Almost forgotten by car buyers, the Mazda CX-9 provides a pleasant three-row SUV alternative. Agile handling that masks its size is a nice surprise, as a run down a twisty back road will attest. The ride is firm and steady, proving comfortable on a variety of roads and the quiet cabin contributes to a calm cruise.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“The CX-9 handles very well--sure footed--and accelerates ably. It has strong brakes. However, the suspension is stiff and gives a rather harsh ride. Perhaps the 19 inch wheels add to the stiffness. Unfortunately, the interior noise is high and interferes with listening to music at highway speeds.”

WILLIAM B., VA (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“Very good handling and ride. Acceleration is pretty good, but a little slow in mountains.”

LESLIE S., MN (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“This is a large car and my wife surprisingly really likes the way it handles.”

ALLAN P., CO (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“I have driven (not just test drive) many other SUVs of this type, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Buick Enclave to name a few and none of them have the "car like" feel of this car. Additionally, the visibility and openness of the driving position are great. The A pillar in all the others and slope of the windshield make them feel much more confined.”

CHARLES B., TX (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“Even though the CX9 is a larger SUV, it is fun to drive. The kept the Mazda Zoom Zoom feeling, while I like a lot. As I've gotten older, the ride is just too stiff. Guess it's a trade off.”

BOB C., OH (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“Nice driving experience for a SUV with 3 seats”

Anonymous, CT (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“great driving car. handles great”

WILLIAM D., NJ (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“This is a "driver's car". To the extent that a fairly large SUV can be considered fun to drive, this comes closer than most others, especially in its price range. I did drive several competitors before buying the CX-9. The CX-9 offers a substantially better driving experience than others in terms of handling and general performance feel. As for the nav/entertainment system, it is pretty lame by 2016 standards, and likely behind the times even when new in 2012. Mazda has not offered database upd”

GLENN T., CA (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“The car drives well except that the pick up is mediocre at best. Once ultimate speed is accomplished, it handles and performs well.”

Anonymous, TN (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“this vehicle is very responsive, especially for the size. It feels like driving a car.”

Anonymous, MN (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“The Mazda goes exactly where you point it, and if you step on the gas it downshifts with no hesitation. Great handling, great acceleration. Full disclosure: I love to maximize gas mileage, so generally I accelerate gently, but when the car needs to go fast it does so quite nicely. It holds the road beautifully of course, virtually no steering corrections are necessary.”

ERIC S., NJ (2012 Mazda CX-9)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Seats are very comfortable - like the blind spot mirrors -”

COSETTE S., IN (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“The leather seats have soft surfaces and long drives do not produce much fatigue. The car handles beautifully for such a large and tall car, it's quiet on the road, and the ride is smooth.”

ERIC S., NJ (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“Excellent driver & pasenger seating, very comfortable.”

JACK M., AZ (2012 Mazda CX-9)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“I am very satisfied with this vehicle, Except for the mileage. It is horrible at 17 city and 24 highway.”

Anonymous, TN (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“Drives very good”

COSETTE S., IN (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“The CX-9 is a great value for the price. The handling, quiet ride, acceleration and overall driving experience are solid. The gas mileage is a few MPG below where I would expect an SUV of this size and motor displacement would be but overall very solid vehicle.”

MARC W., MA (2012 Mazda CX-9)

“Seat cushion somewhat uncomfortable. Lots of features for the price. Great sylint. Good handling. 10-CD changer.”

Anonymous, ID (2012 Mazda CX-9)
