The revamped M-Class is a refined vehicle with an impressively quiet cabin, meticulous fit and finish, as well as excellent seats. Combined, these elements provide a luxurious atmosphere. Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The revamped M-Class is a refined vehicle with an impressively quiet cabin, meticulous fit and finish, as well as excellent seats. Combined, these elements provide a luxurious atmosphere. Handling is responsive, but let down by vague steering and an unimpressive showing at its cornering limits. Ride is supple, if a bit firm. The standard V6 eagerly serves up smooth acceleration and yields 18 mpg, not bad for a vehicle of its size and weight. Some controls improved with the redesign, but others remain complicated. Towing capacity is generous. Engine choices include a turbocharged V6 and a 518-hp AMG V8.

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

    What Owners Say

    Antilock system (ABS)

"All of the issues are the same - once in a blue moon, something goes wrong, there is a slew of error messages, most of the driver assistance systems (distronic, lane departures, whatnot) are turned off. Some of the time also ABS stops working (or is listed as one of the failing modules) and occasionally the torque of the engine is severely limited. All issues go away by turning the car off and back on (reboot)"

    Anonymous, CA (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.0-L V6 turbo)
    Normal routine brake wear

    "brake pads replaced"

    Anonymous, (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML250 BlueTec 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"At 100000km pads and rotors for more than twice the cost of any similarity repair I have ever paid in the recent past due to proprietary MERCEDES-BENZ requirements"

    Anonymous, ON (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.0-L V6 turbo)

"Electronic brakes had to be replaced at 35000 miles which I was told was normal wear but I am a very conservative breaker and the repair was expensive."

    Carol M., FL (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class)
    Premature brake wear

"Rear brakes sensor broke replaced rotors pads and sensors"

    Anonymous, FL (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.5-L V6)

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Engine light came on went to dealer said the cylinders were being destroyed did not know why, discussed with the main office in Germany could not determine cause and replaced the engine, was in the shop for 4 weeks"

    Ken L., OH (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML400 3.5-L V6)
    Head gasket

"I have been servicing the SUV at the dealer all the time. I went for few recalls and was told that there is an oil leak on the gasket which requires new seal. Not completely sure if the service advisor was trying to meet his quota for the repairs job or was this really a problem. Since my wife drives the SUV, I decided to spend the money to have the seals done."

    Anonymous, NJ (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.5-L V6)

"The service advisor stated that oil is leaking and need new seal on the engine. Not sure if this was a real problem or he was trying to meet his quota (most dealers require that service advisor meet certain amount). Since it is driven by my wife I decided not to take any chance."

"Symptoms indicated inadequate fuel was put in the car. After repairs, avoided non-top tier brands of gasoline."

    Andrew B., MA (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML400 3.0-L V6 turbo)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"2 NOX control sensors failed. repair was over $1200.00 at MERCEDES-BENZ dlr"

    Anonymous, CA (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML250 BlueTec 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Had 3 sets of 2 nox sensors fail. 2 were warranted but last was partly warranted. VERY EXPENSIVE!!!!!!! Many trips to dealer each time to repair as diagnostics difficult . Annoying for a high end vehicle"

    Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

    What Owners Say

    Alignment

"I was very surprised by the number of times I've had to have the car aligned. It was done by the dealership at no cost to me but, in the first two years of ownership the car has needed alignment four times. Roads in my area are generally very good and my prior cars have not needed alignment more than every two years or more"

    James C., KY (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML250 BlueTec 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)
    Shocks or struts

    "needed to replace one shock"

    Lynn B., OH (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.5-L V6)
    Tire wear is uneven

"My issue is with the durability of the OEM tires (Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season.) They are worn out at 20,000 miles. I've had the car aligned and tires rotated as needed by the dealer. When I asked the dealer about this he said "That's right, the OEM tires on a Mercedes Benz only last 20,000 miles and there is no tread life warranty on OEM tires." This is outrageous. Tires for a $70,00+ car should last at least as long as the consumer version of that tire (65,000 tread life.)"

    James C., KY (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML250 BlueTec 2.1-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Excessive wear on inside of all four tires"

    Mike B., CO (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.5-L V6)
    In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The GPS cannot find anything. If I as for nearest Costco it will give me one 3000 miles away. It is useless. It functions OK when given a specific address. It is costly to get map updates. Any $200 Garmin has more functionality. MB should be embarrassed to put this in one of their cars."

    Anonymous, AB (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML400 3.5-L V6)
    Voice control commands

"It requires repeating myself over and over and then only 50% of the time or less does it ever understand what I say"

    Engine Cooling

Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.

    What Owners Say

    Radiator

"The radiator failed and started leaking. Since there was no accident involved, the only reason it would fail is due to a part defect. I had all preventative maintenance performed by MERCEDES-BENZ and paid a premium for that work to avoid a situation like this. MERCEDES-BENZ offered to reduce the cost of the repair from $1,500 to $1,000 while my local mechanic would do the work for $900. And it took them 3 days to come up with this offer. So my investment was not valued or worthwhile. I have owned Lexus, Audi, Acura, and Mercedes. My MERCEDES-BENZ experience has been the worst - costly PM and this repair have driven my maintenance investment to $8,000 in 4 years. Just excessive for a luxury vehicle. I would not recommend MERCEDES-BENZ to anyone thinking about a luxury vehicle."

    Albert C., MD (2015 Mercedes-Benz M-Class ML350 3.5-L V6)
    Thermostat

"My car is scheduled to replace the thermostat for the 3rd time within a year. Mercedes has no answers as to why this and other problems are occurring"

    Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

    What Owners Say

    Automatic climate control

"Outside air temperature sensor was shown as a problem through an OBD check. It was replaced three times before it was diagnosed that there was a break in the seal in a connector point that allowed water in and shorted out the system. This short affected the climate control system so that it produced heat at high outside air temperatures and did air-conditioning at low ambient air temperatures. It was finally fixed by a technician that had the expertise to diagnose and repair the problem. Which was replace a wiring harness across the front bumper between the two headlights that also included the ambient air sensor."
