Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

"I can't summarize the issues effectively but there was a major repair about 3 months ago and I know there was problems with oil"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"My 2013 Mini starting using oil at 50,000 miles. When I took it to the dealer, they told me it was normal for a performance engine to use oil. Then about a year later, my wife's 2009 Mini which had been using oil, since 50,000 miles needed a $2,200 repair as the main engine seal was leaking. We traded in the 2009 to get the 2015 Honda. I am very concerned that my 2013 Mini will also need an expensive repair for the main engine seal."

Roy E., MD (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Car doesn't leak oil, but burns lots of it -- up to 1 qt in 750 miles. Local service center says that's a known and expected characteristic of this engine."

Eric P., VT (2013 Mini Cooper S 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Refrigerant leaks

"The AC stopped cooling so I took it in for repair. The mechanic found a leaky hose and replaced it. However, a week later the issue returned, and the mechanic found serious mechanical damage to the condenser. He replaced it and completed the repair successfully."

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"I like to keep my 2013 Mini looking new. Therefore I would take it to the car wash about once per month. I found that trim parts kept falling off my car and finally decided that I could no longer take my Mini to a car wash. I have always kept my cars like new and washed them at the car wash. I never had a trim part come off the car. It has cost me hundreds of $ to replace the trim parts."

Roy E., MD (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"The trim strip on both door thresholds that say "Cooper" began to peel up and get caught in the door when closing. More of a nuisance and aesthetic issue than anything - basically these things scream cheap"

William H., FL (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

Anonymous, ON (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)
Normal routine brake wear

"Needed new rear breaks in less than 27,000 miles. Ridiculously low amount of mileage to need require break replacement. Including a break wear sensor = more repair costs, and a horrible location of the connection for the break wear cable connection."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

"Brake light was coming on, then brought it to a mechanic who said that I needed a brake job."

Jason H., LA (2013 Mini Cooper S 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

What Owners Say

Clutch replacement

"Clutch was slipping Second replacement since new"

Anonymous, SC (2013 Mini Cooper Base 1.6-L 4 Cyl)

Christopher J., NY (2013 Mini Cooper S 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Clutch was replaced twice under warranty. First time was because of a bad release bearing. The second time was because a pivot in the clutch mechanism, which was not replaced with the first repair went bad 5000 miles after the first repair"

Anonymous, OH (2013 Mini Cooper S 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)
