The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Mazda CX-5 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display.

    What Owners Say

    Android Auto

""I have a Pixel 6 and occasionally I'd have difficulty getting it to connect with the infotainment system for seemingly no reason. This would happen maybe once a month. Usually restarting the car will resolve the issue, but it is very inconvenient.""

Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)
    Backup or other camera/sensors

""camera, at times, goes blank and does not show rear view. have not followed up with any service or diagnosis.""

Anonymous, IN (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Unsure)
    Display screen freezes up

""Display can freeze, change screens unprompted, refuse to follow inputs, etc""

    Anonymous, (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"The infotainment system has caused problems. Mazda is part of a class action suit that was settled. I had the problems fixed and am waiting for a reimbursement from the litigation."

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Display freezes up, especially with CarPlay attached"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Upon first starting the car, the infotainment system will go through its usual boot sequence as normal, but occasionally will be unresponsive when trying to push any buttons or navigating any menus for the first two or three minutes. Other times, it will behave as though a button was pushed multiple times in a row despite the fact that I hadn't pushed anything yet. I don't know if this is relevant, but where we live gets pretty hot, especially during summer months. There could be dust/dirt getting into the buttons, or the heat could be affecting the electronics.""

Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

""When the display screen goes blank, usually the Mazda logo comes on and a circular indicator spins below it. I hit the button to start the radio and often that clears it up and I can again see the digital clock time and can choose a radio station""

    Anonymous, FL (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"infotainment system freezes and goes into a rebooting loop"

    Anonymous A., DE (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""Sometimes it's not not responsive, this happens daily""

Anonymous, VA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)
    Display screen goes blank

""I rarely use the radio but when the display screen goes blank, I can't see the time display. I think this started within the last 12 months. AND, occasionally the backup monitor doesn't work; but a few minutes later the next time I need it, it does work. Also, when I do listen to a Sirius XM channel often it just switches to another channel than the one I was listening to.""

    Anonymous, FL (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"infotainment system routinely freezes. Goes into a restart loop."

    Anonymous A., DE (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""The infotainment system is unusable: it goes through a constant reboot cycle. The dealer says the whole system must be replaced, to the tune of over $1,500, yet they can't get the parts. This is a known issue that should have been handled under a recall, but since it hasn't killed anyone, it isn't important.""

Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Replaced screen under warranty, and then it happened again. Dealer refused to replace a second time."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS works intermittently closing down & starting every few minutes. When restarting it defaults to one radio station. All info is on the GPS screen. GPS doesn't function as a GPS. Repair quote was $500. Based on this, use cellphone map app. I also had a speed sensor replaced that cost, circa $1500. Engine belt failed."

Anonymous A., BC (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

"Screen kept going blank and needed to be replaced"

    Anonymous A., FL (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The infotainment system has known issues with Mazda. You could be listening to the radio and suddenly it changes stations. You could be trying to make a phone call and it doesnt recognize you. You can have your phone plugged into it and it wont pair with it to play Spotify. Etc.. It just doesnt pair well with your phone. And it randomly changes your radio selections itll go from FM to scan when Im listening to a song. I really dont want to scan and listen to other songs. It just acts like its haunted. I would love for that to be fixed. I bought an aftermarket CarPlay."

    Anonymous, NV (2017 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Sometimes the display changes, unprompted. There is a ghost in the display."

    Anonymous A., NY (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Hardware replacement

"The infotainment display would go blank and then lock up after 5-10 minutes. I had to replace the unit."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Heads-up display

"""Ghost" touching of the display in which various menus are selected spontaneously, causing distraction. There's a class action lawsuit right now but not a recall and Mazda is settling and denying wrongdoing""

Anonymous, VA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Navigation quit working, dealer charged $400 to install a phone based system."

Anonymous A., KS (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring Unsure)

    Anonymous, NY (2017 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"System would not start properly. Beginning of last year. Replaced navigation chip. Fixed problem."

    Anonymous, TX (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""the nav system does not update, antiquated, better to use gps on cell phone - has been this way since original purchase - Mazda behind the times on this feature""

Anonymous, VA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

""In warm weather the navigation system will change display modes on its own, instead of remaining on the selected mode.""

Anonymous, VA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"GPS chip does not work. GPS Computer chip must be removed to enable proper operation of the display screen for any other systems."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"My sons car & I am not sure of specific details."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

    "Same as previous info"

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen has been going blank for 2-3 years. Screen goes blank every 2 or 3 minutes then starts up again. Fix was too expensive. Radio works but can't change the station."

Anonymous A., BC (2017 Mazda CX-5 Unsure Unsure)

"The GPS stopped working 3-4 years ago. I assume it would be out of date even if it could be fixed. I can use my phone - it's still annoying tho. The car wasn't that old when it stopped."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Other in-car electronics problem

""The display screen getting foggy and hard to read, there seems to be a plastic laminate that is de-laminating. In bright light, I can barely make out the display when backing up.""

    Anonymous, CA (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"For the past 2 years or so the info screen flips around, doesn't stop on anything, doesn't sync phone regularly, what not. Haven't bothered to have it seen by dealer, cause it will cost. I can drive in quiet and know how to use a map."

    Anonymous, NE (2017 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"I can be on my iPhone and then get in my car and turn it on in my card. Doesnt recognize my phone and I have to hit my phone and hit Mazda speakers and it still doesnt come in over the speakers."

    Anonymous, NV (2017 Mazda CX-5 Sport 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Radio

"About 2 years ago: the radio station control on the steering wheel doesn't always work; the radio station changes by itself sometimes; the screen suddenly pops into the audio control screen by itself."

Anonymous, SC (2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
    Speakers

""I brought the vehicle in for routine maintenance at Sansone Mazda in NJ and the stereo sounded terrible after picking up the vehicle. I surmised that a service technician likely blasted the stereo and blew out the speakers. The dealership insisted that they never play the stereo even though it was set to a station I never listened to. The manager said it was a coincidence that the speakers were blown after picking up the vehicle, and since it was a 2017 model it was probably due to age. He offered to pay for one of the speakers and the labor charge if I paid for the other speaker. I agreed to this although I still believe they caused the issue. I've never had speakers blow in any other vehicle I've owned. If this is considered normal for a Mazda Bose stereo system than it's unsatisfactory.""

""at about 67000 miles the rear differential deveoped a leak. took vehicle to an independent garage. They diagnosed bad bearing and seal on right side axle. Differential was replaced by them. Did not use dealer, as we were unhappy with their dealing with paint peoblems during first 3,000 miles of ownership. Car had to be repainted twice due to serious chipping on original paint job, and a poorly repaint.""

Contact with the muffler may damage the trailer wiring harness, potentially resulting in the trailer lighting being inoperative, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
    Summary:
Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2017 CX-5 vehicles equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness. This harness may be routed such that there is insufficient clearance between the harness and the exhaust muffler, allowing the wiring harness to contact the muffler.
    What should you do:
Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will reroute the trailer hitch harness away from the muffler, replacing the harness if it is damaged, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 20, 2018. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1617K.
    For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
