"My only disappointment with my Mazda 6 is the wind noise at highway speeds. I took it to the dealer several times for this and was told "no problem found", but there is! And Mazda admitted it when they increased the insulation and improved design in the 2017 and 2018 model years. Mazda should at least go back and do something for those of us who complained previously."

Kim Z., MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"Pretty bad noise inside the cabin, especially at highway speeds. Seats are OK, but not great for long distance."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"Harder seats."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Mazda 6)

"Seating comfort, design, ease of use and the Heads Up Display are all excellent. What needs to be improved is the interior noise when driving at interstate speed."

Joseph G., NJ (2016 Mazda 6)

"Rather firm ride, which I like. Only negative is noise level, cabin is not as quiet as I would like, especially for conversation."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"The seats are excellent. They contour well for my body type even after long trips. The ride and noise was a compromise I made when I bought the car. However, I recently bought new Perelli Tires which greatly improved the ride and road noise. Unfortunately, the wind noise is even more noticeable and the fuel economy dropped 2-3 mpg."

Steve C., TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"Despite having a somewhat neutral opinion of the harsh ride and cabin noise level, I would describe the Mazda 6 as a very comfortable and fun vehicle to drive. The seats are among the most comfortable I've ever sat in; long rides leave me refreshed, rather than exhausted."

Carl L., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Although the 2016 Mazda 6 is very comfortable and has a great ride, it still has the cabin noise that has plagued Mazda forever. I don't understand why they cannot do something about the loud cabin."

B M., AL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Wind noise thru Windows is annoying. When I close the door of a car and start to drive, I should hear silence, not whistling wind. Engineers need to fix that design issue."

Nancy S., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Lots of road noise"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Very noisy from road noise."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"The seats are comfortable for long distance driving. The ride is a bit firm, especially on rougher roads, though to be expected with 19" wheels. The NVH is what bothers me most, particularly regarding the amount of noise coming through the windshield and rear edge of the driver's door."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"I am 6 foot four, and can fit in the driver seat very well. The car handles very tight and is simply fun to drive. Getting out of the car is a little bit of a chore because it's so low to the ground, but it doesn't bother me. I like that this car is offered in a manual shift which I purchased, fun to go through the gears, but I wish it had just a little more power."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Mazda 6)

"The power Seats are supportive and comfortable but the front of the seat cushion cannot be pivoted downward and sometimes causes fatigue from pressing into the underside of my lower thigh."

Gary G., MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"I am 6 foot tall and the seats do not go back far enough. I feel squished"

PETER P., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Very comfortable car, ride is crisp but well damped and never harsh. Tire noise with stock tires is loud once they wear. Tires worn at 16000 miles which is very short, common problem."

DAVID W., NC (2016 Mazda 6)

"Good around town, but seats uncomfortable for long drives. Would be better with a tilt adjustment for seats (only available on Grand Touring, but Manual Tranny not available with that package)"

Anonymous, CO (2016 Mazda 6)

"More road noise than I prefer, no doubt due to 19-inch wheels."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Mazda 6)

"Way too much wind noise. Otherwise a perfect car"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Mazda 6)

"The vehicle seems a little noisy when under way above 20 mph"

WESLEY A., WA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Slight road noise and seats could be a bit wider, rest is perfect"

LANCE G., TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"Overall, the car is great. But it could stand to be quieter inside on the highway."

Anonymous, DC (2016 Mazda 6)

"Tire noise in the cabin can be annoying."

ROBERT E., TN (2016 Mazda 6)

"Very comfortable seats, front and back, great climate system. But definitely noisy on rough highway pavement."

ELI J., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"Comfortable seating both front and back. Climate control great. Quiet ride"

ANDREE B., MA (2016 Mazda 6)

"The car is comfortable and rides well. Gas milage terrible. Not anything near what was expected. The control system for blue tooth/radio and such a little hard to manipulate while driving. Road noise reasonable, Interior A/C and heater noise a bit loud."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"Road noise"

Anonymous, LA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Ride is rather rough. Road noise is very noticeable. Seats are comfortable but head rest is uncomfortable."

PATRICIA W., FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Bolstering on the upper section of the front seats is kind of annoying. It pushes your shoulders forward. Otherwise the seats are very comfortable, and the bolstering on the lower section is very snug and secure."

MORGAN B., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Road noise is higher than I would want but that might eventually be fixed when it I need to buy new tires of a different brand from the factory Dunlop tires."

ALEX B., TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"Road noise is too loud."

WAYNE W., OH (2016 Mazda 6)

"it's "feel of the road" drivability. great style and design"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Mazda 6)

"The seats are more comfortable than the seats in the vehicle this car replaced: a 2006 Acura TL. I find that surprising since the Mazda is not a luxury car like the Acura was supposed to be."

CARL L., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"This is my 2nd Mazda, and I'd buy another, but I still think they scrimp a little on road noise protection. Reducing tire noise would be a huge step in the right direction, especially for backseat passengers who pretty much sit directly over the rear tires!"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Mazda 6)

"Mazda 6s are known to have a lot of road noise and, unfortunately, that has not changed over the years. The ride on this year's model is a little hard, suspension doesn't have a lot of give to it, but still a comfortable ride!"

B M., AL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Wind noise is significant around Windows. Annoying."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Mazda 6)

"The seats are very comfortable. There is a little more road noise in the cabin than I would like. The ride is a bit harsh, but I have the 19" rims instead of the 17" rims. The smaller rims, with the corresponding larger sidewall tires, would give a more comfortable ride."

Anonymous, WA (2016 Mazda 6)

"We take this car on long trips and don't feel any discomfort in our backs or legs at the end of the trip. It's suffers from some wind noise, but nothing distracting."

Joel G., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"This is the most comfortable sedan I have owned. The seats are well designed and the ride pampers. The noise level is moderate but not obtrusive."

Judith M., MI (2016 Mazda 6)

"Cabin is quite loud but the handling and acceleration are fantastic."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Mazda 6)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I researched many vehicles in this category, and found the Mazda 6 to be an excellent combination of 'fun to drive', fuel economy and price"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Lot of car for the money. Very zippy to drive. Clearly designed by folks into performance cars"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"This Grand Touring is loaded with nice styling, great content, attractive design, very high gas mileage, awesome handling and driving experience, major safety features, all at a price that was less than other premium content intermediate sedans."

Joe M., DE (2016 Mazda 6)

"I think the Mazda6 was an amazing value, even in the GT trim. Almost a luxury car for much much less. A great deal."

Eli J., NY (2016 Mazda 6)

"A luxurious car for an economy price"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mazda 6)

"For a fully-loaded Mazda 6, you're paying $31-32k. That's nearly the entry price of a luxury line, and you're not quite getting a luxury level experience with the Mazda. It's better value to get a lower trim level with fewer options."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"For a car purchased in 2015, it included many of the latest features as adaptive LED headlights, low speed safety braking, Otto/Atkinson engine, quick downshifting auto trans with quick lock up of the torque convertor, 4-2-1 headers, 19" wheels, aero cover of bottom of the chassis."

James L., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"You get a lot of safety features for the price."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Mazda 6)

"For the price paid for the Mazda 6, there isn't a better value anywhere. It's well equipped, beautiful and perfect in it's reliability."

David E., AZ (2016 Mazda 6)

"It's a great value because I expect the total cost of ownership to be very reasonable for the duration I own the car. I buy cars to keep for at least 10 years, and considering the expected reliability, build quality, gas mileage, and styling, this is a great choice that is often overlooked in the midsize segment. It may have less interior room than the Accord or Passat, but it's perfectly adequate for average sized adults and kids."

Steve C., TX (2016 Mazda 6)

"I think I got a lot of car for the price. Drives extremely well, controls are intuitive, and nimble handling."

William K., IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"Car feels, drives, and looks like a luxury sedan but for a lot less."

Linden F., DC (2016 Mazda 6)

J S., PA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Well worth the price overall. Many amenities and lots of options. So far no concerns other than a slight acceleration lag, and perhaps a slight slip in the tranny, which I'll check with the next service @ 35k."

M S., CA (2016 Mazda 6)

"Great value for the price"

J B., IL (2016 Mazda 6)

"We compared this to the Toyota Camry, Kia Optima and Nissan Altima and felt it was the best value for all the features we wanted. Had more of the updated safety features without going to next price level."

KAREN F., CT (2016 Mazda 6)
