Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

"I can plug in my iphone, but it doesn’t always connect. When it does connect, it doesn’t always download the screens. It is hard to navigate the Carplay, and most of the time my phone or the system doesn’t respond my commands."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE)
Display screen goes blank

"Twice, upon starting the vehicle, the display was blank. Audio playback continued despite no visual output. Turning the vehicle off and back on remedied the problem"

Bryan H., TX (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 3.0-L V6 turbo)
Hardware replacement

"Screen is going gray from the edges now washing out in sunlight. Dealer will not replace under warranty."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 300d 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Screen turning red, Voice activated mechanism not adequate response, wrong info delivered"

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"Fuse has gone several times...no one knows why...one MERCEDES-BENZ Service manager told my wife it is not designed to plug phones and accessories into (???). Also, MERCEDES-BENZ no longer provides a consumer with a fuse map. We were told they want to make sure it is only serviced by a qualified technician, and that we do not need to know. Why are MERCEDES-BENZ dealers, especially their service people so arrogant and insolent? This is not just one dealer, but several, with different owners."

Craig Y., AB (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350.0 3.0-L V6 turbo)
Tire pressure monitor

"Constant alerts to tire pressure problem even when tires were fine"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 3.0-L V6 turbo)
USB port

"The Apple CarPlay is extremely glitchy. Not only is it very annoying that you have to physically plug in the device for this feature to work, but many times after plugging in the device, it fails to initiate the program. Many times I have to plug the device in multiple times to initiate the program."

Anonymous, MS (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350.0 3.0-L V6 turbo)

Springs or torsion bars

"Hydraulic torsion bar reservoir over filled at factory, leaked and service entered air into system repairing"

J K., PA (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE)
Tire wear is uneven

"Apparently the car sat for months without being driven. The result was the belts on the tire were damaged from lack of use. We drove the care approximately 1500-2000 miles and noticed it vibrated at high speed (>79 mph) on the interstate. We took it back to CarMax. They agreed and told us it was due to bad tires. They replaced the tires for no expense. The use some Chinese brain truck tire that I never heard of but the tires are fine and actually got ratings similar to Michelin."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 3.0-L V6 turbo)

Exhaust

What Owners Say

Other/unsure

"I had a friend walk from left to right in front of my parked car, engine running, brake on, in Drive. Friend was detected. Then, friend walked from right from left in front of car, but was NOT detected! Dealer's service guys were totally helpless with all failures like this. That's the main reason why I'm selling the car this summer. Also, car does not seem to slow down when I approach the rear of another car - I have no confidence that this feature even works, AND the dealer has no real way of testing this, e.g., cardboard cutouts that you drive towards to see if the car stops. In the test that I did, with home made cutouts, the MERCEDES-BENZ did NOT stop and made a real mess."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE)

"When steering assist and cruise control are on and I am on a curving road, I must continually fight the steering wheel. I had to turn this feature off otherwise I would have gone crazy. As usual, MERCEDES-BENZ service is unable to help. Even a gently curving Interstate has this issue!"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Transmission leaks

"After one year of use in June 2020, small drops of oil were left in the garage after long drives. After one month, the car was taken to the local MB dealer Rehal in Pittsburgh. They cleaned the oil and were unable to find the source. They place a tracer to find the source of the leak and asked me to drive the car for a couple of hundred miles to let the leak develop again. The result was a leak from the transmission box. MB took the car for two days and replaced some parts to stop the leak. So far the problem seems fixed. There was no charge for the repair since the car is still under warranty. The MB response and service was satisfactory. They do an excellent job in backing up their warranty. No questions asked. they fixed the problem."

Anonymous, (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 3.0-L V6 turbo)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"we had the car but 2 months when the second gear valve body spring failed. Dealer replaced entire valve body. We also had false early warning of coolant levels. It was only 3 ounces low but that didn't matter the warning came on and we had to take it to the dealer to deal with that as well"

Alice S., CA (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Actually, it is not the paint that is the issue, but the nature wood moulding and trim continues to crack and require replacement."

Craig Y., AB (2016 Mercedes-Benz GLE 350.0 3.0-L V6 turbo)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say
