The MX-5 Miata is fun to drive, with extraordinary handling and a slick powertrain. The interior is nicely finished and the manual convertible top is simple to operate from behind the wheel. The ride is comfortable for a sports car, although noise levels and cramped quarters make long trips tiresome.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 420,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2019 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Convertible top

"I have the power retractable hard top. It stopped recognizing end-of-travel resulting in a constant warning beep. The problem wound up being due to loose electric motor mounts"

Christopher P., TX (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Top tore where the tabs that pull fold in. Common problem and bad design"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"developed a tear. Needed to be fully replaced"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Rips in the vinyl top over the passenger and drivers side mirrors. I was able to get the first top replaced under warranty as the rips occured just prior to the 3 year warranty expiration. The second top started to rip just after the replacement tops warranty was up. The rips are now over 5 inches long. This was clearly a product defect with the disign as the rips occurred at a major pressure point. I owned a previous Miata 2000 model year and got well over 7 years before I got a very slight tea"

John P., NY (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Cracking clear coat and paint fading on hardtop components"

Anonymous, AR (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"There are drains at the rear of the soft top for rainwater that become clogged and cause water to enter the interior of the car. Sometimes there will be an inch or two of water at my feet"

Anonymous, NY (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Unsure 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"Drains for the convertible top are very small and prone to clog with little or no debris. After clogging the water will go into the trunk"

John P., NY (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

"This year model is known occasionally getting clogged drain holes which cause water to back up and leak into car. Since I have no choice but to park under trees and since I do not care to have to go out and vacuum these difficult to reach areas weekly, I just accept problem. First major leak car was under a year old. They put in a replacent "fix" that had recently come out, and that kept leak at bay for 4 more years. Am a front drain plug leak now, but this is only 2nd time on that one in 8 yrs"

Nelda C., GA (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)

Nelda C., GA (2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata Grand Touring 2.0-L 4 Cyl)
