Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Lee E., IL (2008 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"With only 50000 miles on car, the engine computer gave out without warning in the middle of a major thoroughfare. $3,000 to replace OEM unit. That was 8 months ago. This week, the car died without notice again. Car was towed to dealer thinking the computer went out again. Dealer started the car without problem. Did not find problem with computer. Did not have explanation for why it died. Can no longer trust it for my wife to drive."

Normal routine brake wear

"Front brakes were worn out with less than 40000 miles and will need new rotors next time. more expensive to repair than "normal" car"

Tim G., CA (2008 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"My mini had been stored for several years due to my ill health. When I got her back I had my garage check her over and catch up on any overdue routine maintainence. Unfortunately the brakes had rusted do to infrequent use so my garage recommend a rear brake job. After her tune up she's been running great. Very good to have her back."

"No problems, it was just time to replace our breaks, which our trusted repair technician said was pretty surprising our breaks have been good for so long. Even he said it's a great car and can't believe it's 12 years old."

Starter

"The two part flywheel came out of alignment and the starter gears clashed when trying to start. Had to replace flywheel, and starter. Clutch was incidental since it was apart. I do not understand why they have a 2 piece flywheel. Repair cost $4800. A reminder, several years ago when the car was in the last two weeks of warranty, while parking the car in the garage, the engine had the timing belt skip a setting and a value hit the piston, resulting int eh engine having to be removed and rebuilt. Estimate was $8000 I do not recommend this car (S type) at all. Fun to drive. Very expensive to repair. Not reliable."
