Very good fuel economy, agile handling, a roomy interior and a generous array of features put the Mazda CX-5 in the top tier of small SUVs. Still, a noisy cabin and choppy ride can be nuisances for some. But for enthusiast drivers looking for the versatility of a small SUV in a sporty-handling package, the CX-5 may be just what they're seeking.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"The brake sensor switch failed, car would not shift out of park - all teh lights on the dash came on including ABS TSC DSC and TPMS. Fixed by the dealer, as I managed to get teh car into D and take it to the dealer"

Manjul B., CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Calipers

"factory defects covered under recall"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"was told I had to replace rear caliper because it was hanging up and causing excessive wear on rotor"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"I was surprised the brakes had worn that much but the car also gets a lot of use."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"have had to replace pads and rotors twice since 2013, with about 50000 miles on vehicle."

Jeffrey C., MA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Premature brake wear

"brake pads have had to be replaced twice in 3 years"

Anonymous, AP (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"brakes had to be replaced in 2016"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"We have needed to replace the brakes once every year or 18 months since the car was new. They just don't last very long. It costs about $1000 to replace them each time"

William W., VT (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Was surprised at annual dealership check up that the brakes and rotors needed replacing. Had not encountered any problems/noises when braking, and car had about 30,000 miles. Seemed like low mileage for rotors needing to be replaced, and typically only need new pads with other cars I've owned"

Jeffrey C., MA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Considering low-mileage non-city usage, amount of brake service reqjuired is terrible."

Barrie D., ON (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Had to do expensive repair of rear brakes. Rotors and calipers"

W C., NH (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The rear brakes were shot after only 34,000 km so the dealership replaced them on warranty"

Andrew A., ON (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Rotors

"This is the second set of rotors. They warp quickly and produce a vibration with braking"

Douglas M., PA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"I have had to replace the rear brake rotors approximately every 25,000 miles"

Elizabeth W., IA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Early failure of front rotors due to corrosion issues. I live in New York state."

Anonymous, NY (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"warped rotors causing noise - apparently common!!!"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, IL (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Needed new break pads"

Theresa K., GA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"For over a year the brakes had a rubbing noise coming to a stop. Mazda said the brakes were fine, perhaps a crust of rust on outer rotor. Sanding them didn't help. Eventually got tired of it and had a full brake job done. Serviceman said brakes were essentially worn out at 40,000 km. No brake noise since."

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"There is no way to turn it off. It just stays on until you turn the car completely off. It is a cartoonish looking display and not worth the $500. I paid for it"

Kerry I., TX (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Phone pairing using Bluetooth is awkward and the entertainment system seems to have a mind of its own, often selecting random playlists, not the music I was listening to. It's a little balky and sometimes hard to change users."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Cannot pair phone to system in car. Called Mazda and still could not get phone to car working"

T N., SC (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"several times my bluetooth has stopped pairing with my phone during a call. it will then reconnect and then unpair again"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Phone pairing often requires radio power cycling to recognize on board devices (failures occur 1 out of 5 pairings)"

Anonymous, PA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Radio

"The modules for the satellite radio failed and the antennae associated with the satellite radio failed; per the satellite radio service (Sirius) the problem had to be diagnosed at a dealer (done at a cost of $135) and informed the entire in-dash unit (head?) would have to be replaced at $2800. This replacement cost is 20% of the estimated KBB value of the car - ridiculous. Am considering taking the vehicle to a after-market vendor but haven't done that yet. Mazda does not replace the failed components, only the entire in-dash unit - also ridiculous and lazy service."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Speakers

"The vehicle was sold as having a premium entertainment system but the sound is inadequate. I believe that the Bose speakers are poor quality. The sound system was checked by our Mazda dealer who told me that if I wanted a good sound system, I should have bought a newer vehicle. My 2006 Honda Civic Si has a far better stereo system than Mazda's allegedly premium system. I bought this vehicle used for the young drivers in our family. If the sound system had been decent, I'd have considered buying a new CX-5 for myself, but I won't now. I also checked with a local company that does car audio and the person I spoke to said Mazda's sound systems are just not of a good quality."

Anonymous, VA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Front speakers on my Bose system have stopped working"

Robert S., NE (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Body control module

"Had a short in the electrical module located in the driver's side door that controls all of the electrical systems (got water in it). After charging the car, it wouldn't shut off; it was very bizarre. Had to have it towed to the dealer; ended up costing $500, $100 of which I got comped by Mazda (parts only)"

Anonymous, KY (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Keyless entry

"I changed the battery in my key fab and the key system and starter still doesn’t operate consistently"

Judith B., CO (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Same as last answer"

Judith B., CO (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Loose interior trim or moldings

"Drivers seat is coming apart where it attaches to base. Second seat to do so since I bought the car new"

Kerry I., TX (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Passenger-side door panel fabric suddenly detached from the interior plastic molded panel at the joint above the hand-hold; asked dealer (Lancaster Mazda) to repair this - they could not because they don't have an upholstery person or department; were willing to recommend an outside shop that could apply glue. Other interior trim beginning to fail. Very, very disappointing for the Grand Touring model of this vehicle."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Loose interior trim adjacent to accelerator pedal is a safety hazard."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint peeling off rear bumper"

Michael L., WI (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, PA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Jane S., TX (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Condenser

"Once a year since I have had the vehicle, I have had to have coolant to the A/C. In 2017 , the A/C kept cycling off, and I had to have the whole thing replaced by an independent mechanic for $1,000. I also want to note the A/C blower is not strong enough, so it takes longer to cool it down in hot Texas weather."

Jane S., TX (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Heater system

"Heater core"

Steve K., WA (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"The heater core went bad (minimal heat to cabin, intermittent check engine light). After several attempts to diagnose, we finally got the car to the Mazda dealer with the check engine light on. Why the computer didn't store the code was never explained. The dealer service dept. wanted $1300 for an out of warranty fix. We balked, did some research and found this was a pervasive issue with this model. We contacted Mazda HQ and they worked with us to get this fixed by the dealer for just $65"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Heater core went bad. After on-line research, this seemed like a common issue. Discussed with Mazda dealer (wanted us to pay big $$$), and then escalated with Mazda customer service because a heater core should last longer than that. Mazda picked up most of the bill and we were happy, though it took some work."

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Slipping transmission

"Not consistently, but when accelerating the car will not shift into higher gear. One-time would not engage at all while trying avoidance maneuver to avoid a large truck crossing dividing line, at highway speed. Scary. Dealer could not find problem. I"

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

David C., CA (2013 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Because the coil was bad, the car kept shifting up but didn't have enough power so we had to keep stopping. The manual shift was disabled, so while driving was possible it was not easy. We were able to replace it ourselves for $100 so the cost was fairly reasonable."

A B., NY (2013 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
Engine harness

"Water intrusion into harness caused corrosion which caused the battery to drain, security system to lock out engine preventing jump starting and a host of other electrical issues. There was a TSB issued by Mazda but they wouldn't cover this under warranty"
