With the second generation CX-5, Mazda retained most of the sporty handling that made the first-generation enjoyable, but this SUV is much more mature now with vastly improved ride comfort, noise isolation, and interior quality. It's one of the more desirable models in the compact SUV class. Unlike purely rational choices like the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester, there’s a bit of joie de vivre with the CX-5.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Mazda CX-5 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Apple CarPlay

"Car is currently in storage in FL, did not take to dealer for 2nd attempt to fix due to corvid-19 crisis. Most problems were ok for my iPhone after first dealer fix, but would not pair with my wife's iPhone. We did not feel comfortable with taking car to dealer again at beginning of Corvid pandemic, as they did not have adequate disinfection controls in place yet. Left FL, went to MA."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Mazda CX-5 Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Navigation system would freeze when navigating to a location about 2 hours into the trip. Resolved issue by manually rebooting system 2 or three times. Problem has not recurred in the 2nd 6 months of ownership."

Anonymous, VA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Incident would occur ever few weeks constantly Radio and info screen resetting or freezing while driving and freezes / No Hand Free Operation / No Phone / No Navigation / No Radio Over the air Or Satellite Supposed Fix / Updated Software / never been able to repair it even after cmu replaced x2. Not Resolved returned to dealer"

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"Radio and info screen resetting while driving and freezes / No Hand Free Operation / No Phone / No Navigation / No Radio Over the air Or Satellite Supposed Fix / Updated Software not able to fix"

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"USB device kept playing same song. Dealer fixed it & it's been fine since"

Anonymous, PA (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"I feel they have a poor design. Just after purchase I made an attempt to use the navigation system. Unlike any others that I have seen, I had to first select the city of the place I was seeking. In a metropolitan area where towns boundaries are not easily defined, that can be hard. I believe if the system search started with the street number and name, a well programmed system could then identify the closest city locations"

Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Navigation froze while I was driving on highway. Suppposedly, it only reboots when engine is turned off/back on. I couldn't do this until I pulled off highway, but it didn't fix. I had to navigate home, "blind", at night, w/grandkids in car. This only happened once."

Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Slow to connect. Awkward controls. Sound intermittent."

Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"Sporadically the xm radio will not boot up. It seems that shutting the car off and restarting it will sometimes correct the problem. The dealer has looked at the vehicle twice but was unable to duplicate the problem. I contacted MAZDA USA and got them involved. XM told me the problem was most likely the XM module in the computer. Mazda advised that there is no separate module in this vehicle and that the entire computer would have to be changed. The Service Manager told me that Mazda would not be so quick to do this expensive repair. I had an appointment to bring the vehicle in when for a third time when the Covid-19 virus hit. I paid cash for this vehicle and am upset that I've been given this runaround. Once the virus has died down I intend to follow up on my case with Mazda USA."

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Since day one, satellite radio takes a short while before it begins; occasionally it can take several minutes. At least 3 times it could not connect at all, as if I did not have a subscription; after one of these occurrences it erased my saved stations."

Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"For 8 months Mazda has not been able to fix my Virus XM. The system only plays some of the time."

Anonymous, TN (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"From time to time on my Sirius XM radio receiver blinks out."

Anonymous, DE (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, IL (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"It keeps changing stations in its own"

Anonymous, (2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring 2.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Mazda has a paint chipping problem with their red color! Mazda repainted the front of the car due to excessive paint chips. They struggled to match the paint color so they ordered a new painted hood from the factory that looked great and got its first chip driving 15 miles home from the dealer. After evaluating the problem the manual stated that fuse #48 must have blown, after looking for the fuse it showed that there was no fuse installed. After replacing a new fuse in slot 48 all rear lights returned to normal. We are lucky my wife did not have an accident."

"Lights are very bright at night so that others drivers on the road can see you in your car- good if you want to be seen but not good of you are traveling alone at night. Needs more options for reducing brightness on dashboard"

What Owners Say

Cooling fan

"The first time I drove the car for more than 2 hours it had a burning smell once I stopped. It only had 1500 miles so I thought it was smell of newness of engine burning off. The next time I drove fast for long time the same smell occurred but smoke was coming into vehicle from air vents (2700 miles). I stopped and opened hood to see small flame near passenger side windshield area. I couldn't put flame out and my car caught on fire and totally burned up.
